The Savage Stronghold is the second book in the Last Ranger series. I read the first one years ago, but still recalled enough of it to know what happened before this book. Really, you don't need to read the first one to catch up easily enough. That's the blessing of pulp fiction.
Anyway, Martin Stone is scouring the post-apocalyptic wastelands of America in search of his kidnapped sister. With an immense arsenal, a loyal and lethal dog, and superior fighting skills; Stone tears through bikers and religious cult members while trying to accomplish his mission.
There is really not a lot to say on this. It's typical post-apocalyptic pulp fiction faire. The hero is amazing at everything he does. You read one, you know the character. They kill a bunch of people and women want to bed them. Simple enough. As teenagers; we all wanted to be that guy. Well, most of us did. Now, it's just a simple type of book to read that requires no additional thought by the reader.

I missed the first book in this series, but it's not too hard to figure out what is going on. There are enough flashbacks to keep it straight.
The Last Ranger goes to Colorado to rescue his sister from a vicious biker gang whose leader is planning on marrying her. He also comes across a crazy religious cult who want everyone to be the same. If not, they torture and kill. A really good post-nuke book series.

As much as it pains me to write this review, I have to give this book 3 1/2 stars. I wanted to give this book for stars however, I just could not justify that rating. This book took me forever to finish. Coming in at 217 pages, it took me over a month to wrap this one up. I think the biggest disappointment for me was the first book dove into a spiritual element that help stone in his quest to survive and kill. However, in this book that whole premise is nowhere to be found, except for a small mansion in one sentence, and then never again.
This book takes forever to get going. The first four chapters we find stone aimlessly driving around doing Evel Knievel stunts on his motorcycle before anything really starts to happen. I understand that a small part of this was necessary to move into the next section of the book. However, it was totally unnecessary to have close to four chapters dedicated to it.
For some reason, the author felt the need to describe EVERYTHING. As the book starts out, almost every other sentence is an unnecessary description of what is happening in the book, for example, the water was black, so black it was looking into space. Now imagine these poorly written unnecessary descriptions for every other sentence. It was at times exhausting. Thankfully, as the book went on, these became fewer and fewer.
Once you finally get into the action, the book picks up a little bit. This book felt more like a transition book into the bigger story we had returning characters. The mission was the same. However, it just felt like this book was just to move the story forward when I read these books I’m not looking for literature masterpieces I understand the goal the themes and the fun, however I never enjoy romantic love scenes in these kind of books just to be there to have them there, which you will find in this book just randomly dropped in.
This book has no twist interns no surprises, and you will see and be able to tell what’s going to happen from the very first page to the very end. Unfortunately, I had very high hopes for this series, and I could not wait to dive into this one however, after a book to this book will be on the shelves for sometime until I finish reading everything else on my plate and unfortunate book 2 in the series I will eventually read book 3, but needless to say, this one was disappointing.
