Christ-Centered Exposition

Exalting Jesus in John

Rate this book
Exalting Jesus in John is part of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series. Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ-centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books.

Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition presented as sermons and divided into chapters that conclude with a “Reflect & Discuss” section, making this series ideal for small group study, personal devotion, and even sermon preparation. It’s not academic but rather presents an easy reading, practical and friendly commentary.

The author of Exalting Jesus in John is Matt Carter and Josh Wredberg.

“The balance of biblical accuracy, clear outlines, captivating illustrations, and life-changing applications make this commentary a must-have addition to the library of every pastor and everyone else who wants to understand and apply the Gospel of John.”
Stephen Davey, Th.M., D.D., senior pastor, Colonial Baptist Church, Cary, North Carolina; president, Shepherds Theological Seminary, Cary, North Carolina

“Matt and Joshua provide an excellent resource on John's Gospel. With a clear outline of content, a concise purpose for writing, and a faithful handling of the text as it points to Jesus, the authors give the reader a valuable resource for study and preaching. They herald a clear message to remind the reader, ‘The gospel is the good news that you no longer have to wander about in the darkness and despair of sin, but you can enjoy the light of righteousness through Jesus Christ’ (p. 27). I commend this commentary as it will prove beneficial for many, for years to come.”
Lane Harrison, D.Min., lead pastor, LifePoint Church, Ozark, Missouri

“The Gospel of John has no shortage of commentaries, raising the obvious what sets this one apart from all the others? The unique contribution of Matt Carter's work is rooted in his personal profile. Carter is both a highly successful church planter and long-tenured pastor who has built and led a large church through text-driven preaching. A church holding forth the truth in the heart of one of the most socially liberal cities in the country. A church that has multiplied itself many times over through planting new churches in their own city and in some of the most difficult countries on the planet. As a trustworthy, twenty-first-century pastor-theologian, Carter has not only produced a commentary, but a sermon and bible study starter for preachers and teachers seeking to accurately interpret and prophetically apply the Word of God to this radically changing culture.”
Nathan Lino, senior pastor, Northeast Houston Baptist Church; president, Southern Baptists of Texas Convention

“This commentary on John is incredibly practical. Written from a pastor's heart, it provides both deep theological insight and practical application. Both ministers of the gospel and people in the pew need this work!”
Jerry McCorkle, executive director, SpreadTruth Ministries, Bloomington, Illinois

“As a pastor for more than twenty-one years, I appreciate a commentary that stands on solid scholarship while at the same time fitting comfortably in the pulpit. Any pastor, teacher, or small group leader will be able to open this book and find a Christ-centered resource at their fingertips which will enhance their preaching or teaching ministry. In fact, any believer reading this Christ-centered exposition will find themselves learning more about the Lord Jesus Christ and His place in Scripture. The Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series seeks to exalt Jesus. This volume succeeds in meeting that goal!”
Eric Peacock, D.Min., senior pastor, Westchester Baptist Church, High Point, North Carolina

“As the church navigates an age of profound confusion and doubt, the Gospel of John serves as an immoveable anchor. This commentary is an invaluable tool for believers in understanding and applying God’s Word to our lives as we combat the litany of competing worldviews that surround us. This work remains faithful to the timeless truth of Scripture while challenging contemporary issues in a thoughtful manner. Believers will be well-served by using this book to supplement their efforts to delight in God’s Word and to live by faith in Jesus, the Savior of the world.”
Kevin Peck, lead pastor, The Austin Stone Community Church, Austin, Texas

“John said the purpose of his Gospel was ‘so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name’ (20:31). This volume is a literary GPS in helping us arriv...

I’ve spent about 6 weeks studying the Gospel of John. It was a delight! I took my time and went down many “rabbit holes.”

I have a nice little library of these Christ-Centered Exposition series. They are easy to understand, verse by verse commentaries. They have questions at the end of each chapter. I tried many commentaries over the years but this is my go to.

Used as supplement to church bible study. Filled with good background and each chapter had really good questions to consider at the end. Was more of general knowledge vs walking through verse by verse. Could probably be done as a Bible Study itself. Would definitely recommend to anyone studying John!

A good commentary can be an invaluable aid to pastors, students, professors, and Christians in general. But not every commentary is equally suited for every task. Some excel in giving background information, others focus on the technical details of text criticism or the original languages, and others are more application-focused. Choosing the right type of commentary for the right task is a critical first step!

The Christ-Centered Exposition series is edited by David Platt, Daniel Akin, and Tony Merida. They have four goals for this commentary series, which they list in the introduction. 1) They seek to display exegetical accuracy. What the Bible says is what they want to say. 2) This series has pastors in view. It is designed to aid in sermon prep and drawing out the themes and applications from the text, not to be academic in nature. 3) They want the series to be known for helpful illustrations and theologically driven applications. And 4) they want to exalt Jesus from every book in the Bible.

This volume of the commentary series is divided into over fifty sections, some of which cover a few verses (e.g. 14:1-3) and others which cover whole chapters (e.g. chapter 7). Each of these sections contains unit-by-unit analysis of the verses it covers and uses the CSB (Christian Standard Bible) translation. Additionally, the sections are full of example illustrations, introductions, applications, and so on. While it is by no means necessary to go at this pace, each section has enough material to fill an entire sermon (at this pace, you could take over a year to preach through John’s Gospel!).

johnEach chapter of the commentary begins with a “Main Idea” summary that encapsulates the theme or main point of the unit of Scripture. Then comes an outline of the section that will be covered and an exposition of each section of the passage according to the outline. At the very end of each chapter are questions for discussion and reflection.

You might wonder if a volume in this series is necessary for each of the Gospels. “Is it that hard to exalt Jesus and point to him when you are preaching a passage that is explicitly about him?” “Isn’t this sort of series more useful for the Old Testament?” My answer is that a volume like this is CRITICAL. I have sat through too many sermons that begin with a passage from the Gospels but jump off the passage like a diving board into current events, “hilarious” stories, or confusing theological polemics to think that it is impossible to preach from the Gospels and yet miss the point entirely. Volumes like these are powerful examples and reminders of how to keep the main thing the main thing by preaching “Jesus Christ and him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2).

My conclusion for this volume mirrors my thoughts of the previous volume that I reviewed: this commentary specifically and the series in general do exactly what they aim to do and do it well. If you’re looking for a verse-by-verse analysis that goes into great detail about the historical/socio-rhetorical background or parses every single Hebrew word and explains them you won’t find that here. But if you’re looking for a resource to help you teach and preach the Bible more and more Christocentrically, this is the series for you! I recommend this book and series to all pastors and Bible-teachers looking for an accessible yet robust commentary that takes the Bible seriously and makes much of Jesus.

Many of the volumes in this series disappoint, and this volume on John is one of them. Because it is a sermonic commentary, it offers very little analysis of the text, including background information. Its chapters align with the preaching units chosen by the author. Each chapter opens with a Main Idea. More often than not, I felt these missed the mark of identifying the central idea of the text. Though very readable, it just did not contribute much that I found valuable. There is a reason why these volumes are frequently available for far less than you would pay for other commentaries.

I definitely had a hard time at several points in this commentary agreeing with some of the theology. Overall it was still good and I’m a big fan of the series but this one had plenty of moments that gave me pause and I think picked the wrong thing to emphasize in some critical moments

EXALTING JESUS IN JOHN – A REVIEW

From the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series, Exalting Jesus in John is a fabulous edition! I really enjoy this series of books, and was grateful to have had the edition on James when preaching from James. It was an excellent resource and there was much in there that I am thankful to the saints whom have come before me for putting down in writing.

LIKE MY OWN PRIVATE BIBLE STUDY GROUP

Reading Exalting Jesus in John is as if I am partaking in an in-depth Bible study with other people when it’s really just me reading the book. I could literally almost hear myself having conversations with some of my closest friends regarding passages from all the chapters and sections from John as covered in the book. It’s an incredibly edifying resource.

CONTENTS AND USE

Exalting Jesus in John breaks down the twenty-one chapters of John chapter-by-chapter, pericope-by-pericope. Each section has a main idea followed by a basic outline that goes with the main idea. Everything is done in an easy-to-understand way that isn’t overly wordy or complicated. For example, for the section on John 3:31-36Open in Logos Bible Software (if available), the main idea is, “John provides his disciples three reasons to follow Jesus as the Christ.” The following outline are the three reasons with the respective verses from this passage. Simple, understandable, yet dead on. Where many commentaries are very technical and wordy, this is concise and to the point.

When reading through the commentary, like most commentaries, you don’t have to read cover-to-cover. You can skip and jump around, which is beneficial because those using it, whether it being in pastoral ministry or academic research, often don’t have the time to read through an entire book.

IN CONCLUSION…

Exalting Jesus in John, as is true of all of the Christ-Centered Exposition commentaries I’ve seen, is made in such a way that one doesn’t need to be a theologian or pastor to understand and utilize it. This strength is what makes this commentary volume such an incredible resource. As I need them, I plan on collecting as many of the volumes of the Christ-Centered Exposition series as I can. And I am very glad that I was able to receive Exalting Jesus in John.

If you're like most Christians you want to increase your understanding of God's word. You do this by attending church and maybe a Bible study or two, you might even lead one!
I've done all of that too. I've even read myriads of books, those found on the "self-help" shelf at Christian bookstores. But I still found myself wanting something more. A deeper understanding of how the Bible fits together as a whole. I've wanted to know why "that verse is there" because to my small mind it didn't seem to contextually fit. What could I do? Where could I go to find the answers?

Commentaries.

I know! I thought they were all stuffy and boring, books only to be read by boring, intellectual scholars, or on nights I would wrestle with insomnia. Definitely not something to get excited about.

Then I picked up this commentary on the gospel of John. And wow!!

Christ-Centered Exposition, Exalting Jesus in John is part of the Christ-Centered Exposition series that affirms that the Bible is a Christ-Centered book.

I haven't made (and don't plan to) reading commentaries a part of my regular time with Jesus. I would much rather read His Word to me and hear His voice explaining or answering my questions than have man's thoughts on His word. But sometimes He leads to other books for the answers I seek.

Exalting Jesus in John is written much like a Bible study. Each chapter has a passage, a main idea, and questions from the text. The passage is divided into smaller portions and explained further. The end of each chapter has some questions for review and discussion.

You could use this book on your own in your own personal Bible study; reading the passage and then the chapter, in a group Bible study or Sunday school class, or just to supplement what you are already doing. It wouldn't have to be read from cover-to-cover, you could simply find the chapter you have questions about and read the commentary there. The possibilities are endless!

I received a free copy of this book from BH Publishing for the purpose of review. All opinions are my own.

`Exalting Jesus in John` is a Christ-centered exposition of the book of John by authors Matt Carter and Josh Wredberg.

We learn that John echoes the Bible as a whole. Just as God has always existed, so has Jesus. Jesus is not just a god, He is God. When He came to earth He came as fully man and fully God.

Exalting Jesus in John is specially written for pastors and small group study. However, it is also written so that any layperson can study it and understand it. I like that the authors do not merely ask a question and leave the reader hanging, he also answers the question to help the reader understand.

Each section begins with the main idea of the portion of scripture you will be reading about, an outline of the verses, then an overview of those verses, and at the end of the section are questions for review and reflection.

I think other people should read this book so they can more thoroughly understand the book of John and see how Jesus and God are One. The thing I like about the book is how it takes the reader through John explaining what each section means, in a simplified way. This book met my expectations. I recommend it to pastors, small group study, and individuals.

As a lay person and Bible study leader and teacher, I rely on solid commentaries to help exposit the word. I've read several of the books in this series and have always appreciated them for solid exposition and concise explanation and application. However, this book was really disappointing. It felt very topical and truly lacks cohesiveness. If the purpose of John's gospel is so that his readers might believe, surely a commentary on the gospel would recognize that each sign, each discourse and "I AM" claim were to bolster faith in witnesses and hearers. Instead, it seemed that the authors took a topical approach to the passages, and I often found myself wondering how they identified main points of a passage. Truly disappointed.

For an excellent (though meaty) commentary on John, you cannot skip D. A. Carson's "The Gospel According to John."

A thorough diving-in on the gospel of John, presented in digestible chapters that don't go on too long. It's not really a "Bible study," but there are discussion questions presented at the end of every chapter. There are a few points where I disagreed with Carter's conclusions (predestination being a big one) but overall I found him insightful. Will check out other Exalting Jesus in... books and will look at further books from this author.

I'm not sure how to rate a commentary and this is the first one I've read, so I have no basis for comparison. My church was doing a study of John over the course of a school year so I read along with our sermon series.
I'm also not a theologian or biblical scholar either. I learned a lot and was able to put more context around our bible study and I appreciated that. I do plan on using these commentaries in the future.

I appreciate the Christ-Centered Exposition series because it helps me dive deeper into scripture while keeping Jesus at the forefront of my study. Thanks to scripture cross references, historical background, and practical applications, I feel better equipped to give lectures for Bible Study Fellowship after reading this commentary in addition to my own study of the Bible.

A thematic study that can be helpful for preachers. Each chapter takes a section or chapter of John and shares some thoughts with questions at the end.
