Throughout the entire series of the Variant Saga, there has been a surprising amount of action for a science fiction story, but if you have been impressed thus far (as have I), then you will find that The Vernal Memory, the final chapter is even more so. The plot has revolved on attempting to make our inhospitable world (because we made it that way due to the Variant gas), inhabitable again.

For the longest time humanity had to live beneath the earth in a cavern terraformed for the remnant. It took a while to clean things up in a huge ecological project, but as always there are those who would resist the changes that would create more equitable living conditions. The questions of ecology and genetic manipulation are explored with a speculative eye, here.

There is a conscious effort made to give a counter-argument that is fairly represented and well thought-out. There is overcrowding, failing infrastructure, and corruption in government. Even better, there's an all-out battle with aliens that want what there is here. There's a lot to love about this series. The story is great, but even more so the characters are wonderful, and believable. The relationships are adorable and realistic. Chaney clearly knows how to right apocalyptic, sci fi, fantasy.

"... and when she had greedily devoured every last word on the page, she wiped a tear of joy for John and Mei's love of each other. Then a deep sadness settled into her heart as she realized she would be left alone again, no longer able to join in the adventure of her new friends in their strange worlds, one on each side of the ancient portal. Not knowing how Terry will fare now that he has left the boundaries of his known lands, she searches her mind for a way to carry on. A thought settles upon her like a comforting blanket and she realizes there is one person who could relieve the distress and fill the gaping hole left in her quiet life. She raises her eyes upwards, holding her empty Kindle in her hands with a wild and hungry look, reckless with misery as she pleads to J.N. Chaney "Please sir, I want some more."
In all seriousness, The Variant Saga series by J.N. Chaney is an escape into a brilliant world full of deep characters and wonderfully imagined scenery. The author has shared his talent for blending a range of personalities together and sending them on challenging adventures requiring them to reach deep into themselves for strength in order to survive. You will be better for having delved into the story.

I liked this book quite a bit, but it wasn't as good as the next to last one, but it was a good book, and I really enjoyed the series as a whole really a lot, it was a really surprisingly good series to me, I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did. it's well written and it keeps the interest up. it really was a worthy closing of a good series :)

An outstanding conclusion to this series! Just wow! The rebellion has made themselves known to our Earthling characters. For me, I found trust and loyalty were major factors in the story in general. Once again I found this to get stronger throughout this story. Throw an intense amount of greed in there and you have the perfect twist to an amazing ending. Terry has set out to help Garden (the rebels) find a weapon to help stop the Leadership in Everlasting. John Finn (Terry's best friend from Earth) is helping Everlasting to locate Garden to bring the rebel leader in. Mei Curie (our other Earth best friend) is working on locating a cure for the Variant air. When all of them end up on different sides of this war the rollercoaster of action and emotion get intense! All of our Earthlings have made special bonds and friendships with natives of Kant. This is a place of the impossible becoming possible. Curiosity and countering traditional thought is what brings this book out on top. The twists and turns in this story are more than enough to justify the late nights spent reading this series. Once again this author has given us another amazing story that makes this series absolutely extraordinary. Bravo!!

I was hoping for a bit more from this last book in this very enjoyable series.   It was still very enjoyable, fast flowing, full of action and everything the first three books were, that's not the problem.   The problem is that throughout the previous books it's felt like we've been thrown a trail of breadcrumbs concerning lots of things, and i started reading this book thinking that that trail would have lead to somewhere.   Sadly, someone seems to have run out of breadcrumbs.

Previously we were told that the Variant came from a hole that was drilled into the ground, which sounded like someone was covering something up.   Like a hole in the ground would have enough gas to destroy a whole planet plus one more when it leaked through a worm hole.   It didn't seem plausible for all this gas that has flooded two whole atmospheres to come from a hole drilled into the ground.   But that's all that's said about it in the whole series -- nothing more.   No further explanation is given.

I was also hoping to have explained to me why the people of Everlasting can't breathe Variant but the rest of the people on the planet can.

Then there's Garden.   Who seem to have been around quite some time before the humans arrived, yet their sole purpose seems to have been to stop Gel from his master plan to invade Earth with genetically modified people from Everlasting -- genetically modified with Earth's help.   So no real explanation as to what has been going on in Everlasting before the humans arrived to have caused the insurrection was given.

And there's other little picky things that just made this feel like a 'quickly wrap the series up and move on and not get too deep about anything' kind of book.

But, as i said at the beginning, it's still an enjoyable read, but i'm just left with the feeling that it could have been so much more.

All in all, a good series, good writing, great characters, fast flowing pace throughout, just slightly lacking at the end.

Finally! Yes, finally we have the conclusion to this astounding series. I won't spoil anything, but I've been on edge (especially after seeing a cover that didn't look very HEA) wondering if Terry would ever make it home, or at least meet up with John and Mei because he's always been so close, but so far away. But enough of that, I'm not going to give anything away, except to say that I was very surprised at how the book ended and it really wasn't what I had been expecting, which of course is the mark of a good writer.

This book is full of action, confusing politics, lies, and danger (of course danger, because danger is everywhere on Kant!). The new enemy they encounter this time is even scarier than the guardians from the previous book! I don't know how Chaney comes up with stuff like this, but it's genius!

I'm excited to see what he has in store next because whatever it is, it will be fantastic!

The city of Everlasting is still reeling from the latest attack at the hands of the rebellion group known as Garden. War is imminent as Garden begins making assassination attempts on the Leadership. In the midst of it all, an unforeseen hand makes its own power play.

Back on earth, Mei and her team are working on a cure. A vaccine against the poisonous gas of the Variant air. Unknown to her, there are some that have sinister plans not only for the vaccine, but also for her.

After Terry was rescued from being experimented on in Everlasting's underground facility by Jinel Din, he and Lena Sol are working with Garden. Reunified with lost friends, they will sail to distant lands in search of the one thing to end this conflict. Unbeknown to them, some have other plans that include stopping them once and for all.

J.N. Chaney's final book in the Variant Saga, THE VERNAL MEMORY, is a non stop thrill ride in which he forgot to include the brakes. Propelled by powerful and heartfelt characters, this final journey takes you deep into a web of deceit and lies. Action paced, filled with suspense, convoluted twists and turns, all leading to an explosive ending. A superb farewell to a fantastic series!

I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an opinion.

The stunning conclusion of The Varient Saga delivers with all the twists and turns you expect from Chaney. Rich characters and world development drives this story. It's unexpected and familiar at the same time which makes you not want to put it down until you finish.

The final installment of the variant saga is completed and oh my wow what an amazing ride! For the last 2 books i’ve been willing the time to come when Terry’s story collides with John and Mei’s and it does so spectacularly here! So much happens in the Vernal Memory that I honestly don’t know where to start. The action is sublime and the pace had my heart racing at times, there are battles which are nothing short of EPIC!

Terry is with Lena at Garden where we left off, although things go rapidly wrong. A chance to take down the Leadership is too good an opportunity to miss but without a real plan things go awry. There is deception and deceit and a twist I didn’t see coming! Hux remains one of my favourite characters and their arrival at Tharosa is glorious, the dynamic between Terry, Ludo and Hux is a joy to read and reminiscent of the camaraderie of the children back in the Amber project. The work on the cure to variant becomes a race against time between those who seek to use it for good and those who have their own agenda to complete. It all comes together in a crescendo of cinematic proportions.

I honestly cannot praise this book enough (if you haven’t guessed), I have enjoyed the series as a whole but this ending has just blown me away. JN Chaney’s ability to write “in the moment” action always amazes me and I feel like I am almost there with the characters as i’m reading. I’m going to miss Terry and the others, after 4 books with them I feel like I want to stay with them forever, but things are left beautifully and I’m glad I spent the time with them.

An amazing series!

As much as it saddens me to read the final installation, the conclusion was done just as well as the rest of the series.. A fitting end, while also feeling like only the beginning.. Thank you for a great ride! I will continue to read whatever else this author writes, it's all been gold so far.

In the conclusion to this series, Terry is with the group of rebels known as Garden, along with Lena Sol, a former analyst of Everlasting. When Jinil learns that Terry's sword is made of one of the only materials that can defeat the sentinels, they go on a mission to secure more of it.
Meanwhile, Mei and her team are working hard to enhance the Lantrix inoculation to make a more permanent cure to Variant. When Mei goes missing, John begins to question everything about Everlasting. As more and more attacks occur, John, Mei, and Terry must continue to fight for survival and decide who they can trust.

I have loved every moment of this series, and this book is no exception. It was a quick read for me, but maybe that's because I was so excited about finding out what happened. Thinking back on the development of the characters and plot, it's amazing to see how far everyone has come. Terry, John, and Mei have gone from isolated children to explorers of not only one world but two.

There were still questions that were unanswered (For example, why were the two worlds so genetically similar? Especially since they are not only different planets but presumably different universes?), but I think every good sci-fi book does that to an extent. The Variant characters seem very strong but also very similar in the way they think and act. I thought the addition of the people of Everlasting at this point in the series was wonderful -- especially Master Gel (we needed a good villain at this point in the series!) I thought Ludo and Ysa were charming, and the other "natives" were wonderful as well. This is such a rich world with so much potential. I do think it was a good place for the series to end, and it allows me to imagine things afterward, although I would have loved to see a reunion between Terry and his family.

A wonderful ending to a wonderful series that I would recommend to anyone interested in dystopian or sci-fi. I look forward to reading more from this author.

2.5 days is all it took for me to devour this final installment of a much loved Verdant Saga. I finished the third book in Dec 2016 and waited for this one to come out. Though I somewhat remembered the ending of the third book, the final book began running and did not let up. You could smell the sweet Variant, feel the waves toss the ship, see the massive explosions and devastation, taste the delectable fruits and meats from the market, and hear the ominous approach of the guardians. I honestly had fear for our three heroes as well as those who have befriended them through the book.

It was an incredible run! Is this really the end of John, Mei and Terry's adventures? Though the ending suggests it is. I see plenty of space where other adventures could be inserted. Sure, one can write a story about growing up, graduating high school and living happily ever after. Just because the ending was a happy one, there's still plenty of space in between graduating and ever after for more adventures. I hope J.N. Chaney sees that with this series. So, with a hopeful heart of the next set of adventures - maybe the Verdant Triad...?

I really struggled with a 3 or a 4 on this one but went with a four due to the series ending.

I will start with the cons -
-Started off slower than the other books
-Seemed like a plot hole when Finn gives a 1 hour mark and then it didn't seem to ever be revisited as we climaxed and ended.
-Terry doesn't seem to get the lip service in the Epilogue that the other characters get. It almost seems like it could be left open for another book that tells of his adventures...

Pros -
-Loved the Epilogue for all the other characters
-Loved the author was okay with some violence that seemed entirely necessary
-Happy that the series finished before it overstayed its welcome.

Over all I really enjoyed the book it just took some time getting into it and then the end fell a little flat for me in regards to Terry. I was really hoping it would take a slightly different direction. Or the Epilogue could have thrust us 200 years in the future....

The conclusion of Variant....

Everlasting' s leadership is under attack by Garden. Are they terrorists or are they actually the good guys? After being rescued from Everlasting by the leader of Garden, Terry thinks they are the good guys while John is currently working for Everlasting as they hunt for Mei. Who has her? Everlasting or Garden - no surprise there if you've been following the story....
Meanwhile Terry and the leader of Garden go after Hux, Luck and Ysa, with Lena in tow since they are on the edge of Everlasting and Hux is from the place that has the metal from which the guardians are made, but the leadership of Everlasting know where they are going and send people including John, to intercept them nice they have the precious metal...
A satisfying conclusion to the Variant Saga

The Vernal Memory
The Variant Saga #4
Dystopian
J. N. Chaney
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a good conclusion to the series. There was plenty of action, betrayal and scientific experiments.

The pacing was great and the world building was well developed. It was interesting to see other parts of the strange new world.

I did predict who the informer was pretty quickly but the reveal was done in an interesting way through the transcripts of audio recordings.

I liked how developed the characters were. Most of them have grown together and become very close friends due to the different situations they've been through.

I do think this series has ended a bit suddenly. There's so much more that could be explored, on Earth and in the alternate universe too.

I highly recommend this series

I ended up staying up until 3:00 AM to finish the 1st book because I just had to know what was going to happen next! I quickly read the next 2 books in the following 2 days. I wish there was a follow up series as I would love to follow the further adventures of Terry, Lenna, Ludo and his family and Hux. I would also live an epilogue that details Terry's reunification with his mother and sister, if that ever happened.

The series us well written with a good story and characters whom the reader gets invested in. There are no sex scenes, or graphic violence, so readers from 10-100 can enjoy!

Betrayal

Mei and her team are working on a way to make it possible for ordinary humans to breathe the Variant. This would also help the residents of Everlasting. Unbeknownst to them the leadership of Everlasting wants more and have already subjected Terry torture to find out the secret of his genome. Ludo, Ysa and Hux want to rescue Terry but they don’t understand how everything that they do can be seen by Everlasting.
This is the final book in the series and pulls together all the strands.
A good series for YA and older.

Fascinating tale

I enjoyed this series more than I had guessed I would. It's a creative story unlike anything I've read before. I never had any desire to visit space, but after reading this series I would seriously consider it if another inhabitable planet were found with few to no humanoids. It is never boring, the characters are well written and you're driven to long for your favorite characters success throughout the entire series. I was pleased with the ending also.

Great series wrap up!

Finally got around to reading the series that started it all. I've read most of the rest of JN (and coauthors) series. They are all highly entertaining reads, but never got around to reading the Amber Projects because they continue to publish so much material. The Amber Project is a good introduction to his writing style and the magical worlds and stories and characters he and his coauthors create. As always, if you read one, you'll want to read them all!

This was a little more slow for me to read. It was a little boring with the switching of perspectives but it started getting faster towards the end. I’m a little sad to be done with Terry’s story. I really enjoyed learning about Kant and discovering that new world with Terry. I would love to read more about Terry’s adventures while sailing and learning more about the aging process of the characters! Are Ludo and Ysa deceased? So many questions. I absolutely loved this series.

Finally finished the series. I was very curious to see how all of the different plot lines would be wrapped up. No clue how the title of the book relates to the story. The ending was very pleasing and it was interesting to see how all of the political maneuvering played out with some interesting twists along the way.
