George Ivanovich Gurdjieff was a formidable personality in occult circles who attempted to link eastern and western contemplative practices to engineer his own esoteric system . His exotic background and unorthodox methods attracted many disciples and plenty of controversy, and he established a number of schools for the teaching and practice of his philosophy. By the time he died in October 1949, his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man had long split into several acrimonious groups and he had been accused of Satanism and fraud, among other things.

Thus it is interesting to regard the persistence of his teachings in the various forms adopted by bold individuals over the years. Robert Earl Burton is a 4th generation teacher of the Fourth Way who has devoted his attention to the central practice of self-remembering. He gives here a kind of workbook for the initiate that can be followed by those with the inclination but mainly for his students at the school in Appollo, California.
