Betting On Kincade

Rate this book
Everyone Cassie Wilcox loved is gone. And now, thanks to her drunken stepfather, her house and family business will be taken from her, too, unless she can find a way to buy back the ranch from the new owner. With less than two months to come up with money she doesn’t have, her options are running out, and apparently, her common sense as she rents out rooms to an eclectic group of strangers.
Returning home for Dalton Kincade is bittersweet. Not a damn thing has changed. Two years on the rodeo circuit weren’t able to shake free the memory of the feisty redhead who’d broken his heart into a thousand pieces. Nor the sting of her parting words…Never trust a Kincade.
Winning her beloved ranch in a drunken bet is the last thing he expected to happen, but at least he saved it for her. Now, he has to figure out how to break that news to a woman who never wants to see him again. Renting a room in the house he now owns might be a risk, but it’s nothing compared to betting his heart on winning back the love of his life.

3 "Cowboy For The Save" stars!

BETTING ON KINCADE reads like a traditional western romance. There's a rodeo star, his love interest owns a ranch, there was pre-existing drama, a feud, there was added drama, and the chemistry between the main characters was strong enough to hint at a happy ending.

As mush as I enjoyed this read, there were some details that bugged me:
✯ Cassie's pride and her attitude and her irrational though patterns made her a difficult character to like.
✯ Again Cassie came off as very abrasive and downright rude. Especially towards Dalton. He saved her ranch and what did he get for his trouble? A pisspoor attitude from the woman he loved.
✯ Unnecessary drama was mixed in with Dalton withholding the fact that he saved the ranch. Their history and present push-and-pull was enough to carry the story well.

So while Cassie annoyed and frustrated me, Dalton kept me reading more. This author created a truly worthwhile hero!

I think the Western romance subcategory is one that deserves a little more attention. It’s hard for the cowboys to compete with all the rock stars, step brothers and vampires in romance today, but I think they’re deserving of a little more love. The first romance novel I fell in love with, after all, was a Western.

Betting on Kincade is a classic Western romance. You’ve got a hot rodeo dude, a female rancher who is also a stubborn spitfire, and some combustible chemistry that can’t be denied. It’s also well written and well edited. All of this makes it worth a read.

But…

My reading experience wasn’t all puppies and kittens, though. I had a few quibbles:

1. When an author signs with a publisher, I know that he/she loses some (if not all) control over their cover art. So, I’m not blaming the author for this, but...the dude on the cover. He looks kind of plastic. And I’m pretty sure that hand with the cards is the result of some lackluster Photoshop work. (I’d have to ask our Design Dude to make sure, though. Maybe I’m wrong.)

2. I don’t understand why Dalton didn’t tell Cassie that he was the ranch’s new owner right away. Keeping it from her served no purpose and seemed kind of unnecessarily dishonest.

3. I don’t feel like Cassie and Dalton ever had a good, honest, open heart-to-heart to discuss all the reasons why he left and why she let him go. It felt like after a few years of bitterness and longing, some communication was in order BEFORE the kissing and sex commenced.

4. Hey, Cassie: Dalton sure has helped you out a lot. How about a little gratitude? Some heartfelt thanks? Nope. Mostly, she just stomps around to prove how much of a stubborn spitfire she is (as is law in Western romances).

Minor quibbles notwithstanding, this one is still worth a read, if for no other reason than well written, well edited Western romances are too few and far between these days.

Full disclosure: the author generously provided a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Her drunken father looses the ranch in a bet. She has hardened her feelings because her ex left her for the rodeo circuit. He is the one who steps in and wins the ranch. A lot of things start happening from there. It is exciting, suspenseful, dramatic, fun and so much more. I was given a review copy by booksprout and voluntarily review it.

Cassie and Dalton are so frustrating! But in a weird and sexy way!

I really enjoyed this read for the most part, this book was my first by McKay and I'm not really a huge fan of her writing style. That aside, the story was interesting and held my attention, and the sexy parts were pretty hot! I had some qualms with the characters, development and communication - I don't really feel like I understand what happened at all. There was a weird tension between the main characters that I feel wasn't really explained enough in depth. The book was entertaining for sure, though. I would like to keep up with McKay in the future with new releases.

I loved the blurb on this book and I do love a good western and I love finding new to me authors, so I was very happy to read and review this book when asked to and it is well written and edited and there is a very real spark between the hero, cowboy and rodeo star Dalton Kincade and cowgirl and horse ranch owner Cassie Wilcox it also is a troupe I love second chance romance, but like all romances true love never runs smoothly.

Cassie has lost everyone she loves, her Mum her Grandfather and the boy she loved took off for the rodeo two years ago she is now struggling to keep her ranch going with her drunken step father they board horses and Cassie loves what she does. But then the bottom falls out of her life when the ranch is lost in a card game by her step father and Cassie decides that she will do whatever she needs to, to get it back even taking in human borders and when one of those potential borders turns out to be none other than her first love Dalton well life is about to change.

Dalton has arrived home to the town he left two years ago to prove to himself and everyone that he could run a ranch but there have been changes on the ranch he worked on and loved and now the feisty red head he has never stopped loving is struggling to keep the ranch that is now his, and he is nothing if not determined to win her love again and give her, her ranch but of course she still thinks he is bossy and still likes to make bets with here that will win or lose her the ranch.

I felt that there were chunks missing in this story things that needed to be said between Dalton and Cassie I could feel that spark and the connection between them at times but I think there needed to be more. I must say that I did very much like Dalton he is loving and caring and he is just the person Cassie needs. I just didn’t feel close to Cassie But I know that there are a lot of readers out there that will very much enjoy this story.

Nice contemporary western love story

Dalton left Cassie to seek fame on the rodeo circuit leaving her hardened and determined to make her family ranch successful and overcome financial difficulties. When her drunken stepfather losses cause him to put up the ranch deed as collateral, Dalton steps in to win the deed back for Cassie, who only knows that the ranch was lost in a bet and seeks to try and buy it back from the new owner. Dalton the shows up at the ranch on the pretense of looking for a job as a ranch hand. Their original attraction is rekindled while Cassie is searching for a way to buy back the ranch. Can Cassie manage to forgive Dalton for leaving her for the rodeo circuit and can Dalton win her love and trust before she discovers that he is the new owner? Some moderate language, minimal sex.
