An MFA program in creative writing took Jones to the inauspicious location of Fargo, ND, but joining a roller derby team kept her sane. Her energetic memoir weaves together roller-derby practice with waking up to her sexual identity and drinking problem. The book shrewdly uses the lingo and format of a roller-derby bout to provide its structure. The memoir’s short, titled chapters function almost like mini-essays. I don't read many memoirs, but I met Sammi Jones at an author presentation at the Austin ArtWorks Festival in Austin, MN and was impressed with her poise, speaking ability, and the topic of her book.

I remember watching Roller Derby on TV in the '60s and '70s, but learned from her that it's not the same sport anymore. Back then, it was resembled All-Star Wrestling--more entertainment than sport.
