why read the unfinished ramblings of a drunken, esoteric, catholic, anarchist? Because he is one of the most overlooked Brilliant modernist of his generation. This is why.

For the enthusiast, this is a really valuable collection of ML's unfinished writings: includes his letters, the poems (not ML's strength in my opinion),and the short stories and fragments of novels. The recent article about Lowry's semi-mysterious death turned me on to the author. None of the bookstores had Under the Volcano, so I got this instead. Some of the poems are pretty damn good and the stories are really good at times. The preface asserted that great novelists are really the creators of great sentences (or something like that) - for great sentences, Lowry definitely kicks ass.
