Sacred Rest: Finding the Sabbath in the Everyday

Rate this book
If only there were more hours in a day . . . Your to-do list is beyond taming, and your commitments are unavoidable. How could you allow yourself to rest in busy times like these? What would rest even look like in your life? Author Cheryl Wunderlich knows these questions well. After years caught up in the whirlwind of family life, motherhood, work, and ministry, she couldn’t imagine allowing rest for herself—until cancer forced her to stop. In her crushing battle with exhaustion, she began to hear God’s still, small voice inviting her to hope, be restored, and to find deep soul-quenching rest in Him. God’s rest was her way back to life. These 100 devotions offer prayers, Scripture verses, personal insights, and biblical perspectives on God’s loving gift and command to Rest. Be still. You can experience both rewarding work and rejuvenating rest. Accept God’s invitation, and taste the welcome relief of a life balanced in His rest.

A very nice, quick daily devotional about rest and how sacred it is to connect quietly with God.

God’s gift to us is rest, and His command is to be still and know Him. But in the busyness of life, we sometimes forget to stop. In “Sacred Rest”, Cheryl Wunderlich offers 100 devotions filled with scripture, prayer, personal insights and reflections on God’s command to us to rest.

I don’t usually comment on book covers, but the cover of “Sacred Rest” is beautiful. It will draw you into the book which is equally aesthetic and a reminder of rest. The book is divided into ten parts each including ten devotionals. Each part focuses on an important function of rest. You will turn to this book again and again when you are seeking God’s rest. Wunderlich beautifully shares the need for rest and what happens when we fail to enter God’s rest. Don’t let the world dictate how much rest you get. Turn to God who knows how to provide you with the rest He knows you need.

This book was o.k. Clearly written by an affluent person - mentioned flying home from vacation stress and other “first world” problems.

My biggest issue with this devotional is that I don’t think it stuck very well to the goal of “sabbath rest”. While each devotional mentioned rest in some fashion, much of it was just a more generic devotional.

I first picked this up because the title and beautiful cover caught my attention. I bought this but did not use it consistently for over a year. Then, shortly before quarantine started, I began to read this every morning to start off my day. Not only has it added a great deal of focus to my morning but it has given me an opportunity to anchor myself in God’s truth during an uncertain time in our world history while living in isolation during this virus. I’m so grateful I had this book in my possession and that I have made it a habit of reading the wise words of others who are inspired by God to share His truth. Highly recommend!

A great book of devotions that are derived from "rest" in Scripture. Insightful, truthful, and authentic, these devotions are perfect nuggets to train your mind that rest is found in God, and we must seek Him daily for that rest.
I enjoyed this book and read sections of devotions at a time bc they are grouped by theme. Loved it.

Very convicting. I am one of those people who struggle with making time to rest. I never viewed it from the point that it is a commandment and I was consistently breaking it.

I loved this book. It gives the reader permission to rest. It was written by the three-time cancer survivor Cheryl Wunderlich. (Not Anonymous as stated above.)
The following is a quote from the book review:
"These 100 devotions offer prayers, Scripture verses, personal insights, and biblical perspectives on God’s loving gift and command to us: Rest. Be still. You can experience both rewarding work and rejuvenating rest. Accept God’s invitation, and taste the welcome relief of a life balanced in His rest."
Amen!
