Schutzhund Obedience : Training in Drive

Rate this book
Have fun while training! This method gives your dog choices, then you simply reward him for making the correct choice. This gives him credit for being an intelligent, sensitive creature who enjoys working when we allow him to think for himself. This happy attitude assures your dog will work joyfully and correctly--in other words, he will love to work!! Stresses the drive instinct in the dog, and is a step-by-step manual to teach you how to train your dog for winning obedience. Popular with both Schutzhund and competitive obedience customers. Deals with the novice heeling, sit, stay, down, stand, recall.

Great book even though its older. I'd love to see a revised version that incorporated the tug/reward toys most use today, as well as clicker training because its so much easier to mark proper behavior with the clicker and shaping is of great value to teaching dogs obedience work.

I thought the part on not teaching a dog until its 12-24 months was a bit silly. The overall mindset has changed a lot since this book was first published and with shaping its possible to teach a puppy/young dog a LOT even if you aren't being formal yet.

Overall it was very useful to read though! I like how everything is all laid out as far as what order to teach the exercises in and how to go about it.

Schutzhund has a reputation as being taught rather harshly. However there is quite a bit of positive reinforcement used in this book. Food, yes food, is used as a reinforcer together with play.
Considering it was written back in 1992, it is surprising how positive and fun it could be if you followed this book.
There are one of two methods in the 'polishing' section that I would avoid but, in balance, there are many more methods worth remembering!
Also contains some nice simple explanations on the science of dog training.
I must thank my old tutor for handing me this book.

Sheila Booth is my favorite dog training author. She has won top honors with her dogs in Schutzhund, a very demanding German "protection dog" sport. She clearly loves dogs and emphasizes motivating dogs by encouragement and fun. This book is not strictly "positive", but is still very humane and respectful of the dogs.Later she made the change to a completely positive approach she explains in "Purely Positive Training." These methods though intended for schutzhund trials, are easily adaptable for ordinary dog training.

No matter what discipline of dog training you are into this is great stuff. Gottfried revolutionized dog training and made it so much more fun for the dog and the handler.
