Quiet Places : A Woman s Guide to Personal Retreat
Meet with God in the Quiet Places. "The purpose of retreat," writes Jane Rubietta, "is not to check off a list of Scriptures read, quotes studied, or prayers said. It is an escape into the calm arms of God." Quiet Places leads you into that meaningful time with God whether your retreat to solitude is twenty minutes while the kids are tucked in bed or a day or two of personal getaway. Each chapter of Quiet Places offers thought-provoking, spirit-prodding inspiration, weaving together practical outlines and principles to help you find God in the midst of all that a busy woman faces daily. Quiet Places provides teaching and encouragement for groups as well as individuals.

I found this book when I wasn't even looking for it, among a couple boxes of books I picked up from nearby woman who was moving and giving away stuff.
It became a helpful and unexpected companion during Lent, as I try to find some space in my schedule for reading and reflection.
Although the author is apparently a well-known speaker, I had never heard of her and found a kindred spirit among her words and counsel.
Some of the chapters spoke to areas of my life where I had already recognized a need to grow or change in and they served as helpful reminders. Others spoke to me in places where I am right now.
This is one of those books that I can see myself returning to at different seasons of my life, and each time finding a helpful and uplifting companion for the journey.
A neat touch at the end of every chapter are the quotes from other authors on the topic, Bible verses that are applicable, suggestions for reflection, and questions to ask yourself as you contemplate the theme of each chapter.

If you are looking for topics to explore during a personal retreat, Quiet Places is an excellent resource. The book has 12 chapters, each addressing a different topic. Many of the topics address issues such as unforgiveness, stress, emotions, etc. There is a short story based on the author's experience that relates to the topic in the chapter. After the story, there are quotes, scriptures, a journal exercise, prayer, creative activities, questions and finally a song. If one did all of the activities that are suggested, one could really experience some deep meditation and self-reflection which is what a personal retreat is all about. Scripture is sprinkled throughout the book. The intent of the book is to draw the reader into a closer relationship with God.
I liked the layout of the book and the variety of exercises. Jane Rubietta did a wonderful job packing a lot of information and ideas into this marvelous resource.

This is a wonderful book, especially used as a daily (or weekly) devotional. Some of the sections I read in 1 day ... others took me several days. The book encourages journaling, quiet times with God, as well as some healthy introspection. Some of the sections did not relate to me at this time in my life ... but other sections were exactly what I needed at this time. I can go forward with some good ideas and some wonderful plans for growing ever closer to Christ.

One of the best books I've read on this topic.
