There was a town isolated from the outside world, surrounded by a 4,000 meter tall cliff.
The town was full of chimneys.
Smoke rose from everywhere, clouding the sky above.
Smoke, smoke, from morning till night.
The people living in the chimney town were encaged in black smoke,
and did not know about the blue sky.
They did not know about the shining stars.

I would love to give this work a 4 star rating for just the gorgeous art alone, but... it’s entirely Munashichi’s art that brings it alive, but the celebrity producer (the entertainer Nishino) has been extremely reluctant to give credit to the original artist, using this book as a personal vanity project for promoting himself. I loved this book. As someone learning Japanese, having both English and Japanese on the same page with closely-linked translations was a wonderful way to enjoy the story in my native English and develop my Japanese reading.
The illustrations are gorgeous and the story beautiful with great use of language and plot. I would recommend this to anyone!
