Sex With Lex
Nick Barker was thrilled. A summer working on his college roommate's family ranch was a dream come true for a veterinary student. He didn't anticipate his reaction to his best friend and roommate's father, though. Lex Whitefeather hired his son Sam's best friend for the summer. He figured he'd be generous and help the kid out. I wasn't going to write anything about this book, but since some of you have been curious about why we read this book, I thought I would give my friends an explaination.
Jack and I decided to read a Carol Lynne novel because of a conversation I had with Shawn about the different techniques every writer has. I wanted to read a book of Carol’s because I know many of my friends on here like her and respect her, but on the flip side, there are many of people on here that aren’t as crazy about her writings, too.
Since, Jack and I haven’t ever read a book written by her, and I wanted to prove a point to my BFF, and we decided to give it a shot.
So, we picked Sex with Lex for several reasons. It has mixed reviews, and other than Our Eyre’s fabulous review of it, which I highly recommend reading if you want a better description of the book itself, there really isn’t much said about it. Sex with Lex is also not in a series. (We didn’t want that kind of commitment) Both Jack and I thought the title was funny, and one of the heroes has long hair. (You know me and my hair fetish!!!) ;-P
Sex with Lex is a May/December romance. It has very little conflict or angst in the story, and the dialog is very simple and to the point. There is a lot of sex in this book, and truthfully, it’s not the most realistic portrayal of gay men I’ve ever read. Even after saying this, I do understand why some people are very crazy about Carol Lynne as a writer and are very satisfied reading her books.
The best part of the book for me was the epilogue. (And Lex’s hair) LOL. I enjoyed Lex’s anniversary surprise for Nick. I thought it was pretty cool of him to act out Nick’s fantasy for him.
Sex with Lex would be a good book to read if you just want to escape for a while and read a romance between two people in general. It also has a very happy ending, which many people will enjoy.

Big age gaps between lovers can be problematic, especially when the younger partner is still in college when they first meet. In this story, when twenty-six-year-old Nick falls for forty-four-year-old Lex, his best friend’s father, it is very clear that all they have between them is lust – at least in the beginning – and maybe a kernel of potential for something more. And the fact that Lex is neither out nor willing to consider being open and honest about his sexuality is a huge obstacle. I can see this happening, and in this sense, ‘A Cowboy’s Secret’ is realistic. Building a real relationship on the basis of lust and secrets is no foundation for permanency.
What is really interesting is how the author has the men meet again three years later, both now at a point in their lives where they can consider something more than a tumble in the hay. Not that this makes their search for love easier, but at least it is now possible. There are obstacles galore, more than one misunderstanding gets in their way, and continued hesitancy on Lex’s side makes things difficult – all of which add up to making Nick and Lex finding their way together a real challenge.
If you like May/December romances, if you think separation sometimes really does make the heart grow fonder, and if you’re looking for a read full of passion, a lot of personal pain, change, and growth, and a blissfully happy ending, then you will probably like this novella.

Not a 3 and not a 4. You guessed it... a 3.5.
Don't get me wrong the story was good, but at times it had me frustrated. They fell in love with each other after what one week, maybe two of the three weeks Nick was supposed to stay? But Nick just up and leaves and Lex goes on this unhealthy binge that left Sam so much cause and for a concern over a 3 year period of time. But the initial visit was for Sam to visit his dad who in the interim didn't spend hardly if any time with him. It's pretty sad really. I'm not sure who I'd be pissed with more...
I could sympathize some with Lex remaining in the closet, but I was not so understanding of him remaining there once his own son came out and still Lex remained there. Lex's reasoning for doing so was not that detrimental that it couldn't have been talked over with Sam. After all... Lex was the only parent Sam ever really knew his whole life. I do believe Sam would have made the sacrifice to believe his father over a woman who didn't give a shit for her own son to be in his life.
The whole idea behind the creation of the book was great, but some parts were sketchy that I couldn't understand the reasoning for it. The warrior scene was a beaut and that was sweetness personified.

This is a shortish book with a sweet story and a happy ending. I found the dialogue to be a little stilted in the beginning, but it seemed to smooth out along the way. I liked the premise, but did find the speed with which the two men fell for each other, and the resulting outcome to be quite extreme. Luckily fate, in the form of son Sam manages to resolve the immediate problem of distance, and in turn of acceptance. The epilogue, set a good while later, is a fun way to round off the story.

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.
Lex is living a lie. He loves his son Sam and doesn't want to do anything to rock the boat. Lex is also hiding a truth that he believes will destroy his ranch and his life. When his son, Sam asks if his best friend, Nick can come for the summer to work, Lex doesn't hesitate to agree.
Nick is used to being alone. He grew up in foster care and never had anything of his own, no real home to come home to. When he finds himself on Lazy River Ranch, he's excited, nervous and incredibly attracted to his best friend's father.
This story spans several years and we get to see glimpses on both sides of the timeline. I think that it was developed fairly organically, but it was still frustrating to see the before and only get hints of the in between.
Lex has to find a good place because that's the only way he'll risk his son or Lazy River Ranch. However, he's somewhat lost without Nick. Nick is not necessarily lost, but he won't be allowed to love anyone else because he left his heart at Lazy River Ranch. Watching the two characters figure their stuff out, find that their attraction stays just as strong throughout the years is both sweet and predictable.
Lex and Nick make a great couple and definitely have great chemistry. But ti's the culmination of the story, involving all of the characters, that really makes it great. I do hope that Pete gets his own story too, as I think that he'll be a great addition.

I received a copy to read and review for Wicked Reads
When I was a teenager I loved romance novels with Native Americans in them. This book had one and holy cow.....I was thrown back to my youth and fell in love all over again!!! Nick is going to work on a a buddy's family ranch. Lex is Nick's buddy's dad. Fireworks went off when they saw each other and they never stopped going off either! These two try and fight their feelings but they just can't. HOWEVER, Lex is so deep in the closet it isn't even funny. Nick decides he can't handle hiding and leaves before the summer is over. A random phone call several years later brings Nick and Lex back together and their chemistry hadn't cooled off at all. This story had me rooting for both Nick and Lex and for each of them to fight for what they wanted. My only regret was the book wasn't longer, I wasn't done with them, I wanted more, even though we did get a nice epilogue.

My problem with this was the language. No not the cussing but every other sentence had Lex-the-cowboy saying 'ya' instead of 'you'. I realize he was a cowboy and they talk differently than I but it was VERY distracting to say the least. OK, moving on:
I can't imagine being in love with someone and leaving them for three YEARS! Alright, I can, but waiting that long for someone to tell their son, "I'm gay & in love with your bestie" is a bit much for me. I'm all for adding, 'so like it or lump it, dude'. (Maybe not in those words but I'd say something with the sentiment in mind and I'd give you a Look so you'd know 'I really wanna say that verbatim but you're my son so I'll cut you some slack but do. NOT. push. me.')
I didn't feel this was a tearjerker so much as a frustration, hence the two stars only. The highlighted portions of the book tell me that this is a reread (I remembered most of it) and that the sex was phenomenal. Still is!

Liked this book.
Light read with my beloved age gap and very sympathetic characters.
My only niggle was that there were too many gay guys, it just doesn't seem... very believable. But since that's not a documental, I got over it and just enjoyed the story :)

Book & Author: A Cowboy’s Secret by Carol Lynne
Rating: 2.75 stars
I love cowboy stories. I love the environment, the animals, the location, and of course...the cowboys. They’re the one contemporary story that feels like it takes place in a different world than the one I live every day. I was not fond of this cowboy story.
Overall the story was, I hate to say it, but boring. These two guys fall for each other but because Lex (the native American cowboy) was deep in the closet Nick decided he wouldn’t stay and become more invested in something that would never be. For a shorter story, this part was handled well. It flowed and read easily. It’s the rest that I have an issue with.
Nick comes back at the request of Lex’s son and his ex-best friend, Sam. The resolution after three years apart and untold emotions was too easy, not enough talk, and way too much sex. Novella or not I needed more to believe Nick went from not looking forward to seeing Lex back together with him within a day.
The writing at this point, in my opinion, went downhill around this part. It was cheesy and corny and the flow not as great. Now some people like that kind of writing (cheesy & corny)but it’s just not for me. I loved the characters especially Nick right from the start. Lex took a bit to grow on me but not because he was bad or anything. It was more of a lack of connection due to his own emotions.
Lastly, and MOST importantly, I mentioned earlier that Lex Whitefeather is Native American. He is described as what most know of one to look like; long black straight hair, bronzed skin which is fine. What isn’t fine, as someone who is Native American, is the times like in Chapter 10 that the author wrote that Nick wanted to see Lex in a loincloth, that he was going to buy him one and they were going to play “Indian-catches-the-cowboy game” afterward. Like it was something sexy. Then in Chapter 12 as a surprise for their anniversary, Lex plays this “game” out with him. I’m not easily offended but I was by this. The author gave voice to a terrible set of dialogue and had Lex acting stupid. Like sniffing Nick lower regions like a dog under the guise that Lex didn't know what “it” was. It was corny and I will admit the over the top nature of it all made me laugh. But I was offended by this “game” being turned into a sex act or something sexy at all.
I know this author or publisher probably didn’t mean to offend but as it has been said numerous times if you are writing about a group of people you don’t know about ask someone of that group.

Carol Lynne is definitely the master of MM romance and erotica. I especially liked the character Shorty and his way of looking on the life itself. It is a shame we rarely see him, but his impact on the plot and the protagonists is huge.

Carol Lynne is one of the author's that has me returning to her books to revisit the characters. Lex and Nick have instant lust. Lex being in the closet could doom the relationship.

I'm a sucker for a book with a cowboy so I couldn't pass up reading Carol Lynne's A Cowboy's Secret. This is a story about Lex, a very in the closet cowboy in his 40's. Lex came from a wealthy family, owns a successful ranch, is a very supportive and loving father, and accepts that he will never come out of the closet. When Lex's son wants to bring his best friend home for the summer from college, Lex doesn't hesitate to say yes. Lex isn't expecting the instant attraction he feels when he sees Nick, or the way that attraction continues to grow as the two men work together. Nick may be the same age as Lex's son, but he's lived a more difficult life growing up in foster care and living a solitary life.
I was looking forward to the relationship development between these two men but that's not something that happened on page. The summer of their initial meeting was a short part of the story, and we just got snippets of the attraction, secret relationship, and love. I really thought this was the most important part of the story, it laid the groundwork for what was to come. The story then jumps ahead several years, when Nick has graduated college and is working as a veterinarian, living his solitary life. A phone call from his past has him heading back to the ranch, and this time when Lex and Nick see each other, they're willing to do what's necessary to have a life together.
I liked most of the characters in the book, but I just wanted more of Lex and Nick's story. I wanted to read about their relationship developing and understand why these two men so completely went off the rails for the three years they were apart. I hated the whole storyline of Lex's ex-wife. This may have only been a 94-page novella, but a lot happened in this story! If you enjoy hot cowboys, age gap, and HEA's, then this is a story you'll want to read!

April 7, 2009Why on earth the last three M/M covers by Ellora's Cave are one worst than the other? A Man for Michael by Sedonia Guillone, Finnegan's Promise by Carol Lynne and now Sex With Lex by Carol Lynne. Ellora's is not a little epubs that has no money to buy some decent covers. And I know, you mustn't judge a book by its cover, but guys, if you are uncertain if buy or not a book, would you buy a book with a cover like that of Sex With Lex.
I know Carol Lynne works, and I buy the book. Carol Lynne is young, and her works is not always a constant. But she writes about characters who are deeply in love and put their relationship before all.
Lex is a 44 years old ranch owner wit a 25 years old son. One summer, Sam, his son, brings home his college roommate, Nick. Nick is 26 years old and he is a foster son. He has no family and when he has the chance to live in a real family, he knows he wants to stay there forever. But Lex is not out with his son, and Nick can't live in a lie and so he left. But love is strong and three years later both Lex and Nick have to admit that their feelings are still strong and that they have to find a way to live together.
The story is simple, and a little "all american dream": Lex is a Native American stud with a wealthy ranch who can buy all he wants to Nick. Nick is young but mature, very serious. He is not in search of Lex's richness, he really love his 19 years older lover. Lex's ex wife is a bitch, no one can like, neither her own son, Sam.
As always in Lynne's books, sex is very down and dirty, loud and rough. It's a strange pair, ultra romantic characters with dirty sex... strange but interesting. And the book is also long enough to gives significance to all the story.

The story is simple, and a little "all american dream": Lex is a Native American stud with a wealthy ranch who can buy all he wants to Nick. Nick is young but mature, very serious. He is not in search of Lex's richness, he really love his 19 years older lover. Lex's ex wife is a bitch, no one can like, neither her own son, Sam.
As always in Lynne's books, sex is very down and dirty, loud and rough. It's a strange pair, ultra romantic characters with dirty sex... strange but interesting. And the book is also long enough to gives significance to all the story.

Lex is excited that his son Sam is coming home for the summer from college. He doesn't expect, however, the instant attraction to Sam's friend Nick. Nick is an orphan who has come with Sam to work on the ranch for the summer. As Lex teaches him how to ride, the two fall in love. However, Lex isn't out to his son or his community, and his secrets drive Nick away. Years later, Sam calls Nick with some exciting news that leads to a reunion between Lex and Nick. The two have to overcome the age difference and Lex's worries in order to be together.
Carol Lynne is truly one of those guilty pleasures. If you're a true fan of m/m romance, she may not be the author for you. As more than one person has pointed out, (I think JenB said it first) Lynne tends to write "chicks with dicks." This story was no exception. While I find m/m romance extremely enjoyable and sexy, I get a bit put off when one of the characters carries his lover like a girl. Also, some of the dialogue in this book was just ridiculous. Really, I know it's difficult to vary the language in sex scenes, but using the word "anus" just doesn't appeal at all. I'd much prefer to read almost any of the other euphemisms for that particular orifice. I can handle a hot hole, beautiful rosette, even a tunnel of love, but "anus" just is not sexy.

So I gave it 3 stars. (I'm kinda harsh. Most stuff will get a 3 from me, if it's really good 4, very rarely 5).
First I wanna say that I hate the title of this book. It's been sitting in my library forever, but I just was like...what the hey.
Anyway, this 19yr age gap romance was not bad. I liked Nick and Lex. I loved Shorty. I wish there was more of him! I'm not sure how I feel about Sam and I have nothin' to say about Justin. He was just kinda there. It's not a bad read. I just wish there wasn't as much time jumping and I wish we could have seen some of the key life moments that were only talked about.
I guess because I have a heart of stone (lol) I didn't find this story as sad as some people, but there were some touching moments. Plus I'll read anything by CL even if it's not her best.

Me puse con ella por uno de esos retos de lectura que abundan en la web y está claro que me equivoqué de novela para empezar con este género (pero era gratis en Amazon!!!).
