The magnificent Kelpies who haunt the waters, shape-shifting from horse to human, are disappearing into legend. Their numbers are dwindling, and they must take a human sacrifice twice a year to survive. So when Rez, a Kelpie stallion and former navy officer, spots a desperate man about to offer himself to the waves, Rez marks him for sacrifice.

Benjamin has had enough of this cruel, cruel world. Blind and battered and suffering from PTSD after returning from service in the military, he visits the beach where he and his now dead best friend Rez shared many good times. He intends to drown himself but before he can do that he hears horse hooves and then, strangely enough, he hears Rez’s voice.

Rez is not only alive but he claims he is a kelpie arisen from the sea and must take a human sacrifice to appease and keep the bloodthirst of his ba

I read this as part of the Primal Need Anthology, and all I can say is that I need more of this book. I don't know if it was the unconventional type of shifter (kelpie, whoa!) or the superb character building, but this book was exactly what I wished the rest of the anthology was. Despite this being a really short story, there was so much love and friendship between the MC's that it wasn't hard to make the jump to lovers.

And this one was so hot I almost had to pull out a fan. It had some pretty g

This was an interesting read. I'm not quite what I think of it really. I liked it, but there's something missing. I liked reading about an atypical creature. The kelpie angle was fresh and different. I would've like more of that aspect though. We don't really learn or see very much about them. There's a lot of tell, not much show. I would've like more interaction with the other Kelpies and their society, a

Dang I hate it when I lose my review. I loved this book and the world building with the Kelpies. I have never read about thes typ of shifters before. I loved watching these two best friends grow to be lovers. I don't think they are quite to the I love love you stage yet but it's there. I would love to read more from this world and see kelj find his mate.

I also can't wait for this author to write more stores so that I can read them.

K.L. White I need more books from you now!

Dark Water was a surprise; mostly because I read it as part of an anthology that, for the most part, was a let down.

With great characters, compelling world building and beautiful writing it was a winner.

I only wish it was longer because I want more of this world that Whit

WOW! This is such a masterful tale, strongly written, and enthralling. The conflicts White presents in this book are agonizing and keep the reader turning pages.
The ideas behind Dark Water intrigued me. I enjoy shifter romances and found the idea of a kelpie hero and world very different. Unfortunately there were too many elements in this short story that left me wanting.

I’m always hesitant about the gay-for-you trope and here it didn’t work for me up until the end. The move from friends to lovers felt like a convenient plot point rather than fueled by an undeniable connection and chemistry. While there’s an attraction that both heroes acknowledge, I di

This was an interesting concept for a story. When Rez realizes he has marked Benjamin and not just some random man he knows he will do anything to protect Benjamin. Benjamin is ready to give up on life and getting his best friend back isn’t enough for him to see that things will get better.

This story was good but left me wishing there would have been a bit more depth. Rez kept so much from Benjamin and they didn’t really talk about anything t

I liked the idea for this story, and I loved the kelpie element. But, the story suffered from its short length where lots of things weren't explained and/or explored further, and it's really a pity that the alpha-on-alpha + GFY romance was rushed. I think it'd be great if the author expands this story into a novel, plus some future stories about their mated life.

Unusual premise, believable characters, some gritty scenes and great writing! KL White writes prose like poetry. If you're a fan of the male/male shapeshifter genre (or want to become one), you should definitely dip into Dark Water.

Dark Water, by K. L. White, centers around Benjamin [ a Navy diver who was injured during a mission and lost his eyesight] and Rev [a kelpie stallion on a mission to collect a human sacrifice]. I first wanted to read this book because Ben was blind. I have been trying to increase my range of books with character who have disabilities. I felt that Ben's character was written well and I appreciat

First, I really liked the writing here. Not even getting into the story in terms of plot, characters, etc., but the way White puts words together makes for a very enjoyable read.

Now let's get into the story. Rez is a kelpie stallion looking for his band's twice-annual human sacrifice, and he accidentally picks out his best friend, Benjamin. Benjamin thinks Rez is de
“Dark Water” is a paranormal male/male romance from debut author, K.L. White. At 98 pages, the story was an interesting story, but suffered from being too brief.

Benjamin lost his sight in a mission gone wrong. His best friend, Rez, presumably died during the same mission. White reveals that not all things are as they appear. Rez is a kelpie stallion. Kelpie’s must sacrifice mortals due to a magical bond that ensures their survival. Now Rez has accidentally marked his human friend as the next sa
The premise was interesting and I haven't read many stories featuring kelpies. I found it was lacking though. I didn't feel there was enough romance or a period for Benjamin to adjust to the changes he was experiencing. I didn't feel as if I learned a lot about the kelpies or the band or even Rez and Benjamin. There was just no time to get attached to the characters or grow to love them. The development suffered because of the shortness.

The ending was nice. I liked that Rez was willing to make

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review by the MMRG Don't Buy My Love program.

Benjamin is a broken man, a former sailor and diver, ready to die since he can no longer see, unwilling to be reduced to useless in his own estimation. He walks out of the naval hospital and has a cab take him to the beach, to drown in the ocean like his best friend who died on their last mission. What Benjamin doesn't know is that Rez is not dead, but has been healed by his people, kelpie

In fairness this is my sister's book so make your own judgments but I think she did a good job constructing a supernatural story that is a quick read and meets the expectations of the genre.

My Review:
ooh, this one was great. I love a tough, vulnerable military hero and this one featured two of them.

In this book, Benjamin is suicidal. He's lost everything...he lost his sight and the last thing he ever saw was his best friend, Rez, dying. His father is senile and hospitalized and Benjamin is virtually alone...dealing with this new horrible disability and PTSD with no one to help support him. He can't envision a future where he wants to live so he decides to end it all...the same pl

I read this story as part of the Primal Need anthology and I loved it; it was definitely the best story of the three.

I've never read a shifter story about Kelpies before and it was really interesting. It was also heartbreaking in places and very HOT.

I'm a sucker for stories about veterans and this one tore me up in all the best ways. I found the writing compelling and I didn't put it down until I finished the whole story. I think it takes an extremely talented writer to construct a story with a

The idea was nice, the execution was really bad. I skipped a lot of pages which is not a good sign with such a short story. It was just all too unbelievable and everything was resolved too neatly. 'Oh I thought you were dead but here you are and now you tell me you are a kelpie. Ah well, fine I guess this explanation will do'.

Wow! While this isn't a long story, the emotional impact hits as if it were a much larger tale. I was surprised to be so quickly drawn into the love brewing between these two alpha males. Benjamin had enough to deal with in his sudden blindness and the loss of several fellow soldiers, including his best friend. He can't even manage to commit suicide properly, and everything he knew about the world is violently upended by the appearance of a Kelpie intent on saving him, even though he's been mark ...more
