Finally, an approach for affirmations that makes sense. It’s based on the same principles of positive thinking, and the law of attraction, but its phrased in a way where you can actually convince your subconscious that you’ve already achieved what you’ve set out to. On a personal level, it’s hard to come up with concrete evidence, whether they work or not, but I can definitely attest that is changing the way I’m reflecting on my struggles to a positive one, and giving me a much more positive outlook on life

Great book on how to use afformations instead of affirmations. Just read it... and re-read it. Learn to ask yourself the right questions. Small book - very quick read - high impact.

I'm open-minded, positive and willing to strain the limits of credulity in the world of self-help literature, but this one is snicker-inducing.

I have been doing affirmations a lot, and I have no idea to verify whether or not they work - but I keep doing them when I remember to. This entire review is entirely spoilers.

So, the other day I wanted a library book to support my exploration in affirmations and downloaded this audiobook. I wasn't paying attention to the exact details, and when I heard the narrator start...I was like: "Why are they pronouncing affirmations in such a weird way?" Then I kept listening.

So, St. John has come up with a theory that if/when we create our "affirmations" in the form of a question (as in it is already present) that the effect will be somehow more affirming and effective. So, I listened on with curiosity. He calls them "afformations".

I will say that this little audiobook is narrated quite quickly...think motivational speaker pace. It is total cheerleading, which is fine. (But, a little too fast paced for me generally speaking.) And, I did giggle in a few places. (Getting me to laugh gets at least 1 star). Then he explained a bit more in chapter 1, and I was intrigued. He has you write down your self-limiting beliefs in the form of questions, then flip it around. For example:

"Why am I alone so often?" Change to: "Why am I with wonderful and supportive friends so often?"
Like that.

The 2nd chapter covers anecdotes about people, and how they've used affOrmations resulting in changes in their lives. Then he gives examples of them in different categories (relationships, finances, self-confidence, etc.). At the end he does talk about his website and an app you can use to record and play back your afformations.

So, I remain intrigued. I have written down about 10 which I'll try for a few weeks and see where it goes. I will say this, that trying this method somehow put me in a positive mental space initially. I will try to update in a month to see if anything has shifted. My afformations are about: health, relationships, living situation, and creativity/artistic expression.

Interesting premise about changing affirmations to questions. I keep wondering if the authors are married, which I guess doesn't matter. Need to reread to get it better. More of a manual than theory.

This is an excellent book for any one with something holding them back from being their Best self. The method set forth works for fears, procrastination, self- sabotage, health, relationship and financial goals. "You have not because you all not" gains a whole new meaning.

Short and sweet. You can read it in one sitting. It includes some religious promoting that wasn't to my style, but its positivity is infectious. He plugs his website at least four times, even though the book is short, so that kinda distracted me a little from its message.

Basically, afformations are positive and empowering questions that you ask yourself so your brain will be curious and instinctively search for an efficient answer. Like if your inner critic thinks "Why am I so alone?", an afformation to counter that could be something like "Why am I so lucky to know and be loved by so many people?" He doesn't claim to have the right afformation for you within the book and encourages you to think of your own to suit your own needs. He also encourages you to try to get into the mindset to make changes on your own while you're empowered by your afformations. So it helps promote a healthy, proactive mental approach to problems that goes beyond the "feel-good" sentiments of affirmations.

Compared to other self-help books I've peeked into, this felt more approachable. It can still appeal to secular readers, despite my earlier criticism, since religion is not stressed throughout the entire book like some other self-help books. He says afformations can change your life, but he doesn't go out and say that it'll "change your destiny". I don't see any harm giving this a shot if you're feeling a bit dissatisfied about your life.
