A very near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. First edition. Cloth. 4to. 255 pp. Illus. with b/w and color photos. Published to accompany the exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, November 1974 - July 1975, with 259 photos by 86 photographers. A wonderful collection.
A good selection of roughly 250 photographs follows a brief introduction by Minor White and a broad history of photography in America. The book was published in 1974, and it is instructive to read now, as it neglects the major American photographers (Eggleston, Winogrand, Friedlander, Myerowitz, etc.) who achieved prominence in the 1970s and would be central to a history of American photography written today. It would be like writing a history of American cinema and not including Scorsese, Coppola, and Spielberg.
