Deb Ralston faces her most personally harrowing case when she is assigned to the Fort Worth Sex Crimes Unit and finds herself recalling her own childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her father.
Anne Wingate, born in 1943 as Martha Anne Guice, is a mystery writer currently living in Salt Lake City, Utah. Most of her mysteries are set somewhere within Texas. She is an adult convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and this sometimes shows in her works. She grew up in the Disciples of Christ Church.
Wow, that was intense. I think she managed to include almost every type of person you might encounter in dealing with the subjects of child abuse & incest. At least, given the publication date. (No internet porn in 1993.) I was tho, expecting in the case of the 6-y.o., for them to discover her father had made films of her. .....................
Wow. I just went to read others' reviews, & there's only one other! I know there are only 35 ratings (I think this author has not gotten the attention she deserves), but still I can't help wondering if others didn't write reviews because they, like me, felt a little overwhelmed by the end.
This is number 9 of the 12 Deb Ralston mysteries out there. I love Deb -- the way she fits in household errands in between detecting, the way she tosses off snappy asides while recounting a story, the way she picks up and cares for all the strays that cross her path. This was a hard read, though, featuring multiple cases of horrific rape and sexual abuse. I'm glad to have rounded out my Deb collection, but I don't think I'll reread this one soon.
Excellent book. Heavy subject matter. Not recommended for under 17.
Detective Deb Ralston is a competent police officer, and also a mom, wife, sister, and daughter. We see her in all here, while she takes on cases, deals with her past trauma, and recovers from for surgery. The theme is child sexual abuse, in lots of different forms. Heavy and heartbreaking.
