I closed the door on magic long ago... the day it made me an orphan.

Ten years ago, the Coven of Fire sacrificed their lives — my mother among them — to hold off an overwhelming demonic force. Now it's back.

As a poorly-paid bartender, how can any of this be my problem? But Callie, another orphan of that battle, swears I'm the key to reviving the coven. And there's an incre

Alix believed she had no magic, unlike her parents, who died heroically ten years before battling demonic evil. Yet now, she will find herself spell-deep in a fight to save the world from darkness, and just maybe she did have magical powers and just maybe she was one heck of a powerful witch!

Get ready to kick evil’s butt, laugh out loud and cheer for Alix, her big heart and keen sense of right and wrong! RISE by Sierra Cross is a fast-paced, completely entertaining fantasy with characters one ca

As soon as I saw the words magic, sexy guardian, witches, and bad boy warlock in the synopsis, I instantly added Rise to my TBR. I can never resist a book about witches.

The result? Rise is a fast paced and thrilling start to the Coven of Fire series.

My favorite aspect of Rise was the world building. I loved learning more about the witches, guardians, and warlocks. It was especially interesting to see how they all fit together with each branch serving a specific purpose (i.e. the guardians prote

Rise is the first book in the new adult Coven of Fire series by author Sierra Cross. It has been some time since I have read an urban fantasy and even longer since I have read an urban fantasy featuring witches, so I was really pumped to read Rise. I love new adult books that are in the fantasy and paranormal genres because there don't seem to be too many of them. Rise did not disappoint. I enjoyed this read from sta

Rise is a pretty good start of a series. It's engaging, with a likeable kick-ass heroine in the driver's seat. Alix is a cool chick, her sidekicks are fun and capable group - I took a shine to Asher with his snarky comments.

However the story has one big flaw - it's predictable. Every single major plot point could be seen approaching from a mile away. And that killed most of my excitement for it. I know I only marked it as currently re

Rise is a fast-paced, urban fantasy, witchcraft & spells focused story that despite of being ridden with predictable twists, wins your heart with characters who you'll gradually care about.

I loved this for the characters, particularly two, if that isn't evident already. The plot is interesting with Alix, an orphan who couldn't excel her magic skills after her mother sacrificed herself in a Coven of Fire, setting out to close a veil between the realms that has worked as a demon-en

*insert big sigh*

I ....struggled with this book, for a couple of reasons, and it was very touch and go as to whether I would finish it.

First person, single point of view is not one of my favourite ways for a book to be written and only Alix has a here. Matt really should have been given a voice, I think, even if he had been given a first person voice, I would have enjoyed it more.

It could do with a thorough edit. Not en

I loved the the plot !! Alex is bad-ass..What's with all the ninja moves ?? Matt seems to be the good boy here and Asher of course is a bad bad boy !! I loved Callie's character and it was too bad that she had to become evil. Call it instinct, but when I read about Callie's chara

A book featuring magic that I actually enjoyed (other than Harry Potter, of course). I'm not big on witches/warlocks, but Alix Hill and her coven eased many apprehensions I may have had. The book didn't have me jumping out of my seat, but it was entertaining enough to convince me to read to the end.

For many years, Alix has been led to believe that she's a Wont (a non-magical folk) like her guardian, Aunt Jenn, who she has lived with since the unfortunate demise of her parents in a freak bus acci

Alix has spent the last ten years trying to figure out her life without magic or purpose since her parents and the rest of the coven died. One night while tending bar, an almost spirit from her past shows up and demands she help him and her people, ignoring her protests that she is magicless. Almost against her will, Alix is drawn back into the world of magic, covens and demons. To put it mildly, she is way unprepared for the battle that has be

Rise was an excellent start to a brand new paranormal fantasy series that is sure to be a hit among fans of this genre. While there were some flaws with the story, I still found the book very enjoyable and I am interested to see what happens next. The book is a quick, fun read and I am excited to see where this series goes.

The story follows Alix (love the spelling of the name btw), who is a bart

Alix Hill lost her past a few years ago in a tragic accident. Alix’s parents were witches but Alix herself did not inherit any of their magical abilities unfortunately but Alix is trying to go on with her life but it is hard especially when everyone keeps mentioning that she has magical powers and she has to keep reminding them that unfortunately she doesn’t.

The veil between the realms has been broken and demons are pouring through. Alix with the help of her new friends need to form a new coven

I love a good Urban Fantasy, but it's a rare thing to find one that I enjoy as much as I did this one. It's well-written with some great world building, the characters and story are interesting, and the dialogue is witty and at times, quite humorous. I was quickly drawn in to the author's world of witches, warlocks, guardians, demons, and even a few shifters. Alix's story flows at a nice pace that kept my interest throughout. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

I freaking loved this book. Alix was such a fun character. Right off the bat, she was hopping over a bar and taking down a drunk customer harassing one of her coworkers. This is someone I want in my life. Alix had been through some unbearable things, but I thought she was coping remarkably well. Even as one intense thing after another popped up, she just kept rolling with it.

I really loved the little ragtag gang she formed throughout this story. I truly thought, because it is book one, everyone

Decently entertaining

I enjoyed this book. I appreciated how infrequent the copy errors were and the fact that the story felt Finished, while still having plenty of room left for sequels. I really hate cliffhangers, so I was glad to see something properly ended, because a lot of ebook authors don't seem to have a knack for it. I'm glad the sequel will be out soon so I won't have to wait very long to see what happens next.

This is a good start to the series. Sierra Cross has given us the background for the characters and the impending danger. She has built up the characters and gave them dimension. We have betrayals, struggles within, forbidden feelings, honor, loyalty and entertainment.

Alix is the main female character. She is stubborn and strong but has a chip on her shoulder and is in serious denial. when someone says something she doesn’t want to hear she runs from it. The book is told from her view and altho

New adult paranormal romantic suspense. A mouthful, but it nicely sums up RISE, the first book in the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series by author Sierra Cross. I am a big fan of the paranormal genre, especially if it has some contemporary romance and suspense thrown in, so this read was really right up my alley.

Sierra has created a world that exists right here in our own, a side, or underside, of Seattle that few but the magical can see. Although from a magical bloodline herself, Alix has always

What a great story.  Full of action.

In this first book of the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series, we get introduced to our main character Alix.  She is a witch, who believes she is magically deficient.  She lost her parents in an accident when she was a teen.  She tried to practice magic when she was younger, but never could master anything.  Now she is just a bartending wont with a quick temper.

As the story goes on and introduces more characters we meet her guardian Matt.  He is incorporeal at

Alix Hill is a young woman living in an alternative reality modern day Seattle whose mother was a very powerful witch who led a coven of powerful witches. After losing both of her parents and every member of the coven she has to make it through life without them. Ten years later, she's still healing from the trauma of all she lost. To top it off, she's forced to go through life knowing that she doesn't have any magical abilities like her parents. Throughout the book we watch Alix

Rise is set in Seattle, but with an urban fantasy twist; magic and witchcraft are at its core. The synopsis gave me Charmed vibes, which is still one of my all-time favourite TV shows, so I was an eager-beaver to get reading this book.

There were a lot of new ideas and concepts that needed to be introduced and Cross has done an amazing job of doing it in a gradual way that feels natural and isn't just an information overload. The great pace of the novel also enabled me to grasp this new world of

Alix was born from a powerful witch bloodline but did not follow in the footsteps of her mother. Alix’s family along with many others were killed ten years ago in a bus crash leaving her to be raised by her Aunt Jenn. Only now is Alix learning that it wasn’t a bus crash but a demon attack. Matt, a guardian, was thrown into another realm by one of the witches in the fight, saving his life and trapping him there unchanged until a witch could set him free. Alix has been dealt a series of low blows by life in general and some unknown enemies in particular. Yet she’s still a virtuous person and a kick-butt defender of what she believes is good. Luckily, she discovers a few close friends, both old and new, who are willing to help her try to set things right... Nothing is really as it seems though, with

Rise is a well written book by Sierra Cross. It has a perfect pace that never leaves you feeling like you are being rushed through the story, nor does the story ever drag out. The plot is very well developed with some nice developed twists hidden within. There were definitely quite a few I did not see coming, but they were actually very well developed and made sense and not outlandish just to get a reaction out of the reader. It is definitely a unique plot and a neat take on witches that kept me ...more

Alix is a fun, spunky heroine and I enjoyed seeing the world through her eyes. The book is a fast read, which is nice for a busy person like me, but I think it caused some of the finer details to be overlooked. For example, the romance isn't exactly insta love, but it's close enough that I didn't feel that emotional connection. (I definitely felt the chemistry connection though, so it's not like I minded when things got... interesting.)

Although I think this book could've used a proofreader, I de

Rise is book one of the Spelldrift: Coven of Fire series by Sierra Cross. For me it was a heck of a kick off too, I couldn't put it down. From pretty much the first paragraph this book had lots of action. Alix is a very likable character. I loved her attitude. Alix is very sensitive and tender hearted, just don't piss her off. Sierra Cross has done a great job with this series, I am on the look out for more of this series.

The plot, twists and foreshadowing are all well laid out. The book moves along at a great pace and kept my interest. It is a romance. I'm not sure why it isn't labeled as that, as it's missing out on a huge market that would love this book. But the romance is one of the main plot point in the book, so if you aren't into that beware.

There is a need for a editorial once over, but nothing that drags you out of the story. I don't know why but it really annoyed me that the author shortened Alexandra
