“Ecuațiile matematicii, notele partiturii muzicale și personificările mitului traversează dincolo de purgatoriul ce separă cele două lumi. Ele oferă o viziune seducătoare ce pare să aducă în ochii vizibilului invizibilul, o seducție ce creează ideea iluzorie că matematica, muzica și mitul sunt celălalt tărâm. Suntem tentați să credem că adevărul lumii invizibile este matematic și că poate fi exprimat printr-o singură ecuație a câmpului unificat și/sau că poate fi prins în armonia muzicală a sferelor și/sau că este întruchipat de creaturi și forțe mitice, creaturi cu nume și formă care manipulează factorii ce definesc vizibilul. Sunt trei modalități de a transpune misterul invizibilului în proceduri vizibile cu care putem opera: matematicile superioare, notația muzicală și imaginile mitice. Suntem atât de vrăjiți de această transpunere a misterului în sisteme, încât confundăm sistemul cu misterul însuși; pe când ele sunt doar indicii ale misterului, nicidecum echivalențe.
