Raising Healthy Parents

Rate this book
This ain’t your parents’ parenting book .

In parenting, there is a case to be made for putting your oxygen mask on first. This refreshingly humorous yet effective guide on the oh-so-serious business of parenting reminds us that being a successful parent means first being a successful human. Part philosophy, part implementation―including recipes, tips, and exercises―Sid Garza-Hillman’s damn-is-it-tough-to-stay-happy-and-healthy-these-days resource is a must-have for anyone who is or will be a parent.

In the complicated, fast-paced world of raising children, it is easy to forget that a family is really the sum of its parts. In Raising Healthy Small Steps, Less Stress, and a Thriving Family , Sid Garza-Hillman expounds on his premise that health and happiness, like the body and mind, are inextricably linked. And while this book is essentially about perfecting the imperfect art of parenting, Garza-Hillman puts the focus squarely on the individual. Equal parts philosophy and reality, this edgy and humorous guide to parenting offers simple, life-altering steps that will bring wellness and harmony to the parent, and, as a result, the whole family .

Raising Healthy Parents contains easy-to-do tasks, lessons, resources and simple recipes, but it is much more than a simple to-do list. As parents explore themselves, their forgotten dreams, their abandoned passions, Garza-Hillman will show them that easing into healthy choices will benefit them, their spouses, and most important, their children. And because there is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting, the specific needs and motivations of each family dictate the size and frequency of Garza-Hillman’s Small Steps. This book provides the basic principles on how to live your best life and make happiness, low stress, low conflict, and fun the starting point for a life-long endeavor.

This is a self-help book disguised as a parenting book. It’s entertaining enough and has some good info. It promotes good parenting through healthy living and setting a wellness-based example for your kids. I did not like the writing style one bit. (“Nutty-nut-nut”? What is that? Cheesy.) And he went on about veganism for kind of a weirdly long time. (Yes, I get it, it’s healthy to eat vegan.) Some of the recipes in the back look pretty good, so I’ll be trying those.

(Quarantine book #56; “read a book that begins with R”)

Sid is one of my favorite podcasters so I knew I’d love his second book. He writes just like he talks which is quirky, funny, and just makes sense. Lots of good straight forward info.

When it comes to veganism, parenting, and prioritizing self-care, Sid and I are on the same wavelength. A lot of this feels like common sense but I’m glad it exists! And I
got mine signed by Sid at Vegfest so that makes me COOL right??

Fun, easy read. I enjoyed the insights and explanations of the first two thirds of the book and appreciated the reminders to take a breath and focus on my own health and wellness first in order to be the best person I can be for my family. It's an easy read, that can be digested in super small bites or in a longer sitting. The last section of the book seemed way more specifically focused on food and diet, something I was likely able to accept more easily because of previous familiarity with the author and his beliefs. That apparent switch in focus may be more jarring to someone reading this book without the benefit of knowing Sid's voice or overall message. Cool book.

Full disclosure I know Sid and I think he’s a great guy. Having said that I wish I’d had this book 5 years ago when my family and I started our health change journey. You know how it goes, it’s a bit like looking for a bowling ball in a dark closet with no flashlight. You feel nervous and eventually you get bonked on the head. Sid guides change in a sensible achievable way. No cliff jumping necessary. I can’t recommend this book enough. In fact I bought more than one to give to other families I know.

I met Sid Garza in person when he was teaching a nutrition class in California. I have also listened to his podcasts. I feel like he is the real deal. He practices what he preaches. I am beyond the parenting stage where my children are at home, but his advice seems very knowledgeable. The way he talked about his kids, I would say his advice works. They seem to be great kids. Somehow, he has convinced them to eat well.

Fun read where you can hear Sid talking the entire time. He walks through how to treat yourself better in order to live a happier and healthier life and how to transfer that behavior to your family as well.

Entertaining read with some clear directions to change your life to become not just better parents, but a better you. Sid has an endearing sense of humor. The book is an easy read and can be read in small stolen moments, or a long sit.

Great encapsulation of Sid's approach to healthy living. I've been watching his Youtube videos for years now. This is a lot of it in a nutty nutshell, so to speak. Jiminy Christmas, it makes sense.

The info was good, tho I pretty much already knew all of it. Really disliked the writing style. Extra cheesy and not funny.
