Good, thorough, clear descriptions and appealing photos make this the right book if you're interested in making dishcloths. My one caveat is that I felt most of the patterns require intermediate, not beginner skills (but then I like something fairly simple I can crochet while talking or watching TV)
My only gripe with this book is that the yarn used is not commonly found in American craft stores. 8/2 yarn is a light fingering or sport weight yarn that's mostly used in weaving projects and bought by the pound on a cone. I've been knitting for years and recently got back into crochet. I like that they use the diagram as well as the written instructions.
The aunts taught me to crochet when I was young - and, unfortunately, I didn't pay close enough attention/think it was as useful as they did. After all, they also knew how to make lace and hand-sew and who wants to know how to do all that in the age of feminism? I jettisoned the home ec classes and took science. But as the years went on, it was almost as if my hands began to long to do something creative and useful. I've been knitting for decades now, and have experienced how calming yet stimulating all those hand crafts can be, and it is so lovely to be able to gift special items, often in the color and fiber type a daughter really wants. So, after years of snuggling under several of my aunts' crocheted afghans and leaning back on a huge crocheted pillow that my Aunt Ida made, I decided to try to pick the skill back up. Not easy at first, but this book helped me feel that I wasn't a total failure! Now on to granny squares!
I just wrote a longish review of this book that included my history with crafts galore. Fortunately for anyone who reads my reviews, my hand slipped and all of it is gone! So. I learned crochet in my 20's, as danced through so.many.crafts in the next decade or so. Eventually crochet fell by the wayside in favor of other things. And now, many decades later, I'm back. I can no longer knit as much as I once could because of arthritis among other things and I find myself unable to remember what to do, and this book has been a valuable aid to learning all over again, along with YouTube videos and another book or two. For that reason, I highly recommend Easy Crochet Dishcloths. For me, I recognize most of the stitches, but not the pattern symbols (they didn't have charts back then, far as I know). So I may or may not struggle to learn this new aspect of crochet, and continue to just read the instructions, without the charts.
I love this pattern book. It has everything needed: a list of notions needed, yarn type, a listing of stitches with demonstrations, pictures - although I wish they were larger for tired eyes. I can zoom the pics, though. The instructions seem easy to follow. The patterns seem interesting. I can't wait to try the patterns. I give this book 5 stars. I hope to see more crochet patterns by this author.
Glad I picked this up, I had fun making the patterns from this book and they were pretty approachable, even for a beginner. The written instructions were solid but I mostly went off the visual patterns which were well done. I will note that the patterns were mostly much larger than I needed and I would have appreciated a few smaller options, but I was mostly able to look at the patterns and scale them as needed.
If you want to make dishcloths using different stitches, you may enjoy this book. My opinion is that if you're a beginner and need a reference guide, there are many other books that would be more useful and interesting. If you're not a beginner, you probably won't need a book to tell you how to do the different stitches to make a dishcloth.
So surprised that this book ONLY offered ELEVEN dishcloth patterns, and poorly photographed ones, at that! Many of the projects' stitch patterns are hard to discern by the accompanying photo. I guess this is a good book for beginners, but - really - beginners just crochet a large gauge swatch. Voila! Dish cloth!
Definitely easy to understand! It's been many years since I've done any crochet and this threw me back into so effortlessly. I do wish there were more stitches involved but in time, I'll work into it. The patterns were easy to understand and cute.
This is probably my 3rd or 4th time reading this book. I've recently discovered a stash of cotton so I decided to make some wash cloths. Unfortunately I'm no good at making up my own patterns. Fortunately this book has a lot of choices!
really great patterns in here. i did all but two of the patterns, they were all easy to understand and turned out great. my favorite pattern was eranthis. will definitely come back to this book again.
I like the idea of making my own dishcloths, though I agree with another reviewer that the photographs of the clothes often obscure the patterns and make it hard to know how the final version should look.
I was disappointed in this book. I tried three of the patterns and I had trouble with all of them. I've been crocheting for decades. I finally gave up on the book and I'm returning it to the library.
I’m sure they are nice patterns but the photos, while artful, are all of the folded edge of the towels and you can’t actually see what the finished stitches look like.
I liked the cloths but wanted clearer photos. I haven't tried to make any of them to see how they feel. I plan to make some for my son when he goes to college next month.
Let me preface, I am a knitter more than a crochet artist. I do not know the coding and haven’t done crochet enough to be familiar with how the charts are read. That being established, this does an excellent job of explaining both in writing and diagrams how to crochet. It goes through each of the stitches, what they look like on the chart, and how they are coded in written instructions. There are excellent photos showing the stitches and how each motif appears when completed. I very much enjoyed reading through this and testing out some of the stitches for dishtowels I am making.
3/31/25: Fantastic guide for a brand new crochet-er. I’m not very good and made a bunch of mistakes, BUT the instructions were very easy to follow, the diagrams were so helpful and I made at least six new dish towels/pot holders, so I’m quite happy!
Update 11/15/25: It’s November, and I have actually bought this book. I love the library for testing out books like these, and this one’s no different. I’m now attempting to make every type of washcloth in the book. This one was perfect for a beginner like myself.
