African penguins waddle around nesting colonies in lower numbers than ever before. Despite South African government efforts to protect the penguin colonies and their ocean fish supply, young penguins still struggle to survive. Fuzzy chicks waiting for food in open nests may overheat in the sun or become prey. Others simply may not get enough food to survive on their own on ...more

Just another good title from Sandra Markle. Her series on animals are sure bets for young readers interested in animals, the environment, and science.

The African penguin is endangered for a number of reasons: habitat loss, over-fishing, and environmental disaster to name a few. When scientists started to put their heads together to figure out how to try to save the bird, some of their solutions didn't work out. They thought about providing nesting boxes to make up for habitat loss, but the boxe

The most recent addition to Markle's books about animals at risk focuses on the African penguins, which waddle around nesting colonies in lower numbers than ever before. Despite South African government efforts to protect the penguin colonies and their ocean fish supply, young penguins still struggle to survive. I was so happy to get selected to preview this book because I am a big fan of Sandra Markle's series "What if You Had Animal..." in my preschool science classroom.

I was immediately drawn to the beautiful photographs in the book The Great Penguin Rescue, a necessity in nonfiction for younger learners, in my opinion. For preschoolers, this book is far too wordy but could be easily adapted because the captions contain enough factual information and are short enough to keep their attention. Additio

Markle, Sandra The Great Penguin Rescue, 44 pages. Millbrook (Lerner), 2017. $30. Content: G.

Markle has done it again. Adding to her other books about saving endangered species, she hits another homerun with this book about penguins nesting on the coasts of South Africa. Her writing is strong and clear, easy enough for a fourth grader, but detailed enough for a seventh grader. The entire series is a great supplement to the Scientists in the Field series from Houghton Mifflin.

EL, MS – ESSENTIAL.

Another solid entry in "The Great Rescue" series. I hope there will be more. This one's about saving the African penguins off the coast of S. Africa and Namibia. As usual, the storytelling is fascinating. The photos compelling, many are full-page. An interesting design detail has the text flowing from one page to the next.

Solid information, with appealing photos of both adults and the downy young. Near the end, the author tells about three other breeds, and I would like to have seen a map of where these penguins live. I know, as an adult who is fairly good at geography, but most elementary students would need the added help of a map.

Good information text for young readers. Great pictures. Its well written in that the author explains things very well without using large words that will confuse kids. I learned a great deal and enjoyed it.

Well written. Lots of great information and photos. Somehow I wasn't familiar with penguins living in Africa.

This is a delightful children’s book about the penguins of South Africa. We are going on a whale and penguin watch next month out of Capetown so I enjoyed this very much!

Interesting and well researched about the plight of the African penguins. Photography is stellar. Markle provides good back matter in the end.

Follow the remarkable story of an endangered species and the scientists and volunteers dedicated to saving it. Since the 1800s, the population of the African penguin has diminished from four million to less than 30,000 breeding pairs, mostly due to human interference and climate change. Now humans may be the penguins’ last chance at survival. Will they be up to the task? Take a peek at some of their efforts, from cleaning up oil spills and creating artificial burrows to rescuing abandoned eggs a ...more

African penguins have been on the decline for several centuries. Sandra Markle explains how and why that happened, and what people are now doing to try and bring these penguins’ numbers back up.

I may be a teensy bit biased because I adore all things penguin, but I thought this was excellently done. Markle’s very readable and engaging text is accompanied by lots and lots of wonderful penguin photos. And not just average penguin photos, they were not only cute and funny, but in-the-midst-of-action
