In the tail end of the 24th Century, Special Inspector Michael Pedroni pursues Jax Marlin, a beautiful and elusive vigilante. It’s a wild cat and mouse chase that will take him from Earth to the Bacchus Dome and beyond.
Jax Marlin is not your average criminal. She seeks out evil-doers and law-breakers, doling out justice in whatever way she sees fit. But lately, she finds she’s been gift-wrapping criminals specially for her favorite copper.
Four of the world’s leading criminals are lining up to form an alliance. Jax is determined to stop them. Hot on her heels, Inspector Pedroni finds himself questioning the difference, if any, between her justice and his. More than that, he wonders why, when he’d had her in his grasp, he was unable to slap on the restraints and bring her in.

To Catch a Marlin is a curious story that takes place a few centuries from now, but it's not necessarily set in the typical futuristic way one is used to. There are aspects that are easily related to our current times, which makes the story more credible.
The storyline is a love-hate relationship between a cop and a very sexy vigilante told in a very fresh, fun and laidback style. Travel, love, sex, crime, hedonistic space resorts all conspire to make this a very enjoyable read.
Spoilers? Nah, not a chance in hell! It's best you grab a copy and enjoy the read.
I very much look forward to reading T.K Toppin's other material.
Jax Marlin: To Catch a Marlin is the first book in the To Catch a Marlin Series by T.K Toppin. This is my first book by Ms. Toppin- and I was seriously blown away by her fantastic story. She definitely got my attention, and has me excited to read the rest of the series. There are several more books in the series, available now- which I will be diving into asap- because if this first book is anything to go by, the rest of the series is set to be quite an exciting and fun ride. This is an addictive futuristic sci-fi adventure story- with mystery, suspense, action, thrills, and so much more. It’s like an old Noir detective story crossed with a vigilante graphic comic, then set in the future with spaceships, and all the futuristic technology. I was hooked before I had even begun to read the story. The incredibly beautiful, and quite intriguing cover instantly had my attention- then when I read the blurb, there was no question if I would read it- it was an instant one-click for me. I was soon caught up in all the intriguing development and action as it unfolded- following along to discover what would happen. Ms. Toppin’s world building skills are quite masterful, creating complex landscapes and ‘world/s’ in which to set her story. Her attention to detail is superb- crafting a world with its own unique flavour and feel- with advanced technology, transportation (both on-world and off-world), and incredible futuristic settlements/metropolis’. She has such a ‘visual’ quality to her writing- a dynamic feel that sets her story apart from others in the same genre. I really recommend this story, especially to those who love a great cat and mouse mystery- all wrapped up in a sci-fi wrapper. What’s not to love? Brilliant!
Jax Marlin - To Catch A Marlin by T.K. Toppin is a sci fi story set in the future but not a future that is too farfetched. The story is about the relationship between a cop and a vigilante or should I say the love/hate relationship between the two. The story is fun and easy to read as TK’s story telling is uncomplicated and refreshing.
Jax Marlin does not see herself as a vigilante but the law doesn’t agree with her. She sets out to right the wrongs of very horrible people and with good reason. She reminds me of the Arrow.
Michael Pedroni is a Special Inspector sent to catch the vigilante but the chase is on.
Jax Marlin - To Catch A Marlin is an action packed “cat and mouse” space adventure, but just who is the cat? And what’s the prize for catching the mouse? I’ve enjoyed others of Toppin’s futuristic stories and this book did not disappoint! I’m adding Jax Marlin - The Complete Short Story Series to my TBR so I can see what happens next between her hardened cop and sexy vigilante characters.
Wow, where do I even start with this novel, Jax Marlin - To Catch A Marlin by TK Toppin??? I suppose it should go without saying, but the cover to this book is what drew me in. The bright and loud attention grabbing face right there lures you in to find out what this book could possibly be all about. I have never read anything from TK Toppin prior to this so I went in blind solely based off the cover and a few teasers I had come across my feed. I am glad that I did because this novel really sucked me in on an unexpected adventure to the future.
This book really has a bit of everything in it, creating a perfect novel to most people. I loved how the sci-fi futuristic things were not only unexpected but felt very realistic and possible. I found myself feeling as if I was right there in whatever world our author has created for that moment, along with the characters as they experience things first hand. I had not expected it but I loved it. Then throw in the cat and mouse mystery and you literally are on the edge of your seat from beginning to end to find out what will happen and how things will all come to a conclusion. I am so excited to also find out that there will be more, some already available to read, in this series. I look forward to getting lost in them soon and am anxious to find out what else TK Toppin has available to read.
Jax Marlin, the vigilante. After losing her family she makes it her life mission to rid the world of evil-doers and law-breakers. She is kick a$$. When four of the world’s leading criminals are lining up to form an alliance she is determined to stop them. She will gift wrap them for "her copper" to bring in.
This was a great read with a cross between sci-fi, mystery, and suspense. I will have to say that I loved, loved, loved Jax's fight scenes. They were so well written that you felt like you were in the middle of the fight. I found my self ducking and weaving and cheering Jax on. She is one tough, bad-a$$ chick. She is keeping an eye on Inspector Pedroni who is out to apprehend her. In the background they have an attraction to each other. I loved the small tokens she left him.
Ms. Toppin does a great job of writing a story that keeps the pages turning. It was non stop action, angst, suspense and mystery. I loved the sci-fi part of it also, it kept the story intriguing. I definitely will have to read the other Jax Marlin stories.
I voluntarily read a copy of this book for Nerd Girl Official.
I took the bait and got hooked! I have to admit that I was enticed in by the cover ... it’s alluring and mysterious and fits Jax Marlin’s character perfectly. The childhood trauma of witnessing horrific family deaths triggered Jax’s transformation into a self-styled vigilante with a mission to take down dangerous criminals. But working outside the law puts her on the wanted list, and Special Inspector Pedroni is charged with catching her. It’s a pursuit that leaves Jax and Pedroni mutually intrigued and obsessed. The story takes Jax away from Earth to the Bacchus Dome, a space city where anything goes. She’s hot on the heels of four colourful criminals who intend to form an alliance. Pedroni is not far behind. Will she catch them? Will he catch her? ... Read to find out. It’s a thoroughly absorbing read.
SPOILER: This story contains some dark subject matter and may be triggering to anyone that’s dealt with sexual assault.
Jax Marlin-To Catch a Marlin is a story about overcoming your past. Set in the future, this is the story of Jax-a vigilante, and Pedroni-the Inspector in charge of capturing her. After a traumatic childhood, Jax is determined to right wrongs and make criminals pay. Pedroni is a cop from a long line of cops and just can’t understand why people take the law into their own hands. After much fighting, destruction, and chasing-they realize they are not that different and they’ve come to love each other.
I liked the overall premise, but for me this book was just ok. I’m sure that it’s just a matter of personal preference and others would greatly enjoy the story. 3 stars.
Jax Marlin- To Catch a Marlin by T.K. Toppin is a combination of sci-fi, mystery, and adventure all wrapped up into one book. Toppin does a masterful job of creating an interesting and engaging plot line. Also her characters are fully developed and easy to imagine in your mind’s eye. I really like the character Jax Marlin. She is a strong female character, who technically is a criminal but she is a vigilante. I love the adventure that Toppin took me on with Jax Marlin and add in Special Inspector Michael Pedroni to really heat up the pursuit. Will Special Inspector Pedroni find Jax Marlin before she finds the new alliance in town or will he stop the pursuit? You will have to read this book to find out what happens.
Jax Marlin, set in the future, takes place on Bacchus, a huge, Las Vegas-like space station that provides gambling and gaming to wealthy visitors and criminals alike. The two main characters are the title character, an elusive vigilante with good reason for her personal fight against crime and Pedroni, the cop who hunts her. Pedroni soon realizes that shady things are happening on Bacchus, making his pursuit of Jax even tougher. This relatively short novel is packed with action and great characters — my favorite is the geeky, techy Agent Ling who assists Pedroni with the case. I had enjoyed other novels by TK Toppin and looked forward to reading Jax Marlin for a long time. This book met all my expectations.
Jax Mariln - To Catch a Mariln by TK Toppin is the ultimate blend of sci-fil, mystery, thrill, and romance. Jax Mariin is a vigilante that keeps Special Inspector Michael Pedroni on his toes. The story is based in the future on Earth as well as other worlds beyond. As you read of Jax’s past, the reader can understand why she takes criminal matters into her own hands. Jax is a character I quickly began to fall in love with a strong lead female character. Then the mystery of Jax and Pedroni’s relationship begins to develop. Why is Jax leaving criminals for Pedroni to discover? Why is Pedroni not able to restrain Jax when he had the chance? I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story by TK Toppin and look forward to reading others by her.
Following the horrific home invasion that killed her family, Jax Marlin becomes a vigilante, driven to take down violent criminals. With 'her copper' on her tail, Jax plans her next target: four of the worst career terrorists meeting on a space dome. Brace yourself for chaos.
Be warned, this book deals with mature themes and contains sexual assault. That said, Toppin's Jax Marlin is a vibrant character and the deepening relationship with officer Pedroni drives the narrative; two wounded, lonely people who need each other, but with no future.
The detective thriller hammers along at a decent pace and the worldbuilding is detailed, particularly the aptly named, debauched space dome city of Bacchus.
Jax Marlin – To Catch A Marlin by T.K. Toppin - Review by Meg Tyrrell
This book will have you mesmerized by the first paragraph. I instantly wanted to know what was going on and why a vigilante was being chased and what she was running from. I needed to know the whole story and was on the edge of my kindle trying to find out. I couldn’t put this book down. Thrilling because of all the adventure, mystery and sexiness T.K Toppin brings to you in this book, will definitely get your mouth watering for more! Loved it!!! With both characters being completely developed, you wont be able to help to fall in love with them.
This is a step out of my classic reads into new genre of books and from the very frist chapter and i am hooked the writing style grips you in after reading the first chapter you don't want to put this book down you want to know all about Jax and how Pedroni will ahered to this case. This is a pure page turner you don't want to stop until you know the rest of the story.
TK Toppin, what a tease you are! I was riveted by this story, assuming there would be a great big sexy scene between Jax and her copper, and while their brief face-to-face was sexy, I guess I'll have to read Book 2 as I root for the vigilante and Petroni to hook up.
Love the characters of Marlin and Petroni. Jax is such a badass!
Jax Marlin – To Catch A Marlin By T.K. Toppin 5 out of 5 stars
The story Jax Marlin - To Catch A Marlin is an amazing book to read. The story has action, danger, and a game of cat and mouse that is being played between the two main characters. I loved reading about Jax Marlin. She is called a vigilante; however, she sees herself as someone who finds and stops criminals her own way. She is intelligent, independent, strong, and beautiful. Special Agent Michael Pedroni is the one that has vowed to bring Jax in. As a Special Agent, he believes that her methods can be dangerous for those who are around when she strikes. However, Michael is questioning the difference in her justice and his. Will Michael be successful in apprehending Jax? What does the future hold for Jax and Michael? Read this book to find out. This is a story that does get emotional at times and I really felt for both Michael and Jax. I grew to care about both of them each chapter that I read. The story does have some steamy moments and moments that I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Some of the additional characters only care about themselves and their plans. Will they succeed? Don’t miss out on a story that is an adventure that doesn’t stop until the last page. I highly recommend reading it.
This is my first experience of the Jax Marlin books and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. My kind of book: sci-fi mixed in with loads of action and adventure.
From the start, there’s plenty going on as we get to know the vigilante – Jax – and ‘my copper’ as she like to call the policeman in pursuit of her, Special Inspector Pedroni. I love books with strong female leads and Jax is certainly that as she evades capture in pursuit of hardened criminals across space using guile and an abundance of physical skill. Some of the action scenes were complex, and breathtaking, very well described which shows no little writing prowess. Loved the relationship between the two main characters.
Full of imagination, wit and originality, this is a book that will make me go back for more from this author.
You know how "they" say not to judge a book by its cover? Well JAX MARLIN - TO CATCH A MARLIN would be a very difficult book to do that with. The graphic gives no hint as to what the story could be about and the blurb gives only a little hint as to what is found between the covers of this story.
What IS between the covers is a well developed story with great world building and a fully thought out story. It is a story of suspense and intrigue and futuristic developments. A vigilante, a detective and lots of moving parts keep a great this book interesting from beginning to end.
This is the first time I've read this author and I look forward to reading more.
From the start, the cat-and-mouse game between copper Pedroni and vigilante Jax had me hooked! I was in the boat from the get-go!
Pedroni is a burned-out police detective who would rather keep his feet on good old terra firma than go chasing a slippery vigilante to a space-based wonderland of debauchery. But because it's Jacinda Fish, a.k.a Jax Marlin, he goes.
In the tradition of Leslie Charteris classic series "The Saint," Jax is a cross of Catwoman, Xena, and Simon Templar, with ninja skills and catlike reflexes. Pedroni reminds me of both Columbo, with his sometimes deceptive and intentional bumbling, and Nick Charles with his delightful biting wit and self-effacing view of the world. In TK Toppin's deft hands, the mix is pure GOLD!!
As the story progresses we get a sense of both characters' internal conflict as they fight their attraction to each other. Pedroni, jaded enough to wonder if Jax way isn't better, and Jax idealistic enough to want to do the right thing, come together in a perfect blend of moral ambiguity that leaves the reader questioning where the line should be drawn.
I laughed out loud at some scenes and held my breath in heart-pounding excitement at others. Toppin creates a full and rich world with amazing wonders and believable details and paints a brilliant picture of them in crystal clear detail. She does it with a light hand and a master's touch. Her action scenes only lack the heart-thumping bass rhythms of a musical score.
Just when you think the story couldn't get any better, there are space pirates! Not just any space pirates, either. Captain Taris is a memorable rapscallion who deserves a book or two of his own!
I didn't want this book to end. My one consolation is that this is one of many stories starring Jax and Pedroni.
First off, I love this cover. Props to whomever designed it. The story's pretty good too. The first 10-15% felt like it just rehashed the book's description repeatedly, but after that the action seemed to pick up. Pedroni and Marlin's cat and mouse game was amusing, as was the way Marlin managed to stay one step ahead of Pedroni but was never too far away. Her affection for him softened her personality and made it a lot easier to relate to her. Without it she would have felt too cold to like, too mechanised. She was pretty much a good at everything, fighting, tech, disguise, etc. I was left wondering exactly how she became so awesome. The answer was hinted at, but I still would have liked to know how exactly that came about.
Pedroni, was wonderful. He's the epitome of 'good cop.' He reminded me a little bit of Asimov's Elijah Baley, but that might just be an effect of a New York detective in space. I enjoyed watching him struggle with his role as the Special Investigator in charge of catching Marlin and his growing feelings for her, as well as his increasing understanding of her motives. I really wanted them to have their happily ever after, but I'm happy with how the book ended. Anything more would have been unrealistic.
All in all, I have very few complaints. It was a sweet story, with some good fight scenes and truly evil baddies.
Jax Marlin, by her lights, is not a criminal. She’s a vigilante with a more than adequate reason behind her successful vendetta against truly horrible people. Most citizens would cheer her on, but there is one small matter—The Law. Special Inspector Michael Pedroni represents The Law. It is his job to catch those who break it and by his lights, Jax Marlin breaks it every day she stays on what she considers her job, bringing down the kind of people who hurt others.
It’s far in the future where the two opponents operate, and Pedroni is forced to chase the elusive vigilante from Earth out to a satellite called the “Bacchus Dome” that makes Kubla Kahn’s Pleasure Dome look like a kindergarten picnic. Pedroni’s frustration grows when he finds little signature gifts left for him by Jax Marlin at the scene of her every completed task. What is he supposed to do? He must catch her and stop what she’s doing, but how can he when his sympathies lie with her and his feelings toward her turn into far more than sympathy? Not only is she right, though her methods are wrong, when she begins to refer to him as “my copper,” poor Pedroni’s in a real bind. T.K. Toppin, author of the exciting and well-received Lancaster Trilogy, is a writer who delivers—every time, in every way.
Special Inspector Michael Pedroni is assigned to a kidnapping case – with a twist. A vigilante is now in the sights of the ICSP for rescuing the child from the kidnappers. And Pedroni is on her tail – or so he believes until she starts feeding him leads information as to where she will be next.
Jax Marlin, a victim of a crime when a child, is out to attain justice for victims when the ICSP are unable to intervene due to laws and regulations they must follow. And this time, it seems, she’s pulling out all the stops…
TK Toppin weaves a fantastic tale of intrigue, action and suspense in this novel. Her characters are well-formed, as is the supporting cast, and the romance between the two main characters is believable. Her writing, while it can be refined somewhat, is nevertheless vivid and compelling, drawing one on through the book as one follows the action. Her fight sequences are a point of excellence, throwing punch and counter-kick with ease. No impossible moves there – unless one’s a floor-hugger like me who just can’t pull ‘em like the rest of them…
If you like your suspense and action, this one’s for you. Oh, and you need to appreciate a good dollop of science fiction.
What an incredible story! Somehow it managed to have all my favorite things...Pirates?! For Real. Jax Marlin is intelligent, tough and sexy. Michael Pedroni is a cop with a weary edge to him but honest and focused. It's his job to bring her in. This story was a great adventure, suspense, action, deep introspection. Everything that makes a story good and unforgettable. The main characters are thoughtfully crafted, and have you hooked in at the get go. The main supporting characters are just as carefully crafted. So well described you have no difficulty picturing them. There is plenty of action packed scenes in this book and they are all artfully and thoroughly thought out. This doesn't feel like an off the cuff story, this feels like and reads like an art form. I love strong female characters and Jax does not disappoint. Not gonna lie, I think I am a big fan of Jax Marlin and I will be looking for more adventures with her. If you're looking for a good solid read with a wild ride, this is the book for you. You will not regret it.
An enjoyable love story set out in the depths of space. Characters were well done in my opinion. My only issue was that there didn't seem to be a progression in the romantic feelings between the two main characters (Pedroni and Jax), but all of the buildup to them falling for each other seemed to happen in between two timeframes that were skipped over in the book. There was plenty of action to keep the attention of most readers, even those who don't normally go for a romance. And of course, who doesn't love seeing the bad guys get theirs?
As I've come to expect from the author, the world-building is in-depth and definitely puts you right there in the middle of each scene.
I'm not sure of the author intended for this to be the start of a series, but I could wholeheartedly see follow-on novels featuring these two characters. I'd definitely look forward to buying another one in a series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This is the fourth book by Ms. Toppin that I've had the pleasure of reading. Once again, she delivers a top-notch sci-fi romp of an adventure, chock-full of romance and intrigue. World-building, action, character: these are the areas where Ms. Toppin's talents really shine. The story is definitely interesting, as we follow along with Special Inspector Pedroni, hot on the trail of Earth's most notorious vigilante, Jax Marlin. Of course, as he closes in on his target, he finds himself becoming more and more intrigued with this very sexy vigilante, which serves only to complicate his life (personally and professionally).
I think it's safe to say that Jax Marlin is definitely my favourite of Ms. Toppin's spunky heroines (step aside, Josie Bettancourt!), and I'm sure she'll fast become a fan-favourite, too.
Jax Marlin to catch a Marlin By T.K. Toppin is a futuristic crime novel about a female Vigilante Jax Marlin and Inspector Pedroni who is determined to catch her. Pedroni chases Jax into space literally to try and find her. There’s a little romance, plenty of action and a great story line. Jax is the perfect Vigilante she has a tragic past but is still confident and capable her only weakness seems to be the growing feelings she has for “her copper” Inspector Pedroni. Inspector Michael Pedroni is a stickler for following protocol and catching the bad guy and he can’t help but feel and attraction to the Sexy Vigilante who is always one step ahead. If you love crime novels with a futuristic sc-fi theme you will really enjoy this book.
Jax Marlin – To Catch A Marlin by T.K. Toppin was a wonderful read. I loved the mystery and suspense in this novel. I also loved how it was set in a time in the future. The authors futuristic ideas and creativity were amazing to read as the story unfolded. It was a lot of fun! There was also enough detail to easily visualize characters and settings. The storyline was easy to follow and organized. I loved this book and I highly recommend it. This is my first time reading something from this author and I know for sure I will be reading more from her.
I enjoyed this book, I look forward to reading more from this series. This is a well developed story with lots of action, suspense and even some romance. The characters are strong, well rounded and make the story realistic. Jax is a vigilante who has Special Inspector Pedroni right on her trail. The closer he gets the more intrigued he gets with her. Than you four big time criminals forming an alliance that Jax is out to stop. I highly recommend reading this book to see how it all will end.
This first book (in a seven book series) follows the trail of the sexy and elusive vigilante, Jax Marlin as she toys with Inspector Pedroni while bringing hardened criminals to justice. This book is exciting and fast-paced, and so well written. There's some sexual tension building between Marlin and Pedroni, making this suspenseful sci-fi mystery an all-around excellent read.
Jax Marlin by T.K. Toppin was an unexpectedly brilliant book and not at all what I thought I was going to be like. This book was so entertaining in all ways and I enjoyed every second of reading it. Not only was it exciting and intriguing I also found it to be quite amusing as well. I loved the main characters. They had such life about them. The overall story was interesting and well developed. This was a new author to me and I can definitely say I am excited to read more.
