Sacrifices of Shadow is a graphic novel in the vein of dark urban fantasy, written by K. Kazul Wolf and illustrated by Matt Edginton. Anya is on her way to visit her mother when she comes upon a strange man lying in the road. It's the middle of the night, pouring rain, and through the headlights it looks like something has just tried to tear this guy to pieces. He asks if ...more

I devoured this. I got a free copy today for review, and read it cover to cover in one setting. It's a quick, tight story with a protagonist who gets caught up in a difficult situation outside of her understanding (complete with demons and hell hounds and such) and rises to the occasion. A lot of fun, and superb writing.

"My sweet, I'm the one who buries the dead."

"Oh?" I grin. "Well, you're not the one holding the shovel, are you?"

Sacrifices of Shadow is a fast-paced UF with a strong noir art style. Wolf does a good job of establishing the characters and their relationship to one another quickly, which is necessary in such a short graphic novel. I quite liked John's gentlemanly attitude, and could understand why Anya would trust him. As I mentioned, the art is also outstanding—dark and atmospheric without being

Man I am such a fan of mixed media stories be they graphic novels or a story with illustrations like this one (the shovel & pistol pics in particular were my faves!) but over all this had such a cool dark feel to both the story and the artwork. I love seeing a writer & illustrator work so well together!

My only complaint is that sadly this wasn't a terribly long read. I definitely would have enjoyed more of Anya's shovel adventures!

A fast read, dark yet fun. Take a deep dive into this beautifully drawn and written world while a storm whips outside your window (or see the storm inside a brightly lit bagel place, which is where I read it, over coffee)! Definitely recommended for fans of graphic novels; a small gem of a book.

Dark and twisty! John and Anya feel real and rugged on the page, and the illustrations add a gritty ambiance to make for a great read!

I normally don't read graphic novels, but heard about this one from a friend, and I'm so glad I took the time to read it! It reminded me of some of my favorite short fiction, with a tight pace, intriguing characters and a well-planned plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. I liked Anya and felt conflicted about her willingness to go along so quickly with John, which was great because I love that kind of tension. I want to feel complex emotions when I read, and I did. I felt satisfied by the e ...more

I really enjoyed this story! The art was top notch, the writing was concise, and it offered a tantalising little glimpse into a fascinating world. Both of the heroes were likeable and down to earth. It's just a shame that it's so short. I was just starting to feel immersed in the setting, and then it was over.

I don't have many criticisms other than the length. The ending felt a little anticlimactic? Most of the story is a buildup to this fight at the end, which then ended quickly.

I do hope you r

K. Kazul Wolf (most commonly referred to as Bacon) is a fantasy author who spends a lot of her time reading too many books, perfecting her leegndrary typo skills, and being a dragon—though in the latter her interests lean more toward rescuing cats and dogs in distress as opposed to princesses and hoards of gold. She is attempting to conquer the world through culinary and pastry arts, and bouts of ...more
