Something Like Family

Heather Burch’s last book, In the Light of the Garden, was a joy to read, and I was very excited to read her new novel. Something Like Family did not disappoint. The book is about second chances, learning to forgive others, and creating your own “family”. I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent with Rave and Tuck and watching them learn from each other. Something Like Family will pull at your heart strings and stay with you long after you finish it. I received an advance review copy of this book from the Great Thoughts’ Ninja Review team. What a beautiful, moving story this was! I fell head over heels in love with the characters and the gorgeous setting of small town Tennessee and was quite emotional when I was finished reading and it was time to say goodbye, Rave and Tuck stole a little piece of my heart.
While this book had a really great storyline what made it special for me was the characterization. Rave and Tuck were very well crafted and Burch really made them come to life. Rave is a young man who’s entire life has been a struggle. When he is at one of the lowest points of his life he gets word that his grandpa, Tuck is alive and wants to meet him. Rave was told that he was long dead so the opportunity to meet him seems unreal. Rave’s mom has been gone for years and he thought she was the only family he had in the world. Tuck is a lonely old man with a heart of gold and watching these two begin to build a relationship was inspiring and so lovely. There was an authenticity to their relationship as well as to their personality traits and characteristics that rang so true to real life.
At it’s core this is a story about forgiveness and second chances and the power and meaning of family. It was simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming and brought out so many emotions in me, I laughed, I cried, I reflected and I loved every minute. There is also a sprinkling of light romance as Rave meets and falls in love with Becca that was so sweet and tender. This was my first Burch book and I can’t wait to read more of her highly evocative, gorgeous books!

Something Like Family is a stirring book about second chances and forgiveness...a book that will tug on your heartstrings and involve all of your emotions. The story is filled with joys and sorrows, families drifting apart and finding their way back home. At the center of the story is Rave, a young man down on his luck, having been abandoned by his mother when he was a teenager. When Rave discovers that he has a grandfather, a man he thought was dead, he's reluctant to open his heart to disappointment again. I loved Rave; instead of being bitter and beaten down, Rave has a goodness in him that we see in his relationships with Tuck, his grandfather, his girlfriend Becca, and the boy he loves like a son, Daniel. The characters in this book are so warm, so human...filled with doubts and worries, but most of all a capacity to love and forgive. This story and its characters filled up a huge chunk of my heart.

I truly loved this book. It is a beautifully written story of love, love of family, past mistakes, forgiveness, and redemption. Rave has had a very hard life. His mom Sharon is a drug addict who just up and leaves him when he is 17. His grandfather Tuck hires a PI to find him and Rave goes to meet Tuck. Tuck served in the Vietnam War and holds a memorial twice a month for his fallen soldiers. Tuck reminds us to always remember our fallen soldiers. Rave starts a new life with Tuck. Both Tuck and Rave learn what family means and how much they mean to one another. I laughed and I cried while I read this book. "Love is always enough. It's the mortar that holds life together." These are my favorite lines from the book and I feel like they sum up the book perfectly. A few days ago I finished reading the ARC of Something Like Family by Heather Burch. I cannot stop thinking about the book. It is sweet and tender. It is about love, trust, family, second chances and the sacrifices we are willing to make for the people we love the most. The title reflects what a real family should be no matter the circumstances. If you really want to read a book about real family love. This is the one! Congratulations, Heather Burch. You really touched my heart with this book!

What a heartwarming book! I read this one in three days. It had it all - love, drama, but most especially, the enduring power of family - and not always family the way we define it. It has been, and I hope it continues to be, a wonderful journey watching Ms. Burch mature as an author. While I have enjoyed all of her books, Something Like Family stands out as her best written book so far. The author weaves her plot, characters, and settings as integral to one another. She has a gift of of making the setting as much of a character as the characters themselves. I
And,oh, how she develops each character, and makes them "Something Like Family" to the reader. It's almost like watching our own children and family members grow and morph into the people they need to become; and watching them fail at that brings tears to our eyes.
Burch's settings are magnificently drawn so that the reader can not only see the place, but even be drawn into it, as one staring at a canvas may do. This reader could truly "feel" each place.
This was one of those books I was sad to finish because I fell in love with most of the characters and did not want to leave them or this small Tennessee town. Bring your hanky.

I wiped away the tears this morning as I finished my first book by Ms. Burch. Why was she not on my radar before now? She has such a wonderful way of writing characters that are just so normal with all their flaws and everything. I saw so many people I knew in her writing of these characters. Grandfather Tuck, Vietnam vet and widower, Rave, Tuck's wounded yet resilient grandson, Becca a down-to-earth local girl with a big heart, and Sharon, Tuck's daughter and Rave's mother, a recovering addict. I just loved all the facts of the story and the expert way they were all tied together with a bittersweet ending. Thank you to the author for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

(4.5) This is such a beautiful and touching story about family, love, and the power of forgiveness. I loved the characters in the book, mostly Rave and Tuck, grandson and grandfather. The relationship that developed between these two really was so very moving. This is a book you will not be able to put down once you begin reading. Very well written and so emotional that I had to grab a tissue a few times. Something Life Family is one not to be missed.

This is my first Heather Burch book, but it won't be my last. This is a great book about second chances. Rave hasn't had the best life. His mother did her best bringing him up, but she was addicted to drugs and eventually left him on his own when he was seventeen. Rave hasn't forgiven her for that. He has no clue if she is even alive anymore. Tuck is finally ready to find his grandson, Rave. Rave eventually moves in with Tuck. They form a nice bond. Rave falls in love with a nice girl, Becca. Things start to fall into place until Tuck becomes ill and Rave's mom rolls into town. Oh and Rave's ex-girlfriend decides to leave her son, Daniel (who Rave loves like his own son) with Rave while she travels with a new friend for a few months. DRAMA! Can Rave's new relationship handle all the stress? Will Rave finally forgive his mother? Will Tuck get better? Will Daniel's mom return? What happens if she doesn't? The ending was perfect! Loved it!

Something Like Family deals with pertinent issues, such as: drug addiction, forgiveness, second chances, multi generational gaps, veteran remembrance and of course the bond of family. This story is filled with emotional highs and lows. You will laugh and cry and you will come out the other end of this book a different person. You will be consumed by the story line and the characters that seem to walk out of the book and become part of your life. You will have a difficult time putting this book down once you begin reading it. It is another beautifully written masterpiece by an amazing author that I have come to love reading.

I was able through NetGalley to request a review copy of Something Like Family, a soon to be released novel by Heather Burch. Burch is one of my favorite contemporary authors because she writes truly beautiful stories about love, forgiveness, and grace. In this book we’re introduced to one of the most loveable characters I’ve come across in a book – Rave Wayne. Rave is a twenty-two year old man who really has had the worst possible things happen to him and yet he has the best heart. At one point in the book he describes himself as a person who “had always seen the worth in a human being, no matter how ugly his soul might be.” And time and time again, Rave proves this in the way he lives. There are so many touching scenes in this book, especially near the end so keep your Kleenex handy. As with every Heather Burch book I’ve read, there is nothing graphic or vulgar. There’s romance with some sizzle, but tastefully written. It’s simply a great book that deserves more than five stars.

A beautiful story that touches the heart. Tears flowed while reading this one. Forgiveness and love are found as the characters deal with their own unique circumstances. They are brought together through family bonds, friendship bonds, health issues and more. Family is found in many different ways. The reference to rocking chairs will always stay with me. I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my personal honest opinion of the story.

What a wonderfully comforting story about second chances for a family broken by addiction, estrangement, and tragedy. I loved the characters and their journeys. Tissues are a must, but this is a feel-good read filled with hope.

What a moving and heartwarming novel of a young man coming of age, of an older man moving past his grief, and the individuals that intertwine and intersect between these two men: grandson and grandfather.
They both have traveled a road filled with tough times they have had to overcome and adversity many never face, but came out the other side stronger and better men. When Rave learns he has a grandfather he is beyond surprised. He was told by his heroin addicted mother that her parents were dead. Wondering why an old man, his grandfather or not, would be seeking him out now as versus years ago, only increased the barriers Rave had put up along his arduous road of survival. When he reaches a dead end on his journey, he decides to go and meet his grandfather. Why not? Stay a week or two and then take off once he has a new plan. Well that was the plan...
As each man builds a relationship with the other and learns to honor and respect the other, they both learn many life lessons along the way.
Forgiveness, grace, love, loss, remembrance, hope, community and family are some of the major topics the author hits in this novel. She does so with eloquence, humor, strength, and honesty. The plot is moving, strong, and multi-faceted. Her characters are extremely well written, relatable, and truthful.
A wonderful and marvelous novel and an amazing read. One you won't want to put down. Enjoy the story of Rave and Tuck and the other men and women in their lives in the town of Barton, Tennessee. You will feel like part of the family in no time.

I didn't know what to expect with this story since it's not my usual reading choice, but wow did it surprise me. Tuck and Rave immediately pulled me into their story and my heart was invested from the start! As much trauma as Rave has been through, he was just a stand up guy who insisted on doing the right thing even when it got him into trouble. And he was definitely known as a troublemaker! Tuck is determined to make things right and I was so glad he "found" Rave and made sure there were no strings attached. Rave and Tuck are both heroes in their own right and I felt "protective" of them the whole time.
Couldn't stand Ashley, but even she has a purpose in the story and I was glad how things turned out with her.
"He's the best man I've ever known." Rave could say that honestly and with absolute confidence.
Truly loved this story, it was deeply touching and I'm so glad I had the chance to read it....I'm so honored to have known Rave and Tuck, they may be fictional characters but their spirit lives in all of us. If you haven't read Burch's work before, start with this one and you'll want more of her beloved stories.

Couldn't stand Ashley, but even she has a purpose in the story and I was glad how things turned out with her.
"He's the best man I've ever known." Rave could say that honestly and with absolute confidence.
Truly loved this story, it was deeply touching and I'm so glad I had the chance to read it....I'm so honored to have known Rave and Tuck, they may be fictional characters but their spirit lives in all of us. If you haven't read Burch's work before, start with this one and you'll want more of her beloved stories.

I received an early readers edition of Something Like Family by Heather Burch from NetGalley. I think it's a wonderful story that depicts the love a family has for each other, be it by blood, or by contract. That line, I took from the book. It was a very emotional read. I've always said, if an author can bring a reader to tears, it's proof they are a gifted writer. You can't help but love the characters, Tuck and Rave. I especially felt a connection to Tuck, the grandfather. I appreciated how a tribute to our veterans was a vital part of the storyline. Another topic that was included was addiction. I think it should bring hope to many people that it's possible to overcome such devastating lifestyles. In the end, I feel it was a very uplifting story and anyone who reads it will enjoy it immensely. I highly recommend it and easily give it 5 stars.

I was pleasantly taken with this book. The way Tuck talks about Millie reminds me of the first 10 minutes of the movie UP. Oh, to have that kind of love. And Rave, Tuck's long lost grandson..you know he has so much pain inside, but is a good person. A really GOOD person with a huge heart. Heather Burch spins a wonderful tale of finding lost family, and all of the hurt and love and confusion that you could imagine goes along with it. I haven't read many novels that are written from a male's point of view, by a woman, and done so in such a seamless, lyrical way. I absolutely loved this book. You're missing out on a wonderful family story if you don't pick this one up. Burch captured me from page one.

This is the first book of Heather's that I have read. It was highly recommended to me by another awesome author. I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading it and couldn't put it down. It was love at first chapter. Rave has been let down his whole life, first by his drug addicted mother then by society. So when a private investigator show up at his job saying that he had a grandfather who was searching for him, what was he to think. But, being the kind of person he was Rave took a chance. This leads to second chances, secrets and ups and downs. I cried and laughed throughout this book. It is so well written with characters that you can love and relate to. You will definitely want to read this one. Love, Family and new beginnings make this book a winner.

Something Like Family is another great story by Heather Burch. This family tale is full of real life problems, heart breaks, new love, second chances, and forgiveness. The main character Rave was raised by a mother who was an addict. After being abandoned by her, thinking he was without any other family, finds he has a grandfather who was looking for him. His grandfather teaches him many things, most of all how to forgive. Rave struggles to start a new life for himself while finding out the true meaning of family. The story winds it's way into your heart, and tugs. This one is sure to bring even the toughest of audiences to tears. Another book that was hard to put down, many thanks to Heather for not disappointing this fan!

WOW! What an amazing book! It grabs your attention from the very beginning and causes you to lose track of time. A very well written story filled with twists and turns that will make you laugh and cry. It is a story of family, love, forgiveness and second chances. It is also a story about remembering the ones who have fought in the wars for us that they never be forgotten.

I loved this book! I was captured from the first page and could not put it down. The author did an incredible job at character description. This book really is about so many things; survival, love, family, trust, forgiveness and the evils of addiction. All the way through the book I felt like I was on a rollercoaster of emotion for the characters. This was my first book by Heather Burch and I will be definitely reading more of her work.

This was one of the most heartwarming stories I have ever read. Love, loss, laughter, addiction, family, desertion, forgiveness, memories. It has it all. It is a very touching love story, a family lost and found. From the beginning to the end it was one great book. One I won’t forget for a long time.
I loved it. I will be reading many more of this author’s books for sure.

Prior to reading this novel,I was very intrigued with the synopsis. However,this book fell victim to weak consistency,that determined the overall rating of this book. While the characterization was good,I find myself skimming way too many pages. It had way too many loopholes,I was trying piece the broken pieces,but it went nowhere.
It could have been much better,but I call them like I see them. On the plus side,I do plan on reading more novels by Heather Burch,but this failed to interest me all throughout.
