Two weeks ago I read Book Love by Debbie Tung and I adored it. I couldn’t wait to read Quiet Girl in a Noisy World, a beautiful work of Art that depicts the special, demanding nature of the ‘’introverts’’ who have to put up (personally speaking) with a world that likes to talk too much, rarely saying anything meaningful…

Motivated by my own hesitation to ask questions, I learned to ‘’read’’ my students’ eyes. I know when they have difficulties and questions. Unlike my own teachers who used to say Two weeks ago I read Book Love by Debbie Tung and I adored it. I couldn’t wait to read Quiet Girl in a Noisy World, a beautiful work of Art that depicts the special, demanding nature of the ‘’introverts’’ who have to put up (personally speaking) with a world that likes to talk too much, rarely saying anything meaningful…

Motivated by my own hesitation to ask questions, I learned to ‘’read’’ my students’ eyes. I know when they have difficulties and questions. Unlike my own teachers who used to say that I was too quiet and it wouldn’t do me much good, even if my grades were perfect. Thank you, teachers, I hate you too. You didn’t do much to help, by the way. You sucked big time!

At the age of 20, I realised that I shouldn’t have forced myself to interact with toxic people just because we had known eachother since primary school. I decided that I wouldn’t go to parties of people I hated just because all my friends would be there. Thus, I found who my real friends are, the ones who accept me as I am. The ones who respect my wish to stay home with a book instead of going to the cinema (which I hate).

Through the support of people very close to me, I found the strength to participate in group projects and to speak my mind. To firmly stand behind it when I was convinced I was right. To reply to any condescending remarks that sounded like ‘’aren’t you a bit too quiet’’ with a ‘’I’m surprised you noticed, you are awfully loud’’ kind of line that sends any f….to immediate silence.

I cut off potential relationships when I visited houses devoid of books. Houses without souls, occupied by people who were empty. I hate small talk with people I don’t know. However, I can talk for hours with those who are special to me. We ‘’introverts’’ aren't stubbornly unresponsive. It’s just that we prefer to talk to the ones who really matter to us, about subjects that concern us. I will never engage in a discussion about politics, TV, films or fashion. I couldn’t care less. But if there is a discussion about books, sports, History, I forget to stop.

I relived these moments through Tung’s marvelous book. Through her cozy, whimsical illustrations she takes us on a beautiful, heartfelt journey to the unique world of those of us who are traditionally called ‘’introverts’’. I prefer to use the expression ‘’silent thinkers’’. And be proud of it…

This was so entirely RELATABLE for introverts everywhere. I basically flipped through the pages just going "yep same same same me...very me...same..." continually so you know the book is a winner there. It's kind of like an autobiography comic of an artist just trying to cope in a world full of very loud extroverts who want to SOCIALISE WHAT IS WITH THAT WHY WOULD THEY DO THAT.

Debbie Tung has very nicely illustrated a vivid and clear potrayal of an introvert. This one`s for all the introverts to understand themselves, and for all the extroverts to get a sense of power, energy and excitement of being an introvert.

There’s a fine line between being an introvert and having social anxiety, and the author of this book managed to truthfully showcase both. This illustrated gift book full of short comics will make you want to say "STOP READING MY MIND!" Debbie Tung fully managed to show me those shadowy parts of myself through her story.

Trust me guys...sometimes I have to remind myself that majority of people on GR are introvrts and I need to shut the hell up😅😂

As an extrovert who is surrounded by introverts 24/7.....
I can say that this book pretty accurate
It did a great job of portraying the "introvert nature"
While many of the things that happened were not relatable to me directly...

This book is the perfect portrayal of the life of an introvert, 100%. I related so freaking hard to every single thing that Debbie said, and I found myself snickering and nodding along to pretty much every other page. If you're an introvert - especially one who doesn't frequently find books you can relate to very well - I highly recommend picking up a copy of this when it releases!

I'm an introvert, but unlike the author or this graphic novel, I consider mine as mild. I prefer just to stay at home, read a book, or watch a movie/series online than going to the beach or doing sports. That's where my reticence ends because on the contrary, I'm a talkative person, opinionated, a little assertive, and more of a motivator. However, Debbie Tung's case is more severe because she got some problem communicating and dealing with others.

I can so well relate with Debbie. Being an introvert is not a weakness or a negative personality/behaviour. It's just how we are. This comic collection is not meant to be funny or to entertain everyone. It's just the reality of how we as introverts act and behave and feel. It's not our fault if people do not understand us. We are comfortable as how we are. And yes, there's nothing wrong with us.

Have you ever read a book that was so ridiculously relatable, you weren't sure whether to laugh or cry? Yeah, that was me and Quiet Girl in a Noisy World. Yet, whilst reading it, I was wearing an smile ear to ear smile from the first page until the last.

It was funny, adorable, heart breaking, heart warming, painful, honest, inspirational and oh so relatable. The artwork and its simple back and white colour scheme was utterly gorgeous and inviting.

I have been an introvert all my life, and I used to think this was a problem. Introverts do not always have the best reputation. We can be seen as rude, antisocial, and insecure. As a child, I felt like I wasn’t good enough as a whole person because of my reserved nature. Thankfully, I’ve come to learn that being an introvert is not a sign of weakness -- this is just a part of who I am, and I’m going to live my life on my own terms.

I enjoyed this even more than Book Love. Debbie Tung's artwork is lovely, I really enjoyed reading this story in pictures. I loved the thought bubbles and imagined scenarios, it goes without saying that there will be lots in here that introverts and readers will identify with and certainly raise a smile or two! I like the way the couple in this book compliment each others personalities and I enjoyed the snapshots looking into their life together.

Debbie Tung has done a brilliant job of turning my biography into a graphic novel. Sure, she got my name wrong and I'm not married to a wonderful extrovert called Jason, but she got everything else spot on so who am I to quibble? Okay, so maybe Quiet Girl in a Noisy World wasn't written with me specifically in mind, but it could have been! Debbie has totally nailed what being an introvert l Introverts of the world unite! In your home... on your couch or in bed... alone... Just the way we like it!

Debbie Tung has done a brilliant job of turning my biography into a graphic novel. Sure, she got my name wrong and I'm not married to a wonderful extrovert called Jason, but she got everything else spot on so who am I to quibble? Okay, so maybe Quiet Girl in a Noisy World wasn't written with me specifically in mind, but it could have been! Debbie has totally nailed what being an introvert looks and feels like.

In this graphic novel, we follow Debbie through her final year of college, meeting and marrying an extrovert, navigating the workplace and surviving the nightmare of social interactions, often by using her husband as a social shield. From experiencing doubt about who she is and feeling different from the extroverts surrounding her who thrive on small talk, we see Debbie's transformation upon learning there's a word that describes her - introvert. Upon learning more about her tribe, Debbie learns to accept herself as she is and begins to embrace her dreams and passions rather than trying to fit into the extrovert shaped box she's been struggling to fill.

In a world that seems to be filled with extroverts (probably because all of the introverts are at home or in hiding) introverts outside of their natural habitat can be made to feel like they're from another planet when forced to interact with more than one person at a time and from another galaxy if even one of those people are a stranger. A stranger in the Dictionary of Introverts could be defined as 'a person who isn't a family member, partner or closest friend'.

Debbie is a very talented illustrator and captures the worldview of introverts so well that there will be people safely tucked away in their homes quietly murmuring, "Me, too" as they wander with hope through this graphic novel. I loved that you can just as easily enjoy this book in snippets as you can reading from cover to cover. I adored the use of a battery percentage above Debbie's head showing how long she has to go before she needs a recharge. Should extroverts want to discover why we introverts act so weird in social situations (and let's face it, we do!) this is the perfect way to find out because we'll most likely be too shy to tell you face to face.

Through the wonder of internet anonymity, those who have read a couple of my book reviews most likely already know me better than some people who have been in my life for decades. I know the pain of feeling alone in a roomful of people who are happily making small talk and the comfort of not feeling lonely at all when I get to recharge by myself. My fellow introverts and I must have forgotten to register for Small Talk 101.

If you don't know me you could be forgiven for wondering if I was born without a voice box. If you've managed to find your way through the labyrinth and cracked the code at the end to become a trusted friend then you may wonder if I'll ever shut up! I guess that's just one of the many paradoxes of introversion.

I’m not as introverted as the author. I’m not an extreme introvert. On the continuum I’m definitely well over on the introverted versus extroverted side; I have aspects of both. But I knew this book would fit me and that I would love it and I already knew I loved her art style and writing/captions.

I think I liked this book slightly less than Book Love but I still loved it. Many of favorite cartoons were the ones about books and reading.

I did love this part though. This list: Introvert, highly sensitive person, empath, shy, compulsive worrier and over thinker and what she says about them fitting her:

“In hindsight, I should have been terribly disappointed at the discovery of so many flaws. But instead, I felt immense relief.” (Page 152 of my e-book)

Yes! That was me when I first learned about introverted vs. extroverted personalities. I’d gotten so much criticism when I was young for not joining enough groups and not liking large noisy parties, preferring one on one and small intimate group social experiences. The “lonely in a crowd” definitely fits me, even more so in my early years than now.

She’s so honest and so relatable. I love the humor and the pathos. I recognized so many of her experiences in my own, but I think that most people who appreciate her art style (as I do!) will enjoy her work, even if they are gung ho extraverts.

I’m happy for this artist/author that she was able to feel comfortable with herself as she has and to pursue the creative career she’d wanted. I enjoy her art & books, and I envy her artistic talent.

I am on record as not liking much two of the most popular memoir-ish, self help-ish, introvert-ish books that were #1 and #2 on the 2018 Goodreads Graphic Novels and Comics award list, Sarah Anderson's Herding Cats and Little Moments of Love by Catana Chetwynd. But I was a largely introverted kid until (I met a girl when) I was eighteen. My mom, worried about me and all my closed bedroom door reading, and told me repeate I haven't read any of the introvert books such as Susan Cain's work, Quiet. Tung got known as many others have through her webcomics on this and related topics. Some pages are one page self help memoir/vignettes, but the book is largely a story of her self acceptance as an introvert who prefers to read, drink tea and write and draw rather than socialize. And she has an extrovert boyfriend/husband who understands her and whom she can reply on in social situations. This is a book for introverts to help them feel normal, because Tung had to go through a process to accept herself. She thought there was something wrong with her, then discovered words to describe herself in the literature such as empath, shy, introvert.

Tung took the Myers-Briggs personality test and discovered she was INF-J, and was told she was one of less than one percent of the world who were dominated by introversion, intuition, and feeling. Huh??! I should think more than half of the millions of Goodreads readers would technically be INF-J!

But it is also a guide for extroverts who want to love introverts, as Tung's husband clearly does. I liked that aspect of the story.

I guess I would rate this roughly 3.5, as I am just meeting Tung and her work for the first time and am not yet annoyed by her. :) (Be nice, Dave!) Okay, I did like Tung's voice and story here, and the support role her husband plays, even if her "be yourself" takeaway is not that startling. For fans of Anderson and Chetwynd, this is also just as cute, and less web-comicky (random) and more narrative. Which I prefer. ...more

Debbie Tung's graphic novel autobiographical sojourn into her highly introverted world and personality, her Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story has indeed been a bit like looking intensely into a reflecting mirror for an extended period of time, as so much (not all of it of course, but definitely and in fact a sizeable majority) of her depicted and described scenarios could have been taken almost entirely and "verbatim" from my own life story (as while I am not in any way quite as Debbie Tung's graphic novel autobiographical sojourn into her highly introverted world and personality, her Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story has indeed been a bit like looking intensely into a reflecting mirror for an extended period of time, as so much (not all of it of course, but definitely and in fact a sizeable majority) of her depicted and described scenarios could have been taken almost entirely and "verbatim" from my own life story (as while I am not in any way quite as intensely introverted as Debbie Tung obviously is, I am also not someone who is all that extroverted and therefore also generally prefer either working, thinking, being alone or one-one-one interaction and definitely just like Debbie despise huge groups of people, parties and other social gatherings, too much background noise and so on and so on). And especially when in Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story, Debbie points out her family's and also to a certain extent later her significant other's family's reactions and general attitudes to her preferences of reading a book alone in her room to going out and visiting, being a social butterfly, oh my, how often have I not heard similar critical words regarding my lack of friends, my preference of reading alone in my room to going to a movie or to some other kind of social event (even if said social events would likely have been rowdy and filled with loud music and overindulgence of alcohol and/or drugs).

Of course though, Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story is still first and foremost Debbie Tung's and not my personal story (and I am therefore also not in any manner saying that she is I and I am she). However, there certainly are enough similarities to be found in Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story for me to say that yes, this perusal (this reading and viewing experience) has been a very much eye-opening, heartening and both sweetly and sometimes painfully honest excursion into much of my own life and personality as well, although I do hope that Debbie Tung actually is appreciative of the fact that she is incredibly lucky to have found a partner, to have found a husband who is both extroverted and also understanding of her introversions, who seemingly always "gets" her but also often takes the social pressures off by playing extroverted defence so to speak (as that is certainly not always the case and in fact, many introverts do end up going out with and/or marrying fellow introverts, such as like in my case, where my partner is actually even more introverted and shy, even more not into people than I am, than I ever could be). Highly recommended both for its storyline and for its black and white illustrations is Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story, and while simply as artwork in and of itself, Debbie Tung's pictures are a bit too bland and colourless for my personal aesthetic tastes, the combination of text and images in Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story does work extremely well (and indeed, here is yet another contemporary graphic novel I have very much if not actually totally enjoyed, although it sure does seem that most of the graphic novels which tend to appeal to me are definitely more often than not either autobiographical or at least potentially nostalgic in theme and content). ...more

Of course I decided to dive into this graphic novel with my favourite beverage : a huge mug of warm tea.

This graphic novel just had a really soothing effect on me, it allowed me to take some me time and simply enjoy reading about my beautiful introverts.

This just makes introverts look like they are high maintenance people who aren't exactly how they appear. The awkward situation that the MC faces didn't quite translate very well and often end up making her seem unintentionally rude. I don't know if it was ment to be funny to see how different she was but I didn't get the humor. Each panel shows a very stereotypical behaviour any introvert might show. Beautifully illustrated graphic novel that I could most certainly identify with. I prefer quiet to social gatherings. I like being around my close knit family and find social interactions exhausting. Give me books and space and I am happy. It's nice to know there are "others" like me. Approximately, I follow Debbie's drawns since 1 year. Her images are cute, pretty and sadly accurate for a certain moment of my life, so when I saw this book I know that I must read it to see if there's something new and it was.

After reading Book Love, I couldn't wait to discover the previous work of Debbie Tung.

This one is about introversion and it touched me a lot, as plenty of other readers. I really like how Tung doesn't just tell general stories, but specific moments she lived at work or with her husband. 4.5 This was just so relatable and I fully immersed myself into this. I know these sketches will be my companion, and I will return to them often. It perfectly showed some of my inner questionings, nightmares and dreams and gave them a new life. And it is just so comforting to know there's more INFJs outside ready to share their story. I know it takes some courage to put your thoughts onto paper, but Debbie Tung did just that. And I'd like to thank her for that.

Why is she/he so weird? Can't she/he join us?
Why is she/he sitting like an isolated Panda? I don't like that guy so much.

Our kid isn't responding to the family parties that much, I would rather say not attending! But why is the kid becoming so antisocial & irresponsible!?

They've seen & see. They've commented & commenting. But....
There is most probably no one to observe the whole thing. They don't see the invisible shackles that hold their feet; they don't know that there is an invisible tape

This is such a perfect analysis of my life.

What I Liked

The relatable-ness. Oh my god this graphic novel was way too relatable. I've known that I am an introvert for a very long time now, but it's so great to see a story like this that is just so completely relatable.
