Jean Laffite has been called everything from a blood thirsty pirate to a gentleman corsair. Tales of his adventures, fights, and buried treasure have been told, fictionalized and made into movies. He smuggled slaves with Jim Bowie and fought beside Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. The author traces Laffite's life from his birth to his days at Barataria and to his final years on Galveston and Mujeres Islands. Index and Endnotes. 209 pages. Eakin Press.
the tag should say read by the hardest. I can't even give this ONE lousy star. Aside from the writing style well...NOT having ANY style, I'm pretty sure a LOT of the information was WRONG. I am a fan of Pirate history, and I enjoy reading about one who is in some ways Local to my home (er..even though HONESTLY there ARE more interesting choices, in my humble opinion anyway), but THIS book was about as enjoyable and informative as a rock. To qoute Groucho,(or Parker, it's sort of unclear WHO really said it) this is not a book to be set aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force
This is more of a biography of Jean Laffite, one of the subjects of Patriotic Fire. It's more of a history, but gives personal details (that are known) of the live and loves of the pirate.
