That Finlay-Young was able to stay in the head of her young protagonist throughout this remarkable novel is an amazing achievement. The best fiction doesn't take sides, doesn't tell us what to think about characters who behave abominably. Finlay-Young allows the events to speak for themselves and, through that, we are able to get a picture of a childhood (two actually) that is ruined by one parent who just doesn't care enough to step up and look after his daughters.

An evocative novel full of raw emotion and compelling for its perspective from a child's point of view. At times I felt transported to the specific place, time and family situation depicted although they are different from my own experience. Definitely worth a read.

This book takes you inside the mind and heart of a child. It is beautifully imagined and written, with an eye towards healing the wounds only a mother can inflict.
