“I’m not here to hurt you, I’m here to help you. I’m here to do what I’ve been doing my whole life… what you’ve been doing your whole life. We save each other.”

This was an NA contemporary romance story, about a couple who had been best friends when they were younger.

Charlie was quite a prickly character when it came to Trevor, and she really seemed like she didn’t want to be friends with him again, even

Who She Was was a charming and loveable new adult romance novel. This book made me feel so many different emotions, and I loved that. I thought the book was pretty well paced, but there were some parts that I felt were a little on the slow side. I was so excited that the author included a mystery in this book, because that added a very intriguing element to the book. Since I am a hopeless romantic, I still would have like there to have been even more romance in this book.

4 stars -- I received a free advanced copy from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review/opinion.

There is SO much to love about this story, but the highlight for me is most certainly the characters. They were so full of depth, quirky, EXTREMELY lovable, but also with epic flaws that made them feel real (and made you occasionally not like the things they were doing, even as you still loved them). And since characters are a highlight for me,

Update 5/3/17:

See more reviews on my blog Novels and Necklaces

This is the first novel that I have read by Stormy Smith, and I was extremely impressed! I didn't know what to expect going into the novel, and was really surprised by how much I truly enjoyed Trevor and Charlie's story! I finished this book in one sitting because I had to know how everything would work out in the end. Right from the very beginning I connected to the characters, and I never wanted to stop reading. It's

It's always a risk to take a chance on a self-published book because a lot of the books self-pubbed tend to need a lot more editing. And as a grammar nerd I die a little inside whenever people misspell a word. But with this book I am so glad I decided to take a chance on it.
The writing in this book is gorgeous and lyrical and it actually has some lyrics in it too. As you can read in the Author's Note at the end, Stormy has had some r

First, special thanks to the author for sending me an advanced copy of this book for review.

When I was offered this book for review, somehow I did not realize that this is a NA contemporary romance. NA is a genre that I have been wanting to dive more into recently, so this was a pleasant surprise to find out when I received the book.
The most experience that I have with NA contemporary is Colleen Hoover novels. I LOVE Colleen Hoover. This book had similar vibes. I was drawn right in.

Who She Was was a wonderful book because it was really about self discovery for the character Charlotte as well as her best friend Trevor. In the beginning these friends who have drifted apart after Trevor's family moved away, are reunited. Trevor decides that he wants to know why the girl he once knew as Charlie has changed so much after the four years they spent apart. Trevor can tell that Charlie isn't happy and he wants that to change. Both characters are dealing with family issues and secre ...more

I didn't have much hope for this story because of the many cliches. I'll be honest. However, as the book carried on I found myself investing more and more into the characters, as well as the story itself. The author skillfully uses figurative language to bring the characters' emotions to the reader and to set the scene so the reader, at times, becomes completely engrossed in the story. Also, the fact that the author managed to create a novel that still evoked emotion, even though there were (as ...more

Setting: This story is a beautiful tribute to the city of Des Moines and its recent changes. It was refreshing to not only recognize places named in the book but to have visited them as well. I would almost consider the city its own character based on the breadth and depth it is explored throughout the novel.

Characters: I did not like Charlotte initially when she was guarded and a people-pleaser. It’s part of her identity journey to be that person for a while but, I much prefer the Charlie that

Who She Was is a great book that tackles some hard subjects and does so in a way that gives them the attention they deserve. It's about two college kids who used to know each other and be the best of friends before life tore them apart. Their stories were both so difficult, the things their parents forced upon them and the reasons why something no child should ever have to deal with.

When Trevor found Charlie at the beginning of the school year, he made it his goal to get back into her life. Cha

First off, let’s take a moment to admire the cover because wow, it’s so gorgeous! I love the fading colors! It’s so pretty to take pictures with, too!

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but I did have some minor problems with it that I will address. This book was self-published, but it was well edited. Truthfully, I don’t read many of those but when the author approached me, the synopsis intrigued me. Normally, I’m not

I have read a few of Stormy Smith's other books in the paranormal genre and loved them. Little did I know how much more I would love this realistic fiction novel! I was sure I would like it, but I was unprepared for how much I LOVED it. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, there's just so much going on and so much to feel.

Charlie and Trev are such lovable characters. You end up feeling for each in their own tragedies and really rooting for them as friends to figure things out. When you find out the

This was not what I was expecting at all, but in a great way!

I don’t want to give away any spoilers but this is more than just your average teen romance. I’ve read all of Stormy Smith’s previous books and loved them, so I already knew that she writes more than the usual fluffy YA romance but I think I was expecting a quite light-hearted ‘boy meets girl’ - separated by adversity, remeet, short angsty adjustment period, all ending in a HEA.

Whilst it does kind of follow that pattern, this was so mu

I received a copy of this book from this amazing author. Thank you so much Stormy!

I really enjoyed it. I can't explain how I felt when I finished reading. My emotions were totally mixed. I wanted more of this story, or I wanted a different end, or I wanted the end exactly like it is. But still, I cried my eyes out. 😀

Stormy Smith kindly sent me an arc of "Who She Was" for review, and I am so grateful for it as I really enjoyed the book!
One of my favorite aspects of WSW was the huge role music had within the story and development of the characters. It added such a unique and atmospheric element that I really appreciated, and I loved seeing the characters' distinctive connections to the music they listened to and played.

I loved all the local Des Moines flare that this story captured! The character development was so detailed, and the theme of depression and suicide was handled with sensitivity without sugar coating the depth of emotions involved. This was an easy and enjoyable read!

Me and contemporary romance don't always get along, so when I find one that I can actually read from start to finish, I blog about it. Who She Was is a powerful story about two people who are struggling to figure out who they are and hat they want after tragedy strikes and they go their separate ways.

Charlie has to deal with a lot. She holds a dark secret, one that haunts her about her sisters death and she's reluctant to share it. Trevor has messed up parents who put him in a tight spot. Its e

Both Charlie and Trevor's stories have stuck with me long after I first finished this book. It was beautiful seeing their relationship grow and to watch them learn so much about themselves through each other. Plus, the backdrop of Des Moines, Iowa (my hometown!) and all of the wonderful mentions of where they were traipsing around made my heart so happy. I've never read a book set in Des Moines that spoke so much to me. It's seriously a love letter to being young in Des Moines.

This new release isn't available until May 4, but I was lucky enough to get a pre-release copy. It's a great contemporary novel for YA audience, yet Gen X will enjoy too. Great character development and the pace of the plot is right on. Anyone from Des Moines will know the setting and Stormy makes Des Moines as much a character as Trevor and Charlie.

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from the author.

I am going to be straight to the point. I didn't see and feel the connection between the two main characters. I find that they have too many issues weighing them down and only realise their affections right towards the very end.

Although, the idea of a friend to lover is enticing if it is weaved through with a flow but for this book, not so much. I guess I had such high expectations about the story and it just didn't quite reach it

I received this book for Christmas autographed and it was one of the best spontaneous gifts I've ever received! This was well written, engaging, and the characters had just the right amount of depth. The author could have chosen to elaborate on mundane details that no one really cares about, but she focused more on the characters and the plot making this worth the read. Bonus-the author lives in Iowa and made the setting Iowa (namely Des Moines).

We are reading this for our book club, and the author is going to come to our meeting, so that adds a layer of excitement to an already good book. I loved the people in this book and how real they felt. I love that in an instant society, Trevor was willing to wait for Charlie. I loved that he understood the importance of a first kiss. I loved that you could have a love story, and it could be rated PG. Some of the themes were not for kids, but they were real. The struggles were real. Not knowing ...more
