Bubbles and the Berry Bush is a picture book by Shannon L. Mokry, and illustrated by Callan Clark. The book introduces us to Bubbles, a dragon who has gone to pick berries with his friends, Prince Vash and Princess Charlotte, a pair of kids who can understand the languages of all sorts of magical creatures. However, today the fairies are upset about people picking the berries from their bushes.

I think it’s an interesting story, and I appreciate that the princess primarily ask what the problem is, and tries to talk through the problem. I think kids can learn a lot about that lesson, and her behaviour. I thought she was a really strong character, and I admire that she took the initiative to try and compromise. And another interesting portion to the book is it also has a little bit about food wastage. And I think it’s important because it teaches kids a little bit about how their wastage can mean that other people/ creatures have less, because there isn’t as much to share. I think the book was well written.

The illustrations are incredibly well done. The artist has put in so many great details, and it’s clear that they’ve put a lot of time and effort into all of the pages. They’ve done really good work with all sorts of characters and creatures in the book, as well as the scenery.

Overall, it’s a perfect book. I think a lot of kids would love to read it, and to see all the incredible drawings.

Modern Day Traditional Fairytale

How nice to see a modern and magical fairytale beginning with the traditional introduction, “once upon a time.”

This story has traditional characters such as Prince Vash, Princess Charlotte, and a friendly dragon named Bubbles. The story also features magical creatures like sprites and fairies.

The story touches on relationships, diversity and acceptance. It also touches on conservation, greed and the impact of misuse on others. There is also a lesson about taking a moment to pause (in this case fairies being bubbled) and not judging people based on the actions of others. Many lessons to be had with this story.

Also, this is Callan Clark’s book illustration debut! She brought a traditional and whimsical feel to this book with her illustrations. Lots of detail and colour. I felt that she took us back to medieval times. Well done, Callan!

In this book, we meet bubbles the dragon, the prince Vash, Princess Charlotte, and the fairies. They live in a magical land. I like the style of the story, it is a kids fairy tale. In this story, we see a conflict with the fairies and a moral story. This book also has a lovely illustration. The author Shannon L Mokry have more books of Bubbles the Bubble Blowing Dragon.

I recommend this book for kids ages 3-7.
