About the author

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was a prolific British crime writer, journalist and playwright, who wrote 175 novels, 24 plays, and countless articles in newspapers and journals.

Over 160 films have been made of his novels, more than any other author. In the 1920s, one of Wallace's publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him.

He is most famous today as the co-creator of "King Kong", writing the early screenplay and story for the movie, as well as a short story "King Kong" (1933) credited to him and Draycott Dell. He was known for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, The Four Just Men, the Ringer, and for creating the Green Archer character during his lifetime.

Tony Perely nu era „yellow”, nici în faţa propriei judecăţi nici după aprecierile altora, mult mai exigenţi.
Nu e loial să „ciripeşti” la poliţie (şi nici sănătos, când poliţiştii sunt cumpăraţi), dar se poate discuta cu cei deopotrivă cu tine; ba chiar o poţi face în gura mare, dacă ai mai fost cumva şi nedreptăţit.
Nu e loial să „dai” poliţiei pe unul dintr-ai tăi, în afara cazului când individul e „yellow”; ba chiar nici atunci.
Singura soluţie onorabilă, în acest caz, e să-l iei undeva mai de-o parte, să-i spui o poveste despre bine şi rău şi… să-i cam faci felul…
… Fermierii îngroziţi, descoperind în zori cenuşii de zi, la vreo margine de câmp, cadavre despuiate şi împănate cu gloanţe, puteau să se scandalizeze până la isterie. Nu conta, treaba lor!
Faptele erau fapte; acesta era genul de justiţie la care se recurgea în tot Vestul şi chiar într-o parte din centrul ţării. Obişnuinţa e a doua natură, mai ales când convine…
Să luăm exemplul lui Gallway Roşcovanul.
Individul practicase toate meseriile condamnabile şi comisese tot ceea ce se poate comite în materie de încălcare a legilor şi delicvenţă. Fusese, pe rând, sau în acelaşi timp, spărgător, hoţ de buzunare, patron de localuri deocheate şi multe, multe altele. În urma acestui amestec de îndeletniciri de excepţie, parvenise la cea de „bootlegger”. Contrabanda cu alcool îi adusese mai multă bogăţie decât visase vreodată şi, ca urmare, o existenţă confortabilă, un soi de imunitate contra arestărilor, precum şi amiciţia unor tipi… mai degrabă energici… Dar succesul urcă repede la cap, iar Gallway nu-i poate rezista; devine flecar, certăreţ şi ranchiunos şi, infinit mai grav, ia obiceiul de a priza „pudră albă”.

Chicago gangsters move their operations to London. Fast moving but rather silly, entertaining but not quite gripping, not a bad yarn but not a great one either. Wallace's books have about as much to do with the real London underworld as P. G. Wodehouse's have to do with the real aristocracy of England, that doesn't make them any the less entertaining you just have to suspend your disbelief. Wallace wrote this one towards the end of his life, he may even have been in Hollywood when he wrote it which could explain the very old school Hollywood gangsters!

This book is a little far fetched and stilted. It includes Wallace's usual love interest within the mystery which is based on two rival gangs from Chicago coming to London and competing to blackmail rich men into paying up to prevent being killed. Scotland Yard is helped by Jiggs, a captain from the Chicago detective bureau. The gangs
