A somewhat old-fashioned sf novel – it wouldn’t have looked out of place among British sf of the 1970s; and I hold British sf of the 1970s in high regard – and well-written, but with a mostly unlikable narrator. It’s set in a sort of future galactic human co-prosperity sphere, in which primitive worlds are exploited for raw resources. This is a science fiction novel set, initially, on a chilly human-colonised world gradually being ravaged by mining. The protagonist and his lover encounter a lone follower of an old cult that revered the land. Losing in love, our hero finds himself drawn into that same sensibility, and his now lonely life turns towards fighting the destruction of the natural environment, right across the galaxy.
