Every animal can talk to you. You just have to know how to listen.

Pepper Neely is better at this than most, especially because she is in charge of pet sitting all the familiars in her neighborhood. A familiar is a pet magically linked to a witch or warlock. As a gnome, Pepper is no stranger to spells and sorcery. She also knows that, despite their special name, familiars a

I adored this book and found it so much fun to read. Pepper is a gnome living in a town in New York populated by supernatural beings. Even though gnomes and witches aren't supposed to get close, her best friend, Luna, is a witch in training and a perfect companion for Pepper. To earn extra money, Pepper uses her special connection to animals to pet sit the familiars of many neighborhood family. However, one day, someone starts stealing the familiars' powers thus breaking their magical link with ...more

Pepper Neely is not your typical thirteen-year-old girl. She’s a gnome who, in her spare time, pet sits for all the familiars (magical pets for witches/warlocks) in her town. She can communicate with animals and takes care of these pets when their owners are away. It’s only when she gets a phone call from a frantic warlock that Pepper realizes someone is stealing local familiars’ magic. Now, with the help of Pepper’s best friend and witch, Luna, and her brother Jax, Pepper tries to figure out wh ...more

Pepper Neely is a very special pet sitter because not only is she a little different in and of her own self—she’s a gnome—but the animals she’s responsible for are rather unusual, too. Most are witch’s familiars, and they’re magic. Now someone is trying to mess with them, and thirteen-year-old Pepper is on the case. This is a fun book with no rough edges for parents to worry about. The action is sweet but with many exciting twists and turns that show Pepper’s sterling qualities—and the gnome fam ...more

Pepper Neely is a thirteen-year old gnome who, in order to make some extra money, spends part of her free time pet sitting familiars. She is also a special gnome since, despite the fact that gnomes and witches do not usually mix, her best friend is a young witch. One day several familiars start losing their magic, and only Pepper, who has a strong connection to them, will be able to help, but also putting herself in great danger.

This book is intended for young readers, even though I still enjoye
This was a very enjoyable children’s book. Pepper is a great character. I love that she’s a gnome. It means that she doesn’t have magic herself other than her ability to calm and sometimes communicate with animals. Her family has friends all along the spectrum of characters: witches, warlock, werewolves, other gnomes, etc. She’s also not your typical tall, athletic heroine. She’s short, stout, and doesn’t fret over her looks. That’s my kind of hero!

There’s plenty of animals in this story as well

To be anything supernatural would be exciting, terrifying, and completely new! If you were born with it, it may not feel like such an incredible thing...but what if someone was taking it away? Would you reevaluate what you've been given? Would you want it gone? Most importantly, when someone tells you not to go searching out trouble on your own—would you listen? Pepper and Luna are the best of friends, a gnome and a witch—a friendship that is frowned upon by both communities. Can both girls figu ...more

No one ever thinks of gnomes!

As she learns more about herself, her family, and the mysteries surrounding her people, she faces an evil that threatens her family, friends, and her life. Together with her brother, Jax, and her best friend, Luna, they take brave an adversary and mysteries they never thought possible.

Witches *Make* Magic and Gnomes *Are* Magic

Clearly aimed at a middle school audience, nonetheless this paranormal tale held my interest throughout. The narrator, Barbara Goldie, has an incredible range as she does high pitched young girls down to the deeper tones of adult males. It seems that gnomes and witches generally do not mix because witches *make* magic and gnomes *are* magic. Our gnome heroine Pepper and her witch friend Luna have, however, struck up a very close friendship and work tog

A little too much stuffed into too few chapters

I loved this book gnomes aren't garden decorating items think more like dwarves of snow white they are Earth people. Pepper is a gnome who is magic, her friend Luna is a witch that practices magic and Pepper babysits familiars or witch's magical animals, and other magical or supernatural creatures. One problem familiars are losing their magic and so are the witch's and warlocks owned by them. Who is it how will they stop this and why can Pepper help

Enjoyed much. Good character idea and development. Pre-adolescent diction good but bled into the narration. May be to "relate" to audience but was distracting. Generally well paced but battle scene with wolves was weak. Good suspense and auxiliary characters. Used "ancestor," for "descendants," which was confusing. Also read the sequel, The Curse, and will look for book three. This is not Ocean at the End of the Lane but it is near Ella Enchanted.
Have some problem with pre-adolescent with this

This story is about a young gnome named Pepper who pet sits for wizard's familiars (magical pets). This is a mystery and adventure perfect for the whole family. I listened with my 10 and 14 year old boys and we really enjoyed it. Although, I would say it's geared towards elementary age kids, really it's great for anyone who likes fantasy, mystery, adventure and books like The Familiars, Harry Potter and Chronicles of Narnia. The narrator did a great and was fun to listen to.

This book is so cute! You wave witches and gnomes and familiars galore in this book and the action is almost non stop. This book is great for YA and adults as well!

"Similar to The Golden Compass ..."
I liked the gnomes and witches. The world building is immaculate. It was a definite solid 4 stars until ...
... My young son (almost 20) surprised me with a visit. He silently crept into my home while I was in my home office, listening to this, working on my laptop. He startled me by either A) suddenly speaking or B) saying, "That sounds like The Golden Compass, except it's about familiars and not daemons, and it sounds less religious."
And so I reali

Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader :)

The Supernatural Petsitter was really cute, I read it practically in one sitting. Despite being a Middle Grade book, I enjoyed myself immensely with Pepper and her adventure to look for the magic thief. It gave me the breath of fresh air I

I don't see many books about gnomes, and even rarer still to see them as good POV characters. Plus, pet sitting and there's a wolf on the cover - How could I resist?
Pepper Neely is a gnome, which are quite different than most tales have you believe. I loved finding out about it all, their abilities and their relationships with the other paranormal species. I have a theory about the witches and gnomes past history, that I'm very curious to see what happens next.
