In the board book, children are trying to bake little cakes, but the kitty keeps getting in the way! They get out all the ingredients, and mix the salt, flour, and baking powder. Kitty tries to spill the flour! They add butter and sugar. Maybe a little sugar gets on their hands and they eat it. The eggs are accidentally broken on the floor, and kitty licks up some of the egg! The children mix in the milk and vanilla, and the cakes are ready to bake. They add a delicious frosting and it's time for tea!

This is such a cute little book! The text is very simple and short, just right for tiny readers. The whole book has such a soothing and calming atmosphere, and the antics of the kitty are so hilarious!

I love the adorable illustrations. The art style is soft with warm colors. This book actually inspires me to get in the kitchen and bake something! You can almost smell the delicious aroma of the cakes wafting off the pages.

This picture book is so adorable. <3 I was surprised to find out that it was published recently because it has the feel of a classic book. I love the illustrations, and sweet, short text. The pages are nice and thick too so my youngest nephew can turn pages without destroying them. ;)

BABY CAKES is a sweet board book about family and baking. The story features siblings who are baking baby cakes (cupcakes), as they bring out the ingredients and mix them up. Even their cat gets in on the fun. In the end, they enjoy tea with their creations.

What I loved: The illustrations in this are really lovely and the two siblings come to life throughout the pages. Oversized font makes this really easy to read aloud and helps with early word recognition. Simple phrases convey a sweet story that children will enjoy exploring. With connections of family and a love for baking, this is a great read for little ones.

Final verdict: A sweet board book about family and a love of baking, BABY CAKES is a charming read that toddlers and preschoolers are sure to enjoy.

Baby cakes, as you might have guessed from the title, are cupcakes, and they always seem to hit the spot. In this board book, which even contains a recipe for cupcakes and their frosting, a young boy, Baby, and his older sister bake up a batch of theses yummy desserts. As I have cats who like to investigate whenever I am whipping up something in the kitchen, I had to smile as Kitty gets into mischief while trying to help. The text describes the process each step of the way, even including the gathering of utensils and ingredients. The images are colorful, and will make readers smile at the seriousness with which these two approach their task. Of course, the payoff of having some cupcakes on which to dine makes all the time and effort worthwhile.

Baking time is fun time for a sister and little brother when they gather in the kitchen to make cupcakes for a tea party. They wear their aprons, measure flour and even keep kitty from helping of course there are a few mishaps but Mommy gets the cupcakes in the oven just in time for tea. The large delightful drawings make this book a happy comfy read, the end papers provide an added bonus of cupcake recipes.
A big sister and little brother explore and play in the kitchen while trying to make cupcakes for a tea party. Reviewer 4

diverse picture book (baking, cupcakes; for toddlers 1.5 and up)
* prominently features diverse characters: two adorable darker-skinned children and their mischievous cat, and a responsible grown up to help.
* great for one-on-one reading. The board book is a little small for sharing in larger storytime groups, but it is a short story with sweet pictures and lots of funny oops! moments to entertain the kids. Perfect for sharing with your child after a day of baking.

This could work well for a toddler storytime about baking. I wish there were more things you could act out together, but if the kids act out licking their fingers it could get gross quickly.
