Ralph Miliband was a leading contributor to the development of Marxist political theory in the late twentieth century. His writings remain highly influential in contemporary work on the state and related areas of political theory and political sociology.

This collection of new essays re-examines and evaluates the central themes in Miliband's work. It provides an essential reference point for research within the Marxist tradition, and a valuable resource for students on a range of courses in political and social theory.

This is a very good introduction to Miliband's work and continued relevance for contemporary times. Although the essays are of varying quality, a few that stand out make this an important read. Peter Burnham makes a compelling case for Parliamentary Socialism being Miliband's most important work. John Manley's piece on the US welfare state using a Milibandian lens is a refreshing contrast to the "American exceptionalism" literature. And Bob Jessop does a good job discussing the Miliband-Poulantzas "debate" which was often more heat than light.
