I absolutely loved this book but there was one major problem that was just way too huge to ignore. I'll address this issue at the end of my review.

Sarah Robinson has moved herself and 4 year old daughter to the small town of Oak Grove to have a fresh start 3 years after her husband dies unexpectedly. Sarah is just getting to know some of the towns people when she meets Lucas in passing at a small cafe one day. She doesn't expect her next encounter with the very tall, handsome man to be when he

I loved One Last Risk by Marilyn Stopper, the first book in her new Oak Grove series. In this introductory story we meet two people affected by death of loved ones in a fire. Lucas Bennett lost his best friend and fire fighter partner when he was killed while clearing a house on fire. Lucas feels guilty and at fault for this loss. Sarah Robinson lost everything except her young daughter when a fire burned down her house and killing her husband. Sarah decides she needs a fresh start by moving to ...more

There is nothing that compares to small town romance. The deeper connections between the long time residents. The nosy neighbors that look out for one another. Big city heartache is a regular resident in small town love, but the abundance of heart never dwindles, Nancy Stopper, pushes all my buttons with One Last Risk. Lovable characters, beautiful surroundings and hard learned lessons are prevalent. Yet, she still manages to keep the feeling of devotion, hope and healing that I love so much. Sa ...more

One Last Risk is an enjoyable story of a guilt wracked mother and an equally guilt wracked firefighter who find that passion and love can save the day. Placed on temporary leave and forced to work ambulance duty, Lucas has a lot of anger to work out both on the job and off. He meets Sarah, a recently widowed young mother and newcomer to town, when she's injured in a car accident and finds the one person who can calm that anger and give him a future and a family.

The characters are well drawn and

Wasn't sure what to expect but let me tell ya, laughter and tears happened. Lucas was a firefighter/paramedic in Oak Grove where Sarah moved with her daughter Lily to start fresh. I'd say Sarah and Lucas' first meeting was definitely attraction at first sight. Their first meeting was also awkward too, but an accident brought them together again. Lucas wants to get to know Sarah better and her daughter as well. They take small steps but Sarah only knows Lucas as a paramedic, he's not sure when th ...more

Two people who have both lost almost everything in a fire have a chance meeting at the local bakery. The attraction was immediate, the sparks were obvious, yet they were both cautious. Neither were looking for a relationship and both had demons to fight.

I really liked that they didn’t just fall into bed. They worked up to it, they dated, they got to know each other, and they included Sarah’s daughter into their relationship. It was interesting to see them circle each other, sneak around a littl

This book is about Lucas and Sarah, he is a firefighter struggling with some hard issues and she is a single mother trying to overcome her pain and raising an adorable daughter.

How is it that firefighters grab most everyone's heart. Maybe because they're exciting adrenalin junkies who want to save and protect everyone, like Lucas. But Lucas has baggage too. Sarah has her own baggage. Baggage she mostly doesn't deal with in favor of concentrating on raising her daughter. Their meet cute may have failed the first time, but their connection was plain to both of them. This story has so many "feels" you are invested in their lives from the beginning. I have read a lot of firefighter romance novels and there are the ones that are light and fluffy and mainly about the sex appeal of a man in uniform. Then there are those that are filled with angst and darkness of PSTD and the dangers of the job. I was happy to find out, that One Last Risk is neither one of those but takes the best of each of the sides and finds its own way. While it has light, fun, and flirty moments that made me smile and laugh, it also deals with serious issues of loss and le ...more
