Angela Carter: The Rational Glass
Shadow Dance (1966), Heroes and Villains (1969), The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972), Wise Children 1991, and other novels and story collections by feminist author Carter are critically examined. Treating the novels chronologically, the author argues that Carter's themes remained consistent throughout her work, although he points to transitions of treatment within her opus. The major themes he finds within her works are her opposition to philosophical postmodernism and her devotion to reason and empiricism as part of a metaphysical materialism.
