Supposedly, this book can be read as a standalone, but I felt like I was missing something.

Paul and Zane's story begins in the last book of another series. Paul, who comes out of the closet and gets a divorce at age 39, is an ER doctor who hits on a nurse, Ben, at work.

The backstory is summarized here, but the consequences of Paul's behavior (he's put on paid leave while a sexual harassment suit against him is investigated) are the main plot point.

Zane, a college student, is violently attacke

Very Nice Surprise

I was very surprised that I liked this so much. We were introduced to Paul in book 1, and he came off as a pervy creep to me. I really didn't know how he would redeem himself. It turns out, he is just lonely and scared. He is going through a divorce after denying his sexuality for his whole life. He has almost no experience, and is overwhelmed by his freedom to try dating. He ended up being a stand up guy. Zane has aged overnight after coming out and being rejected by his famil
Everyone is talking about the huge age gap between the characters in this book, but while I was reading it, I don't feel it at all. I think it might be due to Dr. Paul Johnston inexperience with men and only just came out of the closet. I wish I actually read the previous book Heart Trouble to know about what he did there that make the nurses in the hospital hate him and resulting in a sexual harassment complaint. I thought Paul is very endearing with his nurturing nature and his protectiveness ...more

I was really happy when I got the info that Zane got his own book.
We get to know him in Heart Trouble, the 6th book in the Ashe Sentinel series.

Zane is a really interesting figure, I was wondering how he is displayed and we knew he didn't have it easy.

This fact is taken in the book and it's the first thing we get to know when we start the book as reader.

It is really great, how D.J. Jamison developes the book, how sh

Jamison successfully redeems her jerk doctor from book one

I loved how DJ successfully managed to transform book one's slightly creepy and somewhat jerkish Dr Paul into a truly kind and caring man.

Misunderstandings, fear and inexperience had led him to act like an idiot but meeting Zane after he'd been assaulted by his step-dad gave Paul a jolt and watching this unlikely pairing fall in love was lovely.

There's also double virgin sex in this one which was handled with care, emotionally rewar

Bedside Manner takes an age gap romance and gives it a bit of a twist. Zane is a young college student, but after coming out to his family, then being assaulted, he’s been through a hell of a lot more than most guys his age-giving him an unexpected level of maturity at his age. Paul is a successful ER doctor, but he is pretty new to his out-of-the-closet status-so even though he is almost twenty years older than Zane, he is inexperienced in this new aspect of his life.

What a great book.

I appreciated this story for its sense of realism right from the start. Both MCs are both frustratingly lovable and terribly flawed, each with detailed and justifiable backstories that shed light on the development of these juxtapositions within their personalities. They are also perfectly mismatched, if that makes any sense. With an 18 year age discrepancy, they are in glaringly different stages in life, a sobering reality both are all too aware of. Well that was different. I honestly can't decide if I kinda liked it or really did not. The author's writing style was actually very good, but the characters were decidedly unlikable. I definitely didn't really care if they got their HEA or not, and I wasn't 100% sure that wasn't actually the author's intention all along..? A part of me has a morbid curiosity to read the story of Gage and Ben - but I probably won't. There are too many great books out there to waste my time.

A rather unlikeable character is redeemed!

Bedside Manner is about two secondary characters from Heart Trouble. You don't need to have read Heart Trouble to enjoy this one but I recommend doing so because: 1. It's a great book and 2. You will gain some background information on Zane and Paul before reading their story in Bedside Manner.

Bedside Manner is a perfect May/December type of romance. Zane is 21, Paul is 39. Now some people might think that big of an age difference is creepy but Zane is

I struggled with this one a bit because the author included some great, very thoughtful topics, from both Zane and Paul’s viewpoints. It was about coming out in the midst of homophobia and fear, Zane’s experience as a young man, and Paul as an older, once married, closeted man, and the way other people judge and make assumptions. I disliked some of the plot’s execution, such as too many scenes of Paul pushing Zane away, but really liked the portrayals o

I have been waiting for this book!! After reading Heart Trouble, an I recommended reading Heart Trouble first. I have been wanting Zane's story.

Zane has had a lot of life altering things happen to him. He's a college student trying to make it in the world. He just wants to be who he is and not hide. He thought coming out to his parents would be a good thing. He was so so so wrong. After his dad kicks him out he goes to his mom. His step-father beats him near to death for telling them he's gay.

Second book in the Hearts and Health series, this is a book about Zane - the young man we met in Heart Trouble and a Paul, the ER doctor who treated him. Zane is twenty and Paul thirty-nine when we meet them but this isn't a typical May-December romance. Paul is coming off a failed marriage and is only newly out as gay, Zane has been rejected by his family and beaten for coming out - both have their issues but I definitely felt that Paul was the more emotionally immature of the two, d

If you’re not into younger/older romances – this one revolves around 21-year-old Zane and 39-year-old Paul – then this one isn’t for you. I frankly have no issues with it – in fiction as in life, you don’t pick who you fall in love with or why – and Zane is wise beyond his chronological years, even if he still harbors some youthful relationship insecurity. Paul is just learning how to love – really, also learning how to freely live his life as the gay man he is, instead of hiding beyond others’ ...more

I have a special place in my heart for this book, especially as I got a chance to hold it close and be a part of it. That being said, onto the review.

Out of left field, author DJ Jamison left the newsroom of Ashe Sentinel and rolled into the city's hospital. We are reintroduced to Zane, who had been Physically attacked in by his stepfather in Heart Trouble (Ashe Sentinel Connections #6) and treated by the infalliable Hot Doc, Paul Johnston.

All the books in the Ashe Sentinel Series are good. I mean real good. This one however tops them all. What a way to start a new series. After meeting Both Paul and Zane in Heart Trouble I want them to get their stories. Having it be them together in this one was even better. Seeing how they both overcome their pasts and insecurities in the journey to be together was an emotional ride. I felt anger and sadness and at times, joy and happiness. Some places I laughed out loud. I especially loved get ...more

The story we have been waiting for since Heart Trouble. The story of the obsessive doctor and the lonely student. They seem like an odd couple yet fit perfectly with each other. In this book we explore the past of Paul and get an understanding of his actions in the previous novel. We learn that he is new to being free and his feelings of inferiority when it comes to being with Zane. Zane on the other hand is dealing with being rejected his by

This is a sweet story about student Zane, who ends up in the ER after being assaulted by his stepfather and older doctor Paul who treats him.

Paul is protective of Zane right off the bat but things get complicated when Paul is off work on paid leave pending an investigation into accusations made against him. This emphasises Paul's insecurities as he was previously married to a woman and only recently started living as a gay man.

I enjoyed Paul and Zane together. it was cute that Zane was more cer

Zane and Paul!!

I was several pages into the first chapter before I realized it was part of the Ashe Sentinel world! I was so excited!! It's especially interesting because Paul was this creepy, douchebag doctor in Heart Trouble. I think it's always more intriguing to see the turnabout of a character and Paul definitely redeemed himself here.

I wish it went on longer though. The ending seems a little unresolved for me. Perhaps I expected something different? Either way, I loved it!

I had to pick this book to review just for the title. I love books with medical characters, or medical settings. The book was well researched (although I disagree to some extent with how conservatively the author interpreted the ethics of doctor/patient romantic involvement) and well written. The conflicts were plausible, as were the resolutions. I just never really connected to either of the characters as much as I would hav

This was a surprising 4 star read! It’s the first time I’ve read this author and I’m not usually into the doctor jargon thing, but this book surprised in the best way possible! In his late 30s, Dr. Johnston is finally trying to be himself – only to have his life fall apart again, right before his eyes. He is an excellent ER doctor, but his personal life is in shambles following a divorce from his wife… after knowing he was gay for all of the years they were together. And in his ER room, rolls in ...more

I enjoyed this book.
I have not read the previous book that is referenced by character appearance but I could, by inference, get the gist of the storyline as it affected this one. That said, I got a good feel for what Zane and Paul had experienced in the past.
Zane had been made to feel inadequate and shunned by those who should have supported him no matter what. His anger and pain, both physical and mental, were palpable. His excitement over the possibility of something more with Paul was at tim

Paul and Zane's story began at the end of the first book in the series, Heart Trouble. I wouldn't recommend that this book be read as a standalone, there's too much of a crossover from book one.

I was horrified by what had happened to Zane, however, it is this which puts him in contact with Paul Johnston. This is the doctor in the first book who, to be honest, did came across a bit creepy in that story.

In fact, I was prepared to totally carry on disliking the guy. Anyhow, I grew to like him him b

We met Paul and Zane in Heart Trouble. Paul didn't come across a a good guy. Zane is the victim of a vicious beating when he came out to his mother and step father. Paul is his ER doctor.

Paul, newly divorced, has finally admitted to himself that he is gay. He hasn't always been a nice guy, rumors of improper behavior with a patient and making advances to a male nurse.

Zane is depressed after getting out of the hospital needing someplace to live and fighting depression.

4.5 Stars ★ A great book. I loved the characters and yes Dr Mark gets his redemption back from book 1 in this series. Well sort off he definitely takes his time about it. Just a matter of getting his priorities right. Gage and Ben hover over Zane which drives him crazy lol. I'd love to see a photo of Pokha Dot, the dog, she'd definitely had fun with exploring Mark's house especially his shoes. A beautiful ending for these two. I've already read Xavier's story and loved it as well, more than this ...more

After reading Heart Trouble, I was eager to read Zane's story and I wasn't left disappointed.

When Zane came out of the closet; he never expected his dad to give him an ultimatum or his mum not to call 911 when he was being brutally beaten by his stepdad. His life changes quickly and he finds himself moving out and making a fresh start. When Paul arrives at his dad's house to help him move; sparks fly between them. Will Paul bring more disappoint in his life?

Paul completely surprised me because

I really enjoyed this story of love between an older and younger man. Paul Johnston, is an older man, who has finally come out of the closet. He meets a young college student, Zane, in the ER, when he comes in for treatment after being severely beaten. Here begins a friendship that is forbidden professionally, doctors and patients cannot fratenize with each other. I loved their relationship and the banter that went on between them. At times they were extremely amusing

Not as glossy and spectacular as I had hoped, but still a decent read. I really liked Zane in the first book as the stalking horse to Ben and Gage's romance. In this book, he just takes second place to Dr. Johnston who is twice his age, a creeper, and he knows he's a creeper. I found myself feeling like charge nurse Alex towards him, and it wasn't conducive to a sexy love story. I think DJJ could have gone further to make his character more likeable because as is, his character just had a squick ...more

After reading Heart Trouble, I wasn't sure how I felt about Zane or Dr. Johnston... but after reading Bedside Manner, I see they were both just misunderstood. I just didn't feel the attraction between the Mc's .
I liked Paul's sort off redemption because in the previous story he came across as a pervert also I felt a bit sorry for him because the nurses held his little infatuation for Ben against him and they were quite judgemental because he was newly divorced

Zane the young one of the two MCs is sort of bratty and I had a hard time connecting with him. Paul, the older MC and a doctor is just a blushing sweetie. I liked his character. He is just recently out of the closet at his age after a divorce and is trying, and failing, to casually ask men out on dates appropriately. However, his courtship needs some work.
