My Dog Mouse is a simplistic story of a child wanting to take a dog for a walk. This book has been translated from Swedish into English. This is a good international book that demonstrates how the story line works for all children who are longing to have a pet dog. Many children, no matter their language, can empathize and identify with the main character of this story because, at some point, a child has wanted a pet. Due to the plainness of this story, it may or may not keep the interest of students. This book could be used to teach text to self connections and it could be used with pre-kindergarten to kindergarten aged students.

"I love Mouse."

This tender charming book will open your heart to witness the love that is very evident between a very old, fat dog, with ears as thin as pancakes, and a young girl who comes faithfully to his home and asks if she can take him out for a walk.

"Can I take Mouse for a walk?" I ask, and I'm always allowed.

Together they take a very slow stroll around the block pausing for Mouse to sniff the lampposts and fences for a long time and engage in his outside world. They amble into the park where they share a snack, Mouse eating the little girl's too. Then it's back on track...

"Step, pause. Step, pause. Step, pause. "

The wind starts to blow and together they weather the force with Mouse's ears flapping like flags and him shutting his eyes against the turbulence. He is rewarded with meatball treats and then it's homeward bound.

When she drops him off she sadly stands until she can't see her old friend any more. She hates to leave him and go on her way home. The most beautiful part of the story that will tug at your heartstrings is you see Mouse looking out the window because he feels exactly the same way about her.

The last line sums up the story perfectly...

"I wish Mouse was mine."

The simple kid-friendly illustrations use soft colours with lots of expression. The book is translated from Swedish and the take-away is that animals are very important no matter what their age and they love to feel special as they spend quality time with their beloved humans. I love the book and highly recommend it.

So many times youngsters wish they could have a pet of their own. In this charming and poignant picture book, the young narrator longs for a dog but not just any dog. There's just something about Mouse that is appealing. It isn't so much that they do anything particularly exciting or even go for a brisk walk, but that they are spending time together. Mouse's kind owner has no problem with allowing the narrator to take him out for a walk. Mouse is old, slow, and fat and doesn't even belong to the narrator who seems to be a little girl. But she loves him and wishes he were her dog. From the last illustration in which he peeks out of the window, it's clear that Mouse feels the same way. the simple illustrations use soft colors and lines with small figures so that the characters' surroundings become important but not as much as their relationship with one another. Translated from Swedish, this picture book will prompt readers to think about how important the bond between humans and animals can be and how much Mouse must look forward to those outings. The book is touching on several different levels, and will surely remind those of us who have our dogs or cats to spend more time with them. Their time with us is precious and fleeting.

A young child takes "Old Man" Mouse, a sweet, fat, old dog for a walk. Their ordinary walk is heartfelt by the young dogwalker whose deep affection for Mouse is evident. Their park adventure includes a picnic lunch and a windy walk ~~ always the slowest step-pause-pause-step ~~ end in a treat of meatballs, taken from the walker's pocket. Lindström's titles always tug at the heartstrings and this title's ending is no exception.

Small girl tells the story of a very short walk she takes with Mouse, the dog, that takes a very long time since he's so old and they walk slowly. When they get to Mouse's house, the girl gives him back to the lady who owns him and tells her they had a very nice walk. Sweet story about love and kindness between two beings who spend time together, but who do not belong to each other.

The title hooked me. The story is cute, but so sad. The dog the main character is walking isn't even theirs, but they really want him. They have to give him back at the end. So sad! One thing that just *killed* this story for me were the TERRIBLE illustrations. They were just so bad and awkward, which just took over the whole thing. Sad.

This one is truly endearing. This story is not like any I've read before. An old dog gets walked around town by a boy who upon returning it to its rightful owner, experiences a mutual melancholy. What a wonderful story about aging, care, and companionship. Highly recommend.

I love the idea of a kid dog-walker, but the story didn't really work for me. The text was too wordy and stream of consciousness.

What a sad payoff to what seemed to be a fairly ordinary story. I don't care for the art at all. Thank you to the teacher who read this aloud on youtube.

A young girl takes Mouse, an old dog, on a slow and rambling walk to a park. “Step, pause. Step, pause.” Readers will bask in the comfortable friendship of girl and dog expressed by the softly colored illustrations and the leisurely pace of the narrative. Back where they began, the girl watches as Mouse follows his owner inside his home and wistfully says, “I wish Mouse was mine.”
