wow! this was a fun and unique story. in 1679, an old man knocks on Willem Tenner's door and changes his life forever. He becomes a monster. a vampire? a wendigo? i'm not really sure what he is but he's really, really hungry. Fast forward to 1997. Willem is still around, working in a video store. Something or someone is stalking him and it's hungry too. read or listen to this short story to see what happens next! I listened to the audio book. Both narrators did a great job reading. There is some gore in this story but it didn't bother me. I would recommend this story and author. I'd read more by Mr. West.

Listen people, I do NOT like period piece shit AT ALL...if it's older than me then it's not for me. Buuut, Terry is a brilliant storyteller who really knows how to get you interested in things.
This is a fantastic read, full of all the fun things my creep heart craves. You will love it. And if you don't there is something wrong with you, not this.

Honger was quite different than what I expected. Here I thought, oh yeah, another werewolf or vampire story. But, Nooo, it’s much more interesting than that.

The story begins in 1679, Willem Tenner and his family were just settling for a cold winter night, when there was a knock on the door. An old man seeking shelter from the harsh weather was admitted into Willem’s home. That one kind act of compassion sealed Willem’s fate for all eternity.
Fast forward to 1997 and we find Willem working in a video store. His life is comfortable but perhaps a little lonely. You see, Willem has a hunger that needs to be fed as the seasons change. An insatiable hunger that requires meat. Aah, but only one type of flesh will do.

One day while working, a one-legged man walks into the store, this encounter with one Michal J Dott will soon have Willem in a battle against one like himself. It would be so easy for Willem to succumb to Michal’s offer of release, but man’s survival instincts are strong even when death would be a blessing.

I don’t want to say much more as that would give away too much of the plot and ruin this twisted story. But… I will say if you like gore, intensity, and devious thought, you won’t be disappointed with this. Terry West has a way with words that don’t leave anything to the imagination. Full out graphic detail of every bloody scene! Yep, this one’s a must read!

Honger by Terry M. West tells of a good man, Willem Tenner, who in the late 1600’s takes in an injured stranger on a cold, Tarrytown, New York night. The kindness is repaid by the stranger with a lethal attack on the Tenner family and an unhealing bite for Willem that brings on the unnatural honger.

Fast forward to 1997 where the undying Willem sates his relentless “honger” by devouring (and here, I caution, West’s descriptions drip blood and ooze gore) those who’ve given up on their lives, when a new monster threatens to destroy Willem.

Throughout the novella, Willem strives for some humanity even in his monstrously cursed existence, which makes him pitiable protagonist. The surprising last third picks up pace to a break-neck conclusion that’ll satisfy fans of action, visceral violence, and horror.

Author Terry M. West unleashes a beast of a novella in "Honger". Published by MorbidbookS, this read comes in at a perfect length. Some novellas have a hard time finding the perfect balance in length. Some drag on more than it should and others end suddenly without giving the plot the time to come to a conclusion. With this title, the author finds that balance and yet keeps the pace moving

A word of warning for the squeamish. "Honger" is gory and bloody, but it's not just gore for the sake of it. The blood and gore aid in the storytelling. While the story isn't loaded with characters, the ones that are present are vital to the story and fleshed out.

At the beginning, I suspected this would be a tale of a man struggling to come to terms with the curse given to him. But with the appearance of a character later in the story, things take an interesting turn.

Basilius/Basileus: is the Greek spelling and means King or Emperor

De Onheilige Honger/ The Unholy Hunger.

Why is this story getting 5 stars you ask? Author, Terry M. West’s story is very original, horrific, and thought-provoking. He takes this novella, turns it into a full story and gives us a “Legend”. This is not a zombie/vampire story. There are some extreme blood and gory scenes, but much of it is told to you. (So, weak stomachs should be fine.) The storyline and plot just flow and I read it in one sitting. Starts in the past and concludes in the present time. Great character development of Willem that even though what he has become and does to survive, I had mixed feelings at times of sorrow. Especially, with the surprising and even more frightening twist. Once the reveal in the middle, the game of cat and mouse is on. Where the hunter becomes the hunted and a blood-spattered, battle ensues.
Much of the premise is told already so I don’t want to say too much to ruin it. In 1679, Willem Tenner will open his door to help a weakened man and provide him shelter. A chain of shocking events will occur that causes Willem’s downfall. He is now cursed to walk the earth for the rest of life and suffer with the “Honger”. This brings us into 1997, where his secretive life is about to change once again and the rest of the world may perish.

Oh, and for horror film buffs like me will love the nod and get the underlying meaning of actor, Charlton Heston and three of his great movies I saw as a little girl/teen with my parents. “The Planet Of The Apes”, “The Omega Man” and “Soylvent Green”.

Did I forget to say that I loved this horror story ?

Honger is pretty much perfect. I love stories like this. Where you know there’s something off about the main character, and only gradually do you find out what it is. William leads a simple, ordinary life working in a video store (a setting that’s always drenched in nostalgia for me), but he’s one complicated guy when you get to know him. So complicated, even he’s not sure what he is. I won’t give any more away. One of Terry West’s gifts is creating an effective story and a slow-burn sense of dread in the novella format. Highly recommended. A+ from me.

Hunger knows no friend but its feeder…

That is a great line, and one that perfectly exemplifies this short tale from the bloody, gore-strewn pen of Terry M. West. Honger is a sad, violent tale, an otherwise simple story of monstrous cannibalism, but with a solid backstory and well-developed mythology.

Although he's been a monster for over 300 years, Willem Tenner never loses his humanity, making him a surprisingly sympathetic character. Sure, he murders a few people every season, devouring everything but their bones, but he takes no pleasure in it. When the Honger comes on, he is simply powerless to resist. In many ways, this quiet loner reminded me of Bill Bixby in The Incredible Hulk, wandering from life to life, minus the post-transformation shame and guilt.

When another monster arrives on the scene, a man who knows William's darkest most secrets, it's time to walk away from another life - but not before dealing with a few things first. After a slow build of character and mythology, the final third of the story races along, only becoming darker, bloodier, and even more chilling with each development. As for the climax, West always nails his endings, and this is no exception.

This was a graphic and horrific tale. There is no real redemption perhaps, but it was interesting and brutal. The narration didn't work for me, however. I don't think I will read this one again, there wasn't a mystery or deeper meaning in the telling. The scariest part of it was when Michael informed Willem that there could be many more of them because they could be right next to each other and never even know that the other had the eternal hunger. I really liked that it was in the first person perspective and I liked how it ended.

Something Different

Wilem seemed to be doing great with a family and a prosperous farm...until an old stranger came knocking on his door one night.
That was back in the 1600s....now Wilem is what visited him that night and its now the present. So far he has been careful but someone lets him know that they know what he is. Will he be able to survive the encounter?
This reminded me of The Wendigo by Masterton..if u want something different...pick this up!!!

Definetly a page turner. Starts years ago and brings the reader to modern times. The history of the characters was done splendidly. The characters dealt with their own hell while putting others through pain. I only wish the story continued longer.
