Dr. Charles F. Stanley is the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta, founder of In Touch Ministries, and a New York Times best-selling author who has written more than fifty books, and has sold more than nine million copies. He demonstrates a keen awareness of people's needs and provides Christ-centered, biblically-based principles for everyday life.

Charles Frazier Stanley was born September 25, 1932, in the small town of Dry Fork, Virginia. The only child of Charley and Rebecca Stanley, Charles came into the world during a time when the entire nation felt the grip of the Great Depression. To make matters worse, just nine months later, his father Charley died at the young age of 29.

However, Charles refused to let the Great Depression or the difficulties of his life define him. Instead, like his father and grandfather before him, he clung to God’s Word and took up the mantle to preach the gospel to whoever would listen.

Dr. Stanley’s motivation is best represented by the truth found in Acts 20:24, “Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God's mighty kindness and love.” This is because, as he says, “It is the Word of God and the work of God that changes people’s lives.”

Yes, I truly feel this book is amazing. I just finished reading it for at least the third time. My four children are all grown up and I have seven grandchildren with the eighth about to arrive within a week or so. I love how Charles Stanley made the chapters into an easy one day read with each chapter chalk full of good advice for parents, grandparents and couples. I would recommend this book for everyone from teenagers and up, to be read over and over again, as what might have seemed irrelevant the first read might be exactly what you are looking for during the second or third read. The book offers lots of helpful information for young couples looking to start a family someday, as well as for grandparents helping with grandchildren, aunts and uncles and even daycare workers and babysitters who are looking after children or are guardians of teens.

Thanks Charles F. Stanley - I will read again and also share with our grown children to help them with their parenting.

I enjoy reading a Charles Stanley book. This one deals with raising your kids so that they end up being people you are proud of. I have a 20 year old son and a 16 year old daughter. I really wish I had read this book years ago. I can still apply many of the principles set out in the book in dealing with my kids but other areas aren't as applicable now as they would have been years ago.

I found his last chapter on the roles of the man and wife in the family as very interesting. A wife is to submit to her husband and a husband is to sacrifically love his wife as Christ loved the church. If those roles aren't followed Stanley says this may lead to homosexuality. I don't necessarily disagree but I am pretty sure this view faces a whole lot more resistence in today's society then it did back in the 1980's when the book was written. That I think is very sad.

I have read this book 3x and each time God reveals another wonderful nugget to me :)

Dr. Stanley focuses on our parental role as one of stewardship vs. ownership. As parents, we have a stewardship entrusted to us, and we are responsible to God for our actions toward our children.

The most important thing that Dr. Stanley conveys over and over again is how we are to ingrain a sense of personal accountability to God into the minds of our children at an early age. By doing so, God will enable us to raise confident, self-controlled kids who will hold fast to the values of God!!

From my personal library: An old book that probably held more value when it was published back in the 80's. I never followed Stanley's personal life that closely though I certainly knew who he was and saw his church services on television a few times over the years. It has a few timeless treasures in it like: "The good or excellent provider is one who builds into children a sense of belonging, a sense of worthiness, and a sense of confidence." After each chapter of principle discussed there are application steps to take that look reasonable as I read them again.
