Spynosaur #2

Spynosaurus vs Goldenclaw

Rate this book
From a land before time comes a hero for today … Spynosaur - he’s going to make crime extinct!

A hilarious new series from award-winning author Guy Bass, perfect for fans of My Brother is a Superhero, The Astounding Broccoli Boy, Darkmouth and Hamish and the Worldstoppers.

When Spynosaur locks up the last of the world’s worst criminal masterminds, all that’s left are a string of disappointingly undemanding novelty villains. With no one worthy of his super-spy skills, Amber’s worried that Spynosaur might give up spying altogether. Even Goldentoe, their last hope of a dastardly villain, admits to only pretending to be evil to win the heart of Shady Lady. Frantic that her dad has lost the will to spy, Amber convinces Goldentoe to make himself a more desirably dangerous suitor. With the help of the Science Ray and a sample of Spynosaur’s DNA, Goldentoe transforms himself into Goldenclaw, a formidable half-man, half dinosaur far more powerful than Spynosaur, and intent on a spot of world-ending asteroid flinging...

We came across this book not knowing it was the second in a series but had great joy reading it together.
Spynosaur is a secret spy agent turned dinosaur (we still don’t really know why (this is revealed in the first book) who fights terrible evil alongside his daughter Amber and other agents from Department 6.
The book is a mix of reading chapters, spy files and a couple of comic-like pages and it’s very fun to read.
The characters are interesting and curious and each has a very distinct personality making it easier to make voices for each one, though sometimes it can be hard to read some sentences aloud because of how language is used, especially the alliterations from Shady Lady.
The plot is great: Spynosaur is a little down in the dumps and trying to find a worth opponent for his impressive spy skills. At the same time an infatuated Goldentoe wants to become evil to win the heart of a baddie, and eventually he turns into a pretty bad baddie: Goldenclaw. But all of this is the result of well intentioned bad actions…
The downside of this book is due to the printing. The black and white pictures inside have very little contrast making it hard to read the imagery in the comic like pages. Either colour or better contrast would have been better choices but don’t prevent the reading or enjoyment.

A fun short read for children ages 7-12 who love espionage, dinosaurs and some action-packed ninja kick punch stories.
