I enjoyed this more than I thought I would - which (almost) always' happens, when trying out a new author.

From the outset (prologue) it was spookily atmospheric, where three employees of Lee Templeton (John, Curtis and Rob) are sent to Devil's Island to find out why the latest construction crew left in haste. Two work-crews have abandoned the project in the past few months - they saw things, and complained the place was haunted - so there wasn't much work done. They're also there to document wh

DEVIL'S ISLAND, by Mark Lukens, is probably my favorite novel that I've read by him, to date. He combines the most desolate, eerie atmosphere along with a cast of well-defined characters--inventing a story that was impossible to pull myself out of once I had started.

". . . there was something on this island, something very bad . . ."

Billionaire producer and directer, Nick Gorman, has had an unhealthy obsession with the place known as Devil's Island for years. The large, gothic Thornh

Review of DEVIL'S ISLAND by Mark Lukens

DEVIL'S ISLAND is a delightfully scary book with lots of hauntings and terrors beyond hauntings. A small Caribbean island, deserted for a century, is the focus of first a corporate attempt to remodel the mansion into a resort, and second, of a billionaire filmmaker who allegedly wishes to film a documentary. But the Thornhill Manor is no ordinary abandoned residence, and the island is no ordinary island. Nicknamed “Devil's Island” by natives in the 19th cen

Mr. Luken's is one of my favorite indie authors, and I normally love his stories. So, I was a bit surprised at how little I liked this one. It started out with great momentum, and I thought for sure it would scare me silly. Not so much. The scariest thing for me was the basement, because basements scare the bojangles outta me. "Thanks, childhood." Honestly, it was a story that I've read numerous times. Some better, and a few worse. I'll be waiting for the next book!

Not my favorite book by this author. Ended up skipping portions because I just wanted it to be over. Maybe because stories about haunted houses tend to be the same thing told in slightly various ways so they don't surprise me anymore.

Great book!

This book sounded scary so I bought it- it did not disappoint! Devil's Island has a horrible history among locals, and is so secluded no one knows about it. Someone purchases the island and tries to build a resort. The contractors have some accidents and refuse to stay. A millionaire producer finally purchases the island after years of being denied by the original owners and gathers a team of experts to prove supernatural entities live on the property. However, he has a different actu

There is an island in the Caribbean, that is called Devil's Island. The island has a bloody past and is hiding some deep dark secrets. The former owner of the island, wants to turn Thornhill Manor into a resort. After sending a couple of groups of contractors down to the island, strange things begin to happen. Freak accidents begin to happen, and the workers refuse to stay on the island. Billionaire Nick Gorman, who is a famous movie producer, wants to buy the island. Gorman assembles a team to ...more

Great Horror Storyline but slow with few horror scares

There were great moments in this book that produced a few scares, but overall I was a little disappointed. Mark Lukens does a fantastic job to scare the daylights out of you in Ancient Enemy, but Devil's Island just gives so much story with little action. It reminds me more of an adventure tale and not a story of great horror. The characters were great and the location was right out of a Halloween movie. The storyline was great and the book d

I loved this book.
Once started you can't get it out of your head.
It was not extreme horror or extreme gore, no, but there was enough creepiness in it to give you nightmares hehe. Good job Mark Lukens.

Awesome read!

This story had me on edge the entire time. I never wanted to put it down. Nonstop from beginning to end it was truly a great read!

Interesting story, ok book

The positives: there's an interesting plot here, with decent characters loaded with motivation and conflicts. The anticipation builds in waves and at times you want to flip the pages to find out what happens next. The setting is rich and vibrant.
The negatives: the characters are a bit of a cliche. You know exactly what will happen with them because it happens with every character like them in every other story. And oh my many times can an author use the word

Couldn't put it down!

I really enjoyed this book. It had elements of  camaraderie, fear, and the unknown, which I love.  The author did a great job with the story, and kept it solid the whole way through. The characters were developed enough that I either liked or disliked them, rooted for them,  etc. But I mostly appreciate that it was fast paced and there were no ridiculous decisions made by some of the characters. It seems that in a lot of books, particularly this genre,  I'm constantly saying

This looked interesting and I picked it up without checking into Mark Lukens long pedigree as a horror writer. Devil's island met my expectations and then some. Yes, it is scary; at times terrifying but most importantly, the characters are relatable; you go along on the journey with them. Devil's island is situated somewhere in the Caribbean; isolated, overrun with vegetation and a deserted mansion that is rumored to be haunted. Billionaire producer Nick Gorman is determined to get to the bottom ...more

Hooks you from the beginning and doesn't let go

I really enjoyed this book. My only real complaint is the nightmares it caused while I was reading it, no seriously! To nit pick some Shane's repetitive thoughts toward the end I could have done without, but otherwise there was good character development. The intensity of the story hooked me from the beginning and didn't let go. This is the first book I've read by this author and I hope his other books are this captivating! I liked that though it ce

Mark Lukens has once again captivated his reader here with very well developed characters and strong story line. Haunted house stories are told all the time and probably the most classic one being the Overlook hotel.
Thornhill manor is different than Kings masterpiece due to the physical manifestations blended in with the background psychological baggage of each of the characters. Thornhill becomes the most intriguing character throughout the book as Mark finds a way to weave his demonic / alien

Spooky as all get out. Do NOT read it in the dark!

Having happily read many thrillers and nail biters, I looked forward to a lazy afternoon reading Devil's Island. I got comfy, opened up my kindle fire, and the next thing I knew, the day had faded into night and I was sitting in a dark room reading the terrifying conclusion.
I HAD to turn on a light to reassure myself that there was nothing in the room with me. Mark Lumens is an incredible author with the ability to suck the reader into his imagi

A group of people hired to spend two nights in a massive haunted house ,on an island in the middle of nowhere. Nothing to worry about ...right? WRONG!!!! Mark Lukens manages to take us on a heart stopping horror ride with genuine moments of heart attack inducing fear throughout this whole story, while keeping us suspenefully entertained and captivated by what happens next. A genuinely scary house and a wonderfully written story of haunting evil! Took me back to The Legend Of Hell House in

I have been on a 'haunted house' kick lately. I have read several and enjoyed most of them. This one had a twist on the run of the mill haunted house. You can't always cure a haunting by righting a wrong. Sometimes all you can do is just survive and be thankful you walked away. There was several characters but they were 'fleshed' out very well. I read this in two days because I just had to know what happened next. You won't be disappointed.

A very exciting and gripping story!

The author puts together several interesting characters in an exotic setting. They all have past encounters with the paranormal which are gradually revealed to the reader. Slowly the danger lurking in their surroundings begins to reveal itself! Wow! This book won't let go! This is not my favorite genre but I found it to be a great read! Worth all the stars!

Different twist on an old legend

I enjoyed this book, and realized I have also read "Ancient Enemy", by this author. This is a great horror story that pulls you in with some back story, good character development, twists, turns, and surprises along the way. This kept me up late into the night, provided some good nail biting fun, and delivered on the "jump scare", had I been watching it as a movie.

Creepy, but in the best way

I really enjoyed this book. It took some time to get going but that was from character back stories, so I didn't mind the pace. The story reminded me at times of Stephen King's Rose Red, which definitely helped with the creepy factor. The ending left me wanting more, but not in an unsatisfied way, just curious as to what could happen next. Definitely a good read!

I wasn't sure how I was going to like this at first but it turned out to be a pretty good book! Had me interested in it not to far into it and I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I had a feeling that there was something to one of the main characters and I was right but still it was very interesting! I do recommend this book to anyone who likes this genre of books.

Nick has hired a group of people to experience the paranormal adventures. Its been said that the Thornhill Manor has everything that he's been looking for, but it soon turns to chaos and turmoil for everyone.
This book was very intriguing and a major page turner! I highly recommend reading this thriller/ horror.

Nice haunted house story

This is my first read from this author. I enjoyed the story. It was a quick and entertaining adventure. I guess I would consider it a cozy ghost story. There were no gory scenes or anything to make this a real horror story. It’s good for those that like tame paranormal reads.

Perfect for a rainy day!

All in all, this was a well told story. Although it seemed to drag in a place or two, it was quite suspenseful and even had me on the edge of my seat at times. If you like scary stories, haunted houses, and close encounters, some deadly and some not, you will enjoy this haunting read.

Decent Horror Story

This wasn't a bad story. Took a while to get into any real depth , but was very suspenseful , creepy and entertaining . I wasn't sure what was at the center of the story but the eventual reveal was nice touch. There are places where it was truly scary and I enjoyed that immensely . Good book .

Would Recommend

It was engaging, if not a little obvious after a while what was going on. The characters were likeable and nothing felt rushed or forced in terms of the plot or the links between the characters. Out did take a little while to get to the good stuff, but there was buildup and the build-up paid off well so it worked out. It was a good read.

Good and scary

This book has a really nice pace, aided by relatively short chapters. (I love books like that.). It has interesting and very well developed characters. The story line is intriguing, and it makes you want to find out just what in the world are they doing in that mansion. And to top it off, it has a pretty decent spooky factor.

Excellent paranormal thriller

This is the first of Lukens' novels that I have read and I will definitely be reading more. The storyline captured my attention immediately and moved quickly. The writing was extremely well done which is very important to me. The setting was fascinating and the ending totally unexpected. I recommend this novel highly.
