4.5 stars actually.

This book is one of the more unique books I've read in a while. I do sort of a check list for each part of a book that's a deal breaker or a deal closer so I'll kind of wing it in my own format.

1. The main character, strong or not?
Claire is one of very few main characters that didn't make me want to pray that they'll find a backbone. I can't tell you how many times authors have promised me a strong heroine and have given me a whiny twit. Nor can I count the times when the

Dark Hope by HD Smith is an amazing urban fantasy. The main character, Claire, is the Devils personal assistant, but she quickly becomes wrapped up in the politics of the non-human world around her. Sent on a quest to save her life, she encounters troubles in the form of magic, beings that hate her, and mysteries. This quest takes her all over the human and non-human world as she not only has to try to save

It was so good!!! Even after the end I still don't know everything that's going on, but it's still really good! It was so twisty and I got emotionally involved with the characters. Also this doing this "Best of 2014" thing in December is some bullsh*t. It makes me all paranoid and crazy. I start to *agonize* over "oh noes what happens if I read a better book?!?" "Okay, only read books that are crappy." "That's the solution." No, that is NOT THE SOLUTION!!! THAT IS BULLSH*T!!!!!! Next year, Jan ...more
Let's face it, most of us think our boss is the devil sometimes, Claire's problem is that her boss is indeed the demon king himself. She's been bound to him for the last five years due to a deal her deceased mother made with him before Claire was even born.

Now she is the heartless bastard's assistant, running errands in the underworld; dodging oversexed pagans, murderous druids, and Lucifer's vengeful and/or surprisingly amorous demon spawn. Her only consolation is her loving boyfriend, Jack,

Dark Hope was amazing to the last word. I didnt want it to end and I simply couldnt put it down. I was instantly sucked into the world HD Smith created and became so invested in Claire that I had to keep reading.

Claire is both smart and strong but she has been dealt a raw deal. I love the way she kept her head and solved problems, learning to use her emerging powers. I felt her hurt and betrayal; my heart ached for her each time she learned a new truth. The action never stops or slows. I think

I don't read much fantasy so I'm new to the urban fantasy genre. But this was a good introduction for me by new author HD Smith. I enjoyed the world (realms)created by Smith, and especially the main character of Claire. Claire is a strong protagonist placed in several perilous situations in this book. I enjoyed her humor, interactions with other characters, and the way she was slowly learning her true powers as the novel progressed. I look forward to rest of series to see what Claire decides to ...more

Loved it - I cared about Claire and wanted her to succeed - getting me to care about a character is not easy - especially for a new author - I will look for her next book - I want to know more!

My Thoughts:

I was approached a few weeks ago by the author about reviewing her first full length novel, Dark Hope. After reading the synopsis I was intrigued, but confused. I took a chance and jumped in hoping to clear up the confusion and in the end, ended up even more confused. But in the good way that time! Regardless of what Goodreads (and

What I liked

Dark Hope started out as a kind of light UF story that turned into a complex story that had me wondering where the roller coaster was going to stop. I liked the fact that I couldn't easily figure the plot out by chapter 5 like other books I've read. Dark Hope is an audio you need to listen carefully to because you can find yourself lost if you check out from time to time. A lot of plot twists
Dark Hope is a unique read. Our protagonist Claire is employed as the Devil/Summer Kings assistant. This isnt exactly a job you can just quit; that could land you in hell. The Boss is prickly, impatient and will not provide Dental, and hes serious about no Dental! Claire is pretty sure the Boss actually hates her but so far she manages to keep her job and her soul in one piece. That is until someone decides to interfere with Claires life.

This urban fantasy is gritty. Frankly Claires life kinda

Claire had not asked to be serving her life as the Devil's assistant, but in order to repay her mothers debt that is exactly what she is doing. She is branded and her boss, the Devil, is as harsh as you would assume. Five years into her job, Claire knows that she can't go to her boss unless he requests it. The problem is one of his children is murdered and Claire is looking like the culprit.

Claire begins a journey trying to solve the murder only to find she is not the fragile human she always

Really enjoyed this. It's clever, unusual, complex and builds well. Importantly for me at the moment, the protagonist wasn't annoying, dumb or whiny.

I just really wish that the author would learn the difference between exacerbated and exasperated (or whatever word it is they actually want) e.g.. "She said in an exacerbated tone"...... "Harry blew out an exacerbated sigh" --It's repeated several times, is never used correctly and is very jarring in the audio version where it's obvious the

H.D. Smith is a new to me author, and Im glad I was introduced to her latest release, Dark Hope through a blog tour. The synopsis alone caught my attention, and the fact its Urban Fantasy is why I wanted to read it.

This book is like no other story Ive read before, and I love when authors can create something that takes me on a wild ride Ive never been before. Here we have the main character, Claire who is the Devils assistant. She has his mark due to her

I received this book as a gift from the author.

Clair is the devil's assistant. She deals with demons, pagans and humans. When she goes to get something for her boss, her whole life turns topsy turvy. She is told that she is going to be the one that changes things. A trip down to Purgatory unlocks some special gifts that had been hidden, but opened up a whole other can of worms.

H.D. Smith definitely keeps the reader on their toes. The way she left the ending with some unanswered questions, I hope

Dark Hope was awesome and I'm sad it's done. Being inside Claire's head, the author did the most amazing job of having the reader truly experience everything right through Claire's eyes. I loved every twist and turn. Even when I thought I knew the direction the novel was headed, HD Smith took a zigzag and surprised me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy/paranormal. Dark Hope

This book was a nonstop adventure! Had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire story. At times, I confess I was a bit confused with all the different names, but that was a small blip for this epic story.

Original and action packed, I highly recommend this book! Can't wait to see more from H.D. Smith.

A fascinating and unique who-done-it dark urban fantasy!

Id like to say it could have been worse. Im sure lots of people hate their job, or their boss, or the people they work with. I just couldnt relate to those people. They have options. They can quit their job, move out of town, or drop off the grid. The only option I had was a guaranteed one-way ticket to Hell when I died, and that didnt include dental.

H.D. Smiths The Devils Assistant dark urban fantasy series is one that Ive wanted to delve

Kept me up at night guessing how she was tied to characters. Awesome way to tie it up and leave us wanting more
Wow! I've been looking forward to starting this series for so long! Now that the final book is out, I've dived in... and what a story! I'm so glad I already have the next book as I must find out what happens next! There's no romance in this installment... but, maybe later? We'll see...

I downloaded Dark Hope as a free book from Amazon. Due to the complexity of this story line, Dark Hope could have easily turned into a hot mess, but Smith did a great job pulling the threads together. There were a few plot holes (and weird coincidences), but they were small enough to overlook in this fast-paced tale. Many of the reveals would have had more impact if they hadn't been explained in the blurb. The concept was great- but in some cases, it seemed as if the author was trying to cram ...more

I was intrigued by the excerpt in this book, but honestly its a hit or miss with authors and you never know till you actually start reading which that author is going to be. Let me just say WOW! HD Smith has seriously hit the mark with this book. I've been reading since 4pm and its 12am now. Granted I had to feed my kid and all that fun stuff as a parent but I didn't take too many breaks.

This book had action from the very beginning and it kept the action going the entire book. I literally could

DARK HOPE is a good read, it's a great series introduction even if I have qualms about the characters. It's strength lie on the myth and world-building. There's time travelling which explains my Back To The Future reference. There's also powerful magic involved so some of the places Claire went to felt like Alice's Rabbit Hole, odd and enchanted. Then there's the Christian flavor with Hell, Purgatory, Angels & Demons. I loved the world Smith created and with Mab as the

“I eyed the sheriff. “So I better be breathing when He finds me.” “Who the hell are you talking about?” the sheriff blurted.
I chuckled.
The postman sneered at the sheriff. “She means the Demon King. The Devil. This is a phone from Hell—the real one.”
“With his nose in my hair, he inhaled deeply before putting a light kiss on my cheek. “Have you come to play?” he asked then kissed me again.
“No.” I cringed when he drew my earlobe into his mouth. “I came to help you. That’s all. I swear.”
“I’d rather play.”
