Three and a half
The beginning of a new series by this author and it's certainly off to a good start. We are introduced to Kaye a fairy who knows her own mind and doesn't care if she stands out. She's not the typical blonde, waif like Fae but loves rocking her curves and blood red locks, yes Kaye is never going to be a conformist ! I love Darius & Kaye! This is an exciting story! I enjoyed getting to know Darius and Kaye as well as the secondary characters, who I think will be rising in the up and coming books. Darius and Kaye are both strong characters and I loved their interactions; they were witty and fun and had me smiling. I would have enjoyed even more of them, and hope their story will continue in the next book.

A Great Start to a New Series!

I pre-ordered this book, then had a chance to read a pre-release copy so I jumped at it. I’m so glad that I did. Faeries, mages, witches, shifters, gargoyles and Dragons…oh my!

Gotta start with the name of the heroine, Kaye. Admittedly, I’m partial to this name since it’s my middle name. I don’t see or hear it much so it’s was an instant attraction. While it's not an uncommon name or nickname, it’s not every day I find a main character with the name.

Author Catherine Vale has an amazing Urban Fantasy Series here! I love the combination of Faerie, Shifters, Vampires, Demons and other Creatures of Magic! Such continuous action the pace of this story I'd phenomenal. I really loved her characters, Kaye the spirited Fae, so alive in All she does. Magic Fire: an Urban Fantasy Novel by Catherine Vale is the first installment in the Shifting Magic series.
Meet Kaye, a powerful fae and Darius, a dragon shifter.

Kaye is a fairy, and like all fairies needs to refresh her magic in the forest. On her yearly fairy camping trip with her sister fae she runs across the gorgeous Darius. A dragon shifter she can't get out of her head. Except he disappears for a week before returning and warning her she's in danger.

I loved this book so much. I loved that Kaye was a strong and not typical fae.. i loved that there are dragons.. I liked darius but I wanted more about him.. more about who he is etc.. but he was still so strrong and sexy and lovable.. This was a pretty cool story. It was about a shifter and a Fae aka fairy. I truly liked that Kaye was not like any other fae. She was different from the rest and had her own personality. She did not feel like she had to be this perfect person all the time.

Daruis who was this sexy dragon shifter he also worked as a body guard. He was attracted to Kaye the moment he lied eyes on her. Each one had their own burden to bare.

This first book kicks off this new series with a bang. I was sucked right in from the beginning and I couldn't put the book down. I really liked Kaye. She's kick butt, but has a vulnerable side to hides pretty well. What a great start for this series. It's a very interesting and entertaining read this story doesn't offer much heat unless you consider there was a dragon involved. But that didn't take away from the story at all both Darius and Kaye had plenty of sexually tension to keep you going. Have you ever heard the old saying, those who can write, write; those who cannot write, become critics. That's not really true, because I have had things published, and do reviews here and on goodreads plus a few other places. What is this writer's need to keep dropping the 'f' bomb? I can't even spell out the word without amazon TOS flagging or deleting my review, Kindle Unlimited

I can't even spell out the word without amazon TOS flagging or deleting my review, which means those parts can't even be quoted in a review so shouldn't even be in the book. Also, it was slow for the longest time, but with it being the first of a series set up didn't overly pay attention to that. What did keep catching my attention was such things as 'walking on the tips of her toes' type things. Have you ever tried to walk on the 'tips' of your toes, without being a ballerina? Is it supposed to really be believable, not about the fae or the shapeshifter, but a possible life and death situation and all the chick is thinking about is the total stranger she wanders upon in a cave?

There are also parts can't tell if it's supposed to be quoted as in conversation or it's internal thinking of some sort. Lack of commas and other standandard English practices seem to hold no relevance in this story. In the blurb after mentioning she's a fae, it said Evil is about to invade Kaye’s ordinary life, determined to bind her within its torturous grasp with monsters and mayhem around every corner. ,,,,uh how is being fae a 'normal' life and considering the fae part and gargoyles and all, how would being around warlocks and so on be unusual? And what is up with the supposed weigh issues, comes off as fat shaming. Then it's back to repeated references to her being fae, uh yeah, we got that several dozen references back. How does anyone talk in this, since half the time someone is biting the inside of their cheek or their lip or smirking, and btw no one can 'smirk sexily'. One line she can tell he's not lying, and the next one she is thinking whatever he said could be truth of lie but she didn't know because she didn't know him that well...uh what?

The delivery guy she tips extra because he's always super speedy and the food is still hot, yet she didn't bother to even put the food out for 3 more hours. What does the mention of shower sex converstation in any way further any actual story line. Men who have hair on their chests do not cook shirtless, especially things such as bacon, or they aren't hairy and/or burn or scar free for long. She's already showed him the special iron free water in her fridge so why and how could he make coffee with no water but a bunch of creamer, makes no sense. Neither does 3 short paragraphs from cracking 2 eggs and boom they are done. And she's basically been wanting to sleep with him from right at the beginning of the book, yet she doesn't want to loan him her house key so he can set up security devices? She's almost a carboard character, part steriotypical chick crap. The 'deal' they made, made no sense at all. Sliding doors that lead out to a balcony are NOT ''in front of the balcony'' it's between the room and and balcony. During life or death situations, one does NOT worry about a security deposit, and if you really believe you 'ARE the weapon' then why right after that throw cutlery at a gargoyle, much less roll under one with 'enhanced fae ability' besides the main point of is it floating or what, how do you roll under it. This is less a supernatural book and more 90210 teen hormonal crap angst.

The story is jumpy as if parts were taken out or put in at the last moment, just almost inserted randomly such as talking about his kicking a chunk of the door when no door was busted, the guy was let through an intact front door and the sliding glass doors are not wooden but glass so hardly could be kicking at a 'chunk of broken door' that in earlier mention was shattered apart.Blah blah blah, had to start skipping pages or review would be longer than the book. And the ending totally didn't make sense. Yet another story by this writer than could have and should have been so much better than it was, and actually causes me to debate a bit on a 2. ...more

The story starts off slow, and doesn't get really exciting until the second half of the book. There was not much development in the romance between Kaye and Darius in the first half of the book. There is some talking and hanging out, and a little kissing, but nothing exciting or noteworthy. Kaye has a lot of libido, and wants Darius. Darius is really hot and wants to protect Kate. The magical kingdom is gearing up for war, but are they ready for what is coming? There's an instant connection between Kaye and Darius when they meet and spend a couple of hours together, but just when Kaye, who happens to be a fairy, is ready to admit she's never going to hear from dragon shifter Darius again, he shows up at her door telling her he is there to protect her from danger, which she scoffs at. Circumstances prove him right and they discover it's not only her in danger but all supernaturals, because an evil warlock has just declared war.

I found this book to be a great and unique mix of paranormal romance and urban fantasy. We have all you typical magic contenders such as fairies, witches and warlocks but we also see gargoyles and your not so typical shifters. The author manages to create a world that is both new and interesting but tried and true all at the same time- giving the paranormal lover more than enough to keep them invested in the book and lives of the characters,

I have mixed feelings about this book....on one hand I enjoyed the overall story but it took ages to get to that point and at times it felt like a chore to read. Also, the relationship seemed forced, no build up or heated moments - just straight in there with the smooching and I wasn't invested at all. It was an interesting premise - I liked the concept enough to finish the book since I hoped something would eventually click and I'd start enjoying it - but I didn't care for the execution. I just finished this book, and am now a big fan of Catherine Vale. I’m more of a fantasy gal than a romance gal, but when they meld together like this book does I review it. I loved the storyline, the writing is excellent, the characters well-developed and interesting, the humor real and funny. Sizzle is building just the way it should be, and the world-building is progressing well. I’m already reading the second book to see where it goes. Excellent book overall!
