An unusual Great War memoir in that the author was a cook for most of the war. Serving with the famous 1st London Scottish Bttn he had an interesting perspective on most of the major battles. The book was written late in his life, based on his diaries from the time and there are some good anecdotes but perhaps suffers from the passage of time. It also perhaps relies too much on where he was rather than things which would have been interesting to know but which might have seemed routine to him. Eg what was the food like, how was it prepared, how much did they get, how were they organised what was relations like between the troops immediately behind the lines and the fighting troops. Never the less worth a read and original copies can be found cheaply.

Another fascinating Great War account from a Private in the London Scottish. Well written account.

Waste of time. While the author was an infantryman for the first year of the war, he spent the rest of it as a company cook. Made for very dull and repititious reading: "and then we made tea...."
Don't bother with this one.

Very interesting, although once he became a cook, I was less into it.
