The roaring lioness of England!

Born in 1102 to King Henry of England and Queen Matilda of Scotland, Matilda's uniquely royal Norman, Saxon, and Scottish heritage was meant to unify an England still divided by her grandfather's conquest in 1066. When the 1120 White Ship Disaster made her the only surviving child of her parents, Matilda suddenly became heiress to the English

Two of my favorite women in early British history are Empress Matilda, Henry I only surviving legitimate child and heir the the throne of England and Eleanor of Aquatine, Queen to two Kings as well as mother to two kings. This book is mainly about Matilda and I enjoyed reading it. She had a fascinating life because even though she was the daughter of Henry I, she was treated as property, a brood made that Henry married to Emperor Heinrich of the Holy Roman Empire. Reading about their marriage an ...more

Another installment of the Legendary Women in World History series. A very well written, albeit short, narrative of Princess Matilda of Scotland claiming the English throne. The timeline and additional readings were fantastic resources, found at the end of the story. I thought it was a well written introduction to yet another character I knew nothing about.

Compared to the other stories I have read, I think the writing in this one was the strongest. Much more dialogue that propelled the story, de

The seventh book in the Women of Word History Series brings us England's first heiress to the throne, Empress Matilda. I have known about Empress Matilda's (Maud's) reign, but not so much her earlier life; how she became the first heiress. From betrothed at six to married near 12 years of age, this was the norm within the royalty world to keep blood lines pure, and ties to other seats of power within grasp. She lived quite a life from having lost her siblings to becoming the heiress to England's ...more

The years of bloody war fought for the throne of England after the death of Henry l are not covered particularly well (IMO) in British history. There may be a passing knowledge of Maud and Stephen but how many people know who they were and why the spent eighteen years slaughtering each other's followers and many more besides.

Laurel A. Rockefeller uses her inimitable style to pass on this knowledge in a way Young Adults can understand - and not so Y/A can also enjoy.

I can honestly say I knew quit
