Tall Tales was an innovative newspaper strip syndicated internationally by the New York Herald Tribune from 1957–1963. Whereas newspaper strips are square, single-panel or multiple-panel horizontal gag cartoons, Al Jaffee, known for the Fold-In in MAD Magazine, once again altered the format of his work to create a vertical strip—the first, and last, in newspaper history. Tall Tales contains the best 120 wordless strips out of over 2,200, scanned from the original files. The book features a new preface by Jaffee and an introduction by Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report.

About the author

Allan Jaffee was an American cartoonist. He was notable for his work in the satirical magazine Mad, including his trademark feature, the Mad Fold-in. Jaffee was a regular contributor to the magazine for 65 years and is its longest-running contributor. In a 2010 interview, Jaffee said, "Serious people my age are dead."
With a career running from 1942 until 2020, Jaffee holds the Guinness World Record for having the longest career as a comic artist. In the half-century between April 1964 and April 2013, only one issue of Mad was published without containing new material by Jaffee.
In 2008, Jaffee was honored by the Reuben Awards as the Cartoonist of the Year. Cartoonist Arnold Roth of The New Yorker said, "Al Jaffee is one of the great cartoonists of our time." Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz wrote, "Al can cartoon anything."

Al Jaffee (AJ) is one of the unsung masters of cartooning! This book gives you just a glimpse of the quality work he put out for years. Most people will remember from MAD magazine's 'snappy answers to stupid questions' - something my friends and I tried very hard to imitate. Tried it on mom a couple times - not a good idea!

কার্টুনের প্রতি সবসময়েই আগ্রহ ছিল, কিন্তু এই দেখলাম ওস্তাদের আঁক কাকে বলে। আক্ষরিক অর্থেই 'টল টেইলস'। এতটুকু চিকন-লম্বা চিরের মধ্যে কী কী সব কাণ্ড! একটাও সংলাপ নাই। অথচ সংলাপের প্রয়োজনও নাই। বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত, সূক্ষ্ম। জ্যফি একটা লম্বা চিরের মধ্যেই কী অপূর্ব কায়দায় চোখ দুইটিকে ঘুরিয়ে আনেন। তাতে কোনো রকম জোর-জবরদস্তী নাই। অনেকটা সিনেমার মতো মসৃণ। দারুণ।

৯০ এর দশকে বাংলাদেশের উন্মাদ ম্যাগাজিনের শেষের পাতায় আমরা পেতাম অভিনব একটা কার্টুন। এই কার্টুনগুলো পাতা সোজা অবস্থায় একট কার্টুন থাকতো, দুই পাশের দাগ মিলিয়ে ভাজ করে দিলেই সে কার্টুনের আসল খোঁচাটা বের হতো। এই ভাঁজ করা কার্টুনগুলো বা ফল্ড-ইন কার্টুনের ধারণাটা আদতে আমেরিকার বিশ্ববিখ্যাত স্যাটায়ার পত্রিকা - ম্যাড ম্যাগাজিনের ফোল্ড ইন কার্টুন থেকে নেওয়া হয়েছে। অদ্ভুত, ব্যতিক্রমী এবং অভিনব এ ফল্ড ইন কার্টুনগুলো ম্যাড ম্যাগাজিনে জড়ো হওয়া অসংখ্য প্রতিভাবান শিল্পীর মধ্যে অন্যতম একজন - অ্যাল জ্যাফির আবিষ্কার।

কার্টুন শিল্পী অ্যাল জ্যাফি সেই ৫০ এর দশক থেকে ম্যাড ম্যাগাজিনে বের হওয়া প্রতিটা সংখ্যায় ফোল্ড ইন কার্টুন এঁকেছেন। জ্যাফির জন্ম ১৯২১ সালে, এই ২০১৮ সালেও তিনি ম্যাড ম্যাগাজিনের জন্য কার্টুন আঁকছেন! ফোল্ড ইন কার্টুনের বাইরে জ্যাফি আঁকতেন টল টেলস, যা আরেক ব্যতিক্রমি উদ্ভাবন। প্রথাগত প্রায় সব কার্টুন আঁকা হয় ল্যান্ডস্কেপ হিসাবে, পাঠক বামদিক থেকে ডানদিকে চোখ বুলিয়ে কার্টুনটা দেখেন এবং পড়েন। জ্যাফির টল টেলসের কার্টুনগুলো হতো টল বা লম্বা, আকারে অনেকটা সংবাদপত্রের কলামের মতো। জ্যাফির এই কার্টুন পাঠক সাধারণতঃ কোন নির্দিষ্ট দিক থেকে পড়া শুরু করতেন না, জ্যাফি যেইদিকে মূল আকর্ষণ এঁকে রেখেছেন সেখান থেকে শুরু করতেন।

আর জ্যফি সাধারণতঃ উপরে বা নীচের অংশে কার্টুনের ক্লাইম্যাক্সটা রেখে দিতেন, তই পাঠকের চোখ কার্টুনের উপর ঘুরতে ঘুরতে হঠাৎ অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে ক্লাইম্যাক্সটার উপর পড়লে কার্টুনের খোঁচাটা স্পষ্ট হতো। জ্যাফির এ সিরিজের প্রায় সব কার্টুনই সংলাপ ছাড়া, স্পষ্ট আঁকা, ছেলে বুড়ো সবার কাছে সহজবোধ্য, অথচ কার্টুনের মজাটা অবিশ্বাস্য রকম উইটি আর বুদ্ধিদীপ্ত।

টল টেলস বইটা জ্যাফির ২২০০ এর উপর আঁকা টল টেলস কার্টুন থেকে বাছাই করা ১২০টা কার্টুনের সংকলন। ক্ষুদ্র এ বই থেকে অ্যাল জ্যাফির কেন জীবন্ত কিংবদন্তি, তা সামান্য হলেও বুঝা যায়।

If you know Al Jaffee’s name at all, it’s probably because you read Mad Magazine on a fairly regular basis at some point in your life. Like me. One of the many things Jaffee did outside of Mad was a newspaper strip with a unique gimmick – a vertical format rather than the usual horizontal or four-square panel format. The strip, “Tall Tales”, were one-shot visual jokes that took advantage of the format. It ran from 1957 to 1963, and this book collects what Jaffee thinks are the best of the lot.

Most are pretty good, some are laugh-out-loud funny, but I mostly got a kick of the gimmick itself and how Jaffee made maximum use of it to create a gag. Some of the humor is dated, but if you’re a fan of Jaffee or a comic-strip aficionado, I’d highly recommend this.

My mother actually introduced me to his art, with cards he did she had. then it was the Mad magazines my elder bother by 11 years had in room I would borrow to read when I read all I had in mine library. I found this book for $5 at the comic con and leaped for joy!! Colbert even did the intro for the book--which is full of great graphics of the era. It is long and narrow--just like the cards my mother had too. I just enjoy the feel of the book in my hands, and the memories it brings back of the 60's-70's for me.

Like Gustave Verbeek, a comics creator who uses the restrictions of the form as part of the humor and creativity. I wish there was a compendium of these, rather than just the best of! (Although perhaps it's better to see what the artist is most happy with and feels aged the best, given some of the Verbeek and Peter Newell content.)

Charming collection of early Al Jaffee cartoons, before the Mad Magazine work that I grew up on. These syndicated vertical (and mostly wordless) strips were well before my time, so I’m happy to have discovered this collection of his personal favorites.

The way he drew them vertically is interesting for a bit but after 20-30 pages you just want to finish.

Charming and clever early work from the warped mind of Mad Magazine's very own Al Jaffee. The unique design of his strip (vertical one-panel gags instead of the traditional horizontal approach) makes for clever and fun reading. Note that sparse use of words or dialogue - another Jaffee innovation that allowed his strip to be sold all over the world since the humor came from the image, and not word play. Bonus: Stephen Colbert writes the introduction and rubs all of our faces in the fact that he now knows Al, and even gets to dine with him.

Vertical comic strips from the 60s by Al Jaffee. It could have been a gimmicky concept, but they're actually pretty creative. The shape of the strip informs how we "read" it - the eye takes in the information in a different way. With a horizontal strip you read left to right, but I found that my eye would start somewhere and wander around, taking in all the information in a different sequence each time. I can't say the gags had me rolling around on the floor laughing, but most of them were a clever use of humor within the space.
