So you tell me what would make a good, quiet girl get herself in trouble, especially when she had so much to lose. Tell me.

Ohhh. That is one seriously cruel and delicious ending. Marie Rutkoski, you are EVIL. In a good way.

I haven’t felt this enthusiastic about the beginning of a YA fantasy series in... well, probably about two years. And people, I'm not gonna lie, it's the romance. Yes, I find so many YA fantasy romances annoying, but when a book gets it just right - just the right amount of

UPDATE

Aaahhh, we've got a new premise and it clarifies some things and intrigues so much!

Set in the world of the New York Times–bestselling Winner’s Trilogy, beloved author Marie Rutkoski returns with an epic LGBTQ romantic fantasy

Omg, I am hyperventilating!

But then she encounters Sid, a rakish traveler from far away

I wonder if maybe it's one of the characters from TWT but under disguise?

The moment I read "Untitled -Marie Rutkoski"? There's no word in any language able to describe what I felt. Try "elated" raised to googolplex and maybe then you'll be getting close to it.

That was my reaction at the close of this book. I had no words, really, beyond being stunned and shocked and so desperate for book two.

THE MIDNIGHT LIE was nothing I ever expected. Knowing this was connected to The Winner's Trilogy doesn't give you any insight into the story or themes or plot and honestly? I kind of liked that.

As far as the connection to the original trilogy, think of this spinoff as what SIX OF CROWS was to The Grisha Trilogy. Some similar worldbuilding, but different

The Midnight Lie is Marie Rutkoski’s triumphant return to YA fantasy with an enchanting, addictive story following a girl unknowingly imprisoned in the Ward, and the traveler who helps her experience the world outside.

In the Ward, where half-Kith are impoverished and criminalised for minuscule things, Nirrim is imprisoned for capturing and returning the Elysium bird. In her cell, she meets a traveler named Sid who harbors a secret. Upon their freedom, Sid proffers Nirrim

There's something that makes me extremely emo (in a good way) about authors whose previously pretty straight books I loved coming up with casual sapphic content. Anyway I'm so here for this!!!

It is a midnight lie, she said.
A kind of lie told for someone else’s sake, a lie that sits between goodness and wrong, just as midnight is the moment between night and morning.

This book….met every expectation I could have had for it. The very first thing I want, no NEED to say in this review, though, is to leave every thought about the Winner’s Trilogy in the back seat. If people “ruin” another book by comparing it to its beloved

Well... I did it. I managed to get an ARC and finished the book in one day. It was wonderful. Glorious. Every little bit of knowledge revealed is a little piece I tuck away in my heart. The revelations. The secrets. The lies. It’s wonderful. And scary. Oh, that ending.

This book is so different from Rutkoski’s previous series. But it has all the wonder and gorgeous writing. I’m curious to see how the second book will play out, especially with the way that it ended. And I sure hope it isn’t the

Noooo - it can't end like that. I want the next book NOW please.

In full
The book is about Nirrim. She is Half Kith and an orphan. She now works at an inn and bakery (& as a forger) for bed and board without pay. The phrase "It is as it is" is one used by people like Nirrim quite often. There are no questions like "Why". The city is dark in places and the law such as it is has a disregard for those of lower status such as Nirrim. On the other hand High Kith can do what they like really.

All of us in the Ward lived our lives around empty spaces, but she became the emptiness.

As a proud fan of The Winner's Trilogy and someone who will forever hold a space in her heart for Kestrel and Arin's stories and love, it would be an understatement to say that I had unreasonably high expectations of this book. Mostly I wanted another chance to immense my mind in Marie's exquisitely finely-wrought prose, to test my
