Owned and Protected #1

Protecting His Pet

Rate this book
After her brother's life of crime is brought to a sudden end, twenty-two-year-old Kara Jennings fears she may be the next target of the men who killed him. It comes as a shock, however, when she is taken captive by a mysterious man who promises to keep her safe but quickly demonstrates that he will not hesitate to punish her in any way he sees fit if she disobeys him.

Devin Stringer is certain there is something important that Kara is refusing to share with him--something related to her brother's death--and he is fully prepared to be as firm as necessary to get her to tell him the truth, even if that means stripping her bare, spanking her soundly, and keeping her caged like a pet.

Despite her shame at being made to kneel naked at her captor's feet, eat from his hand, and surrender her body to him completely, Devin's dominance leaves Kara helplessly aroused and yearning for him to master her even more thoroughly. When he brings her to the edge of an intense climax only to leave her desperate and wanting, her need for him to claim her properly compels Kara to confess the secret her brother shared with her before his death. But will that information help Devin protect his beautiful pet or will it ultimately put her in greater danger?

Publisher's Note: Protecting His Pet is a stand-alone book which is the first entry in the Owned and Protected series. It includes spankings, sexual scenes, extensive pet play, elements of BDSM, and more. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

I really wanted to like this book, but ultimately it was problematic for me around the lack of consent -- it's not reasonable to call this "BDSM" because the character was kidnapped against her will, tries to escape many times and is punished for it (punishment being humiliation, actual physical abuse and unsafe treatment).

Why isn't this BDSM? Because in a true BDSM scene, the S always ALWAYS has the ability to back out. They can say "no" through a safe word and that "no" is to be respected.

The story attempts to give some rationale to Devin's assault of Kara -- he spied on her search history and saw that she had watched spanking porn. Okay, fine, but does that mean that she consents to being striped naked, forced to defecate and urinate in a bucket, sleeping on the floor of a cage while naked without a blanket and being given a "shower" outside with the hose and then while still tied/hanging there, Devin has sex with her. This is the fictional world version of "slut shaming" or "she was asking for it" which is just gross.

There is a delicate balancing act (no pun intended) between hot "forced" sex scenes in erotica and actual sexual assault. While it may look the same to an observer, the role of fiction is to clear those hurdles for the reader -- basically to play with that dynamic and use it to titillate. There are AMPLE stories and books that do this incredibly well -- I'm sorry to say that this is not one of them.

DNF and had the hard "nope" when after 24 hours without food or water, Kara is given pet food bowls and forced to lap water by her assaulter. This isn't hot. It's torture porn. If that's your kind of thing, cool, cool. Just don't call it "BDSM" because that's not what BDSM is.

99 cents at Amazon 11/25/17

Thank God this was only 99 cents. I'm no prude by any means but I hate stories where the "hero" humiliates the heroine to get her to "follow his rules." In this one he made her sleep in a cage naked, eat and drink out of doggy bowls, made her crawl while he had her collared, and made her pee in a bucket because, (insert sarcasm), funny thing, she tried to get away from him a few times after he kidnapped her. Guess he was expecting her to just go along with everything he said and did with no complaints and when she talked back to him, he humiliated her and then called them "rewards" when he allowed her to use the bathroom like a normal person and not a bucket. Nothing sexy about any of this and nothing redeeming about him at all, even after his secret came out, which was not really a secret.

I’ve clearly moved on in what I want from a book. I read the whole story but enjoyed it only at a very surface level. It didn’t occupy my thoughts or draw out my emotions, the whole experience was just a little lacking. I still liked Kara and still couldn’t see a reason for Dev not to have been more honest with her.

First read 4 stars
Personally I love this book, but you have to be able to stomach some dubious consent and some challenging situations. I know I couldn't live or play that way where, in the words of Devin, the choice is to obey or disobey. However I do enjoy reading stories about it, when they are well written, and that certainly applies to this book. If you're not into kink, humiliation and punishment (at least in your books) then this book might not be for you.

It could be argued that Devin should have been honest about the situation from the off, as Kara would most likely have been more inclined to follow his instructions etc. However that wouldn't have given us a boundaries pushing, steamy and intense read. Whilst Kara appeared to have no free will in many of the situations, as time progresses she realises this fulfils some of her deepest, most hidden and secret desires. Desires that Devin is well aware of, having hacked her computer search history! Devin's controlling, punishing and often humiliating treatment of Kara is actually not only what she deep down wants, but also needs.

I liked both characters, Dev occasionally irritated me with how it was OK for him to keep secrets (and basically lie to Kara) whilst engaging in a relationship that requires total trust and honesty. However, it was done from the best of intentions and with the intent to save Kara's life. Kara is a really strong character and I loved that she never broke, well not until Devin behaved like a total idiot near the end. I also liked a line near the end that made it so much more believable - I'm going to hide it as a spoiler, though out of context it might not be considered as such. . It was also good that Devin admitted and owned his mistakes, and was prepared for the tables to be turned as it were.

This story really held my attention, the pace is good and there is plenty of 'non-sexual' action too. The style of writing is really easy to read and the story flows really smoothly. Even though I have 4 arcs I need to read over the next week I'm really tempted to jump straight into book 2!

My rating is a 3.5, rounded up to 4. I enjoyed reading this book, but was distracted by the poor editing/proof reading. I don't like my pizzas undercooked or my plane to land short of the runway. My point (and then I promise to move on), please hire some good editors and publish a finished product!

I can still recommend this book because there were so many sexy elements going on in the story. I liked the total power exchange (tpe) between the H and h inherent in this abduction story. The h was so feisty which made the interplay between the two characters a joy to read and set up the punishment scenes beautifully. I found myself rooting for both the h to give her captor a good dose of sass and for the H to provide a good dose of discipline. And both happened in spades. I tend to like reading about pet-play when it is done right and here is where I thought the story excelled. When our feisty h was "bad," she was treated much like a dog (think leash, cage, dog bowl, etc.). "Training" and "humiliation" are also kinks I love to read about and their presence went well with the pet theme. I also thought the author did a nice job of developing the relationship between the H and h. There was a slow but very hot build to their relationship which made the interplay more realistic than an instant, microwaved love affair.

So there you have it...a nice little kinky read with some delightful characters and a decent story. This tale earned 3.5 tail wags from me.

Don't bother

This book started off interesting but after a few chapters it just couldn't keep my interest. The characters had no real development and what he did was rape. Just because a body reacts does not imply consent. Telling someone that they only have 2 choices, to comply or be punished is not a choice it is psychological torture. And more importantly RAPE!

I enjoy a good dark romance as much as the next person reading this review but save your money on this one. The writing was sub par, no character development, poor grammar, and an anticlimactic ending.

Glad I only spent a dollar, but still wish I could get my money back.

📚I am honestly and voluntarily reviewing a copy of this book 📚
I really enjoy BDSM genre books, as well as dark themes. In those, there was concent or an understanding between partners. This book had none of that. Devin starting beating on Kara before any trust, understanding, or anything between the 2 could develop. I felt like he beat her into submission, no concent, no power exchange, no bueno!!!!!

I did enjoy this book, however I have to say this is not BDSM as there was nothing safe or consensual about what happened to Kara. This is actually a tale of kidnap, abuse and if I'm honest just a bit of Stockholm Syndrome.
On the plus side it is reasonably well written but there are a few issues with typos. Ultimately the story was a quick sexy read if you are ok with triggers (yeah there's one or two). It is a HEA love story I guess so all good in the end.

I read this such a long time ago I can't remember all the details as to why I gave it one star. I think ultimately I felt the writing was very unpolished; I felt it needed an editor badly. It ruined my immersion. I also think I remember there being plot holes that again were a big distraction while I was reading. I do think I will try other stuff by this author though.

The smut was great though and I will be reading the others in the series😂

While both characters had a lot of passion during sex and/or punishment it fell flat outside of that. I wasn't able to connect with either of the characters until the last little bit of the book. The last maybe 25% of the book was great. I finally felt connected with the characters and cared what happened to them. If Devin had communicated even a little bit and shown a little tenderness even with the heavy punishments and stuff it would have been so much better for her mental health. The story is a little dark but not what I would consider extreme, although for some it will be I suppose. I think the description was a bit off. Yes there was spanking and he did call her pet and have her eat from a dog bowl at times but I wouldn't consider what happened in the story extensive pet play. There were BDSM elements but it was much more on the sadism and masochism side. I am going to go forward with the series as it does show promise.

Kara was trying to live her life with walls up around herself while trying to get her brother to change his ways of making money. She knew he was making his money through illegal means. But her brother kept her in the dark purposely so she had no knowledge of any of the illegal means of what he did for work, all until he was murdered. She had seen what had happened to her brother after his body was found. Unbeknownst to her, she was to be dealt with like her brother was until she was taken by Devin. Devin was trying to be a rock in the storm that Kara was brought into unknowingly. She was not informed of the whole story because Devin was trying to keep her safe. But Devin had fallen in love with Kara just as she had fallen in love with him. Only Devin had a couple of other things that he had hidden from Kara and was trying to run away without mentioning those secrets knowing he had her heart as she had his. To know more, take a look to see what kind of a twisted secret he had kept from her, The woman he loved.

Dark, sexy, hot, well written, wonderful. Not for the feint-hearted. I loved this story. Kara is feisty and strong willed used to minding herself and everyone else. Devin is strong and focued if a little dense. Both are caught in a situation not of their making. There are plenty of elements to hold the readers interest including spankings and pet play. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and I very highly recommend it. This is a very easy to read, enjoyable, interesting and sexy story.

What a great storyline Measha Stone has given us with Devin and Kara. It begins with Kara's brother being murdered and then her being kidnapped. Going through this journey with these two was so enthralling. I felt like I was there, personally watching them as they went through their intense scenes and listening to them talk through their feelings and emotions. They way they grew and developed individually and as Dom/sub. It hit on a lot of great points in a Dom/sub relationship and my heart truly melted at the ending. I definitely gave this book a five star rating.

Other reviewers have pointed out the flaws in this book (non-consent, extreme humiliation, etc). I'd also like to point out that by leaving her alone in a cage with no way to get out should, say, the house catch on fire, he puts her in extreme danger (so, even if you were okay with everything he did to her, this action crosses the line from hurt to potential actual harm).

Surprisingly enjoyable read!

I got this as a BookBub freebie, so I didn't have any expectations going into it. I don't generally read contemporary romances, especially of the crime/mob family variety, but something about this appealed - or maybe I was just needing some anti-YA smutty goodness. Regardless, I found this much more fun than I expected.

Kara's horrible older brother has led a criminal life that she has constantly tried to get him out of, in addition to trying to keep herself clear of it all. She has consciously tried not to know what he is involved with and avoids meeting his associates. When he is tortured and murdered, he leaves her holding the bag (so to speak).

One of her brother's colleagues, Devin, whom she met one time in passing, is sent to kidnap and kill her. But first he has to find out what she knows and what her brother gave her before he died. Devin kidnaps Kara and takes her to his remote cabin, where all sorts of BDSM-y fun occurs.

If you don't like the captive-fantasy trope and/or BDSM, this is probably not the read for you. But if you do enjoy that, with a solid mystery and a hint of mafia/crime boss for flavor, then you might well enjoy this one!

(I am looking forward to reading the next two in the series - the cop brother sent after the corrupt mobbed-up politician's runaway daughter, and the seriously bad/scary/sexy special forces friend we met in PROTECTING HIS PET - when I next need a fun smutty break.)

This is a great story. It's main female character, full of self-discovery, and strength. All of the characters are well developed and have depth. For me, if the characters are well developed and have depth, the story seems to flow. It also leaves openings for future stories about the other characters in the book. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

Have you ever read a book where you think the hero is good, then you aren’t so sure then you are then you aren’t? This is that book... I kept thinking I understood our hero but it wasn’t till the end that my thoughts where completely confirmed one way or another... overall a great read though a bit over the top at times.

It was ok...but this played more on the stockholm syndrome that in her ¨willingly¨ giving him her submission.

Some of the punishments felt more like abuse rather than discipline. He never set up the rules, just told her that her only choice was to obey or not (he´ll do anything he wanted with her anyway) so that´s why i think she developed the stockholm syndrome rather than ¨discovering¨ herself (as was hinted).

And then after placing her trust in him, he just ¨betrays¨ her like that?!? Why she didn´t have a mental breakdown is beyond me...at the end she should´ve put more of a fight before giving in to him so easily.

3.75 richly-smutty-not-for-everyone stars! I ENJOYED this book 😉 but as I mentioned maybe not for everyone- let the title of the book be your guide (seriously) and you’ll be fine. This is one of those “purposeful” works that is best read maybe not at work.

Everything he did to her was so disgusting. And he could’ve just been honest and I’m sure she would’ve told him everything he needed to know. No one deserves what he put her through.

Mixed feelings

I disliked the first half of the book to the point I almost stopped reading it. I could t being myself to stop the book because I'm so anal and once I start something, I have to finish it. The second half of the book was much better. Can't say that I'd recommend this book, however if you choose to read it just be aware that it's very dark.

Kara's older brother, Tommy has been her guardian ever since their mother died. He has always been into making his money the illegal way and she tried to stay as far away from that part of his life, all while trying to get him to work a normal legal job. When Tommy picked her up for their weekly dinner he was acting a little wierd and as they are heading to the door to his apartments stairs he gets a phone call. Kara enters the stairwell and then the door slammed shut behind her and she noticed Tommy wasn't inside with her. She waited a few minutes and then heads back out to find a trail of blood that leads her to the alley and it stops by a set of tires tracks. Tommy turned up dead and the cops didn't do anything about it, they chocked it up to a drug deal gone wrong. After using what little savings she has to bury her brother she rented a car and decided she would leave in the morning to get whatever Tommy left her in a post office box a few towns over. She wasn't sure what was in it, but she figured it at least has some money in there. When she wakes up she knows something is off. Sure enough a hand wrapped around her mouth and another hand holding on to her. Devin was a part of Tommy's crew and knows his sister either has something her brother left her or she knows where it is. Devin needs Kara to understand that he is trying to help and protect her, but he needs what ever Tommy left her. Devin doesn't want to hurt Kara, but he will definitely punish her if she doesn't behave. With Devin's big boss wanting Kara dead and everything incriminating delivered to him, he's got his work cut out for him. Kara only wants to get away from Devin and she is disgusted with herself for liking the punishments he gives her. This story has a lot of twists and turns. Can Devin keep Kara safe or will Kara prove to be too much for him to handle? Grab this book today it's an excellent read and some very hot and steamy s*x scences. There are BDSM elements in this story which just made me love it more.

Add an Extra Half Star

Kara had no one left, after her much older brother, Tommy, was tortured and murdered by the crime family he worked for. She had tried for many years to get him to leave the mob and get a real job, but he always blew her off. So she moved out of his home and made her own normal life after she turned 18.

Now Tommy was dead and she, unknowingly, also had a target on her back. Devin, an associate of Tommy's, was sent by the family to learn what Tommy had left behind and then kill her. She is abducted by Devin and taken to the farmhouse he has been restoring for his planned retirement. Devin is a sadist/dominant, who realizes Kara's submissive tendencies and desires, and plays into them from the moment he takes her. Although Devin has no intention of killing Kara, he does need to learn what Tommy had been hiding and where it is located. Information he is sure Kara, at least, knows the location of.

This was a well written and developed story with well portrayed characters. There was a good balance of the various criteria of the relationship development, sex, and backstory that make for a good romance. Even though this storyline was developed around a mafia connection, which generally doesn't interest me as I often find them full of too many gory details, that aspect of the story was kept in the background and didn't bother me at all. If you enjoy a good BDSM story, you'll likely enjoy this one.

Review Rating: 5.0 out of 5 stars.

Caging his pet's heart and soul.

I received an Advance Reader Copy for Protecting His Pet (Owned and Protected Book 1) written by Measha Stone and voluntarily reviewed this book. Kara Jennings was standing right next to her older brother Tommy one minute and the next, he was gone and buried. The next thing she knows, Kara was right in the middle of a real situation...threatened and kidnapped by a man she barely knew - Devin. To top it off, she has a singular request from Tommy to enact, and Devin wants to know everything about it and how it relates to his death.

This was a dark and gritty abduction story, and it kept me engrossed from beginning to end. I loved Kara's character; her inner strength, her sassy & nontrusting spirit, and her push-the-captor jabs. Until she finally realized that Devin says what he means and does what he says...but will he always? We see Devin's caring for Kara coming through from time to time, but then, he had his own agenda as well. All in all, a darkly sexy read and not for readers not into themes leaning towards the heavier-rather-than-lighter pet play. I look forward to reading her next story in the series, Protecting His Runaway (Owned and Protected Book 2)!
