*I received a copy of this novel for free in exchange for an honest review*

Yaneera, the young Empress of Andara, faces a dilemma. With drought, starvation and death ravaging her Kingdom, she must choose between aligning herself with a stranger who brings promise of salvation or risk a rebellion of her own citizens. With neighbouring Kingdoms’ seeking to turn Andara’s crisis into their opportunity, no matter what Yaneera does war will be an inevitable outcome.

When I started reading When The Gods War, I was a little confused but a little intrigued. What confused me was that the author chose not include the characters from the first book until about halfway through. Instead, he built up the nations and people of the Sevalorn, who were briefly mentioned in the first book. I am actually glad that he did that because there was so much back story to the nation of Andara, The Plains of Kairon, the kingdoms of Vitaem, Tres Cidea, and Khashish, the forests of ...more

This is the second book in the series, and I think it actually outshines the first book. A world divided with the water controlled by a single city. This is a world in crisis. Throw in a war of gods, with this divided world as the battlefield and you get a solid fantasy with action, compelling characters and mythology mixed in.

The characters are complex, and as such, it adds layers and depths to the choices they make. Yaneera especially. Do you foresake your beliefs to save your people? This is

Could hardly wait to start this second book in the series. I expected it to start off with the same fasting pace as the first book The Coronation of Kings but it started off slower by filling in the backstory of what had happened in the worlds that lead to the first book and this second then picked up. It did result in a few aha moments as the piece of the puzzle slowly fell into place. Once it got going the pace was a lot faster than the first book and there were a few unexpected twists which w ...more

All three books offer a wonderful story to young adults and young at heart. Tristan has to grow up in a hurry as his father is killed and his kingdom under siege. He does receive help but it comes from a group of people he never considered before. The kingdoms are being torn apart from lack of food and water and a new enemy comes to convert the masses to Mythos away from the Allfather. Magic is afoot and what side will each kingdom choose. But Mythos allegiance comes with a price. The series is ...more

“Will she sell her soul to save her people?”

I really loved A Coronation of Kings, the first book of Samuel Stokes’ A Kingdom Divided series. Now he’s back with When The Gods War and it’s as fantastic as its predecessor but set in a different part of the world created by the author and focused on different characters and events for at least half of the book before those from book 1 finally make an appearance.

Court intrigues, betrayals, action, adventure, thrills, magic, battles, competing societ

I was confused to p.126 when the characters from book one show up. The descriptions of the the other kingdoms was to long for me. There is a section in the book where Empress Yaneera explains the neighboring Kingdoms to Disciple Jonas. The author could have used this section with a little expansion instead of all the chapters in the beginning of the story. Other than that it is a good war story. We will see what happens in book 3.

An exciting sequel that wove both books and characters together. I enjoyed how everything connected and how we’re beginning to see the bigger picture.
I didn’t care for the main character of this story as much as the other characters. The story wasn’t so much about her as it was about the gods and the different nations.
I loved seeing the previous characters from the first book in this one as well.
I look forward to reading the thrilling conclusion!

My second read from author Samuel Stokes will not be my last! Breakneck pace, intricately & tightly woven story line. A must read for fantasy lovers! I look forward to the next book, and yes there has to be a next book!

This book started way slower than the first one. The known characters are not included in the storyline until halfway through and only then, it starts to make sense.

I did find the beginning a little difficult to get my head round but it was necessary to bring all the characters in play. You can easily become one with the characters and immerse yourself in the story. I totally enjoyed this and can't wait for the next.Sam is definitely one of my favourite fantasy authors. ...more

The second book in the Chronicles of Meldinar.
Not suitable for children or young adults.
A more epic fantasy story that the first book in the series! Think Raymond E Feist's Riftwar saga.
The brother from the main story are reunited and with their mother and ready to put the kingdom back together. However it doesn't get to last for long.
We get to hear more of the back story and visit a different world in this story. I really enjoyed how original this story has turned out to be and it is really wel
